Shiba Inu price at $0.00000488: lower than any day in September

Shiba Inu trades at $0.00000488 on Tuesday evening, below every daily level of September. What October has cost, which levels count now and what to check before a sale.

On the record: Shiba Inu costs $0.00000488 on Tuesday evening. That puts the price below the lowest daily level the coin reached in the whole of September, and it does so for the fourth time in five days. Our own reading follows further down: the thinness of the market explains the slide better than any news out of the project itself.

The figures come from CoinGecko and apply to Tuesday evening, October 27. In euro terms the level corresponds to 0.00000438 euros. Against the previous day that is a gain of 0.5 percent, over seven days a loss of 4.7 percent, over 30 days one of 17.4 percent. The market capitalisation of Shiba Inu stands at $2.88 billion, rank 38 among all crypto-assets.

Four days below the September low of $0.00000494

September was a quiet month for Shiba Inu. The lowest daily close came on September 16 at $0.00000494, the highest on September 23 at $0.00000610. The price moved between those two values for 30 days. That band has been broken to the downside since last week.

On October 23 the daily close slipped below the September low for the first time, and again on October 25, 26 and 27. Four days out of five, then, beneath a zone that had formed the floor for a month beforehand. Monday's October low of $0.00000485 is at the same time the weakest level since August 12.

What counts for the reading is not the size of the decline but its persistence. A single day below a level is an outlier. Four days are a new level, as long as no counter-move follows.

The $0.0000050 level has not held since October 22

The round $0.0000050 level was the reference point traders oriented themselves by over recent weeks. In our article of October 26 on the Fed decision it still stood as a line to watch. Something concrete has changed about it since: the last daily close above $0.0000050 dates from October 22. Shiba Inu has closed below it on five consecutive trading days.

That reverses the role of the level. What previously served as a floor now lies above the price and acts as a ceiling. Every recovery has to win that zone back before the technical picture changes. From the current level, 2.5 percent are missing for that.

To the downside the next documented level is the October low at $0.00000485, only 0.7 percent below today's price. Beneath that comes a gap down to the year's low of July 12 at $0.00000412. The price has spent barely any time between those two values over the past six months, so the area offers correspondingly little orientation.

October balance: 17.5 percent below the month's high of October 5

The month began differently from how it is ending. On October 5 Shiba Inu stood at $0.00000592, the high for the month. From there to today, 17.5 percent have been lost. Measured against the 50-day average of $0.00000538 the price is 9.3 percent lower, measured against the 200-day average of $0.00000521 it is 6.4 percent lower.

The distance to both moving averages says something about the nature of the decline. Were the price only below the short average, this would be a correction within an intact trend. That the 200-day line also runs above it shows that October has turned the half-year picture as well.

Dogecoin loses a similar amount, Pepe is up

A look at the neighbours helps with the question of whether this is about Shiba Inu or about the whole category. Dogecoin, the largest meme coin, lost 19.1 percent over 30 days, somewhat more than Shiba Inu. Pepe, by contrast, is up 2.7 percent over the same period.

The category is therefore not moving in lockstep. Two of the three large meme coins lost heavily in October, one did not. Explaining the decline by overall market sentiment alone misses that difference.

The comparison of trading is more revealing. Pepe manages $272 million of daily turnover on a market capitalisation of $1.88 billion. Shiba Inu manages $52 million on a market value of $2.88 billion. Measured against its own market value, Pepe is therefore traded about eight times as intensively.

$52 million in daily turnover: what thin markets mean for an order

The turnover ratio is a figure you can easily recalculate yourself: daily turnover divided by market capitalisation. For Shiba Inu that gives 1.8 percent, for Dogecoin 3.0 percent, for Pepe 14.5 percent. The lower the value, the less capital changes hands in a day, and the more a single large order moves the price.

That has a very practical consequence. In a thin market, the gap between the price you see on screen and the price your order actually fills at comes out wider. A market order takes the next best price in the order book, and where little is sitting there, the next best price is quickly a considerably worse one. A limit order, by contrast, sets a ceiling when buying and a floor when selling.

How large the difference is at your provider depends on the order book of the exchange in question. Which venues licensed in Germany list Shiba Inu and what fees they charge is set out in our comparison of crypto exchanges. Check above all the spread between buying and selling price there, not just the order fee: with a coin at this turnover ratio, the spread is often the larger item.

Five years after the record: 94.3 percent below the all-time high

October 27 has a story of its own for Shiba Inu. On October 27, 2021 at 19:54 Central European Time, the coin reached $0.00008616, its highest level to this day. Exactly five years later the price is 94.3 percent below that.

That number says little about the current situation, but plenty about where the asset class stands. A decline of 94.3 percent means the price would have to multiply roughly seventeenfold from here to reach the record again. At a circulating supply of 589.24 trillion tokens, that would correspond to a market capitalisation of more than $50 billion.

For completeness: over twelve months Shiba Inu stands at minus 53.9 percent. The five-year gap is therefore not simply a memory of 2021, it is still widening.

How to check your purchase date for the holding period

For investors in Germany, the tax treatment of a sale depends not on the price level but on the purchase date. Gains from selling crypto-assets count as private disposal transactions under section 23 of the Income Tax Act. The holding period is one year. Hold for longer and then sell, and no tax falls due on the gain.

The flip side concerns losses, and in the current situation it is the more important point. A loss from a private disposal transaction can only be offset against gains from the same kind of transaction, so against gains from other crypto sales in the same year, not against interest or dividends. Sell after the one-year period has run, and the transaction is irrelevant for tax: the gain would have been tax-free, and that is precisely why the loss can no longer be claimed.

In concrete terms: pull up the purchase statements for your Shiba Inu positions and write the date next to each one. Where a purchase goes back less than twelve months, a loss from it can be offset in the current year. Where it goes back further, it cannot. With several purchases at different times, the order of acquisition applies in practice: units bought first count as sold first. The allowance for private disposal transactions is 1,000 euros a year; stay below that in total gains and no tax falls due, exceed it and the entire amount is taxable.

Whether and how the one-year period changes has been politically under discussion for months. We track the current state of play, and it is linked in the final section.

Buying route and custody for a coin with 589 trillion tokens in circulation

Shiba Inu is a token on the Ethereum blockchain, not a standalone network with its own coinage. Of the total supply of 589.50 trillion tokens, 589.24 trillion are in circulation, which is 99.96 percent. For you that means no large locked holdings are outstanding that could come onto the market additionally at a later point. The supply is already fully distributed.

On the buying route, the European crypto regulation MiCA means providers need a licence to sell and hold crypto-assets for retail clients in the EU. In case of doubt you can verify that: licensed providers list their licence and supervisory authority in the imprint or in the legal notices, and the supervisor of the home country maintains public registers.

On custody: because Shiba Inu is an ERC-20 token, it can be held in any wallet that supports Ethereum tokens, including common hardware wallets. Anyone holding larger amounts who does not want to trade them at short notice can therefore move them off the exchange. A network fee in ether applies on withdrawal, and it is independent of the size of the amount transferred. With small positions it can therefore account for a noticeable share.

Our reading: the thin market weighs more than the supply

From the newsroom's point of view, the turnover ratio of 1.8 percent explains October better than any single piece of news. The evidence sits side by side: Shiba Inu and Dogecoin, the two meme coins with the lowest turnover ratios of the three compared, lost 17.4 and 19.1 percent over 30 days. Pepe, at 14.5 percent turnover, gained 2.7 percent. In a thin market, moderate selling is enough to press the price down for weeks, because there is barely any other side in the order book.

Against that stands the small sample. Three coins are not proof, and over a single month any correlation can be assembled by chance. For the reading that means the $0.0000050 level is the point at which it shows whether the buying side returns. As long as the price stays below it, the thin other side remains the determining factor. None of this is a recommendation to buy or sell.

Shiba Inu in October: the picture turns only above $0.0000050

Three steps make sense now:

  1. Check the execution. Compare the spread between buying and selling price for Shiba Inu at your venue and place orders on limit rather than market. Which exchanges are licensed in Germany and what they cost is in our comparison of crypto exchanges.
  2. Gather the purchase dates. Note the acquisition date for each position and check which of them fall inside the one-year period. Anyone with many purchases spread across several exchanges will sort that faster with a portfolio tracker with a tax function than by hand.
  3. Keep the period in view. Whether the one-year holding period stays in its current form is politically open. We track the state of play on our page on the holding period for crypto-assets.
