Ethereum price prediction: $2.9 billion outflow, what to watch now
The context: around 143 billion dollars in stablecoins sit on the Ethereum blockchain, 2.9 billion less than 30 days ago, while ether stands at 2,306.86 dollars on Tuesday morning. Balance, outflow and price are documented; what our editorial team concludes from that for the days around Wednesday's rate decision comes further down in the text.

Around 143 billion dollars in stablecoins sit on the Ethereum blockchain on Tuesday morning, and that balance has shrunk by 2.9 billion dollars in 30 days. This is the number that says more about the coming days than the price itself: stablecoins are the cash of the blockchain, and how much of it lies ready decides whether a buying impulse has any mass behind it at all. Ether, meanwhile, stands at 2,306.86 dollars, 0.87 percent below Monday morning's level.
What is documented: the stablecoin balance on Ethereum is falling for the third month in a row, network fees picked up again on Monday, and the options market is pricing a 2.8 percent range for the next 24 hours. Our assessment follows further down: we consider the liquidity outflow the weightier argument of the two, ahead of the US Federal Reserve's rate decision on Wednesday. Where the price can point on a horizon of months is set out in our Ethereum price prediction.
Around 143 billion dollars in stablecoins sit on Ethereum
The data service DefiLlama lists 143.1 billion dollars in stablecoins for Ethereum on October 27 in its daily series; the blockchain overview from the same source arrives at 142.1 billion at the same moment. The spread of about one percent stands as it is and is not smoothed over here. In both cases what is meant are dollar tokens such as USDT, USDC and PYUSD that sit as balances on Ethereum and can be swapped into ether or other crypto assets at any time.
A stablecoin is a token pegged to a currency, which is why it has no price of its own. For an investor it is the parking space between two decisions: anyone who sells without going back into euros usually holds a dollar token afterwards. The more of them sit on a blockchain, the more purchasing power waits there for an entry point.
For comparison: ether itself reaches a market capitalisation of around 282 billion dollars. The dollar balance on its own blockchain therefore amounts to roughly half the value of all ether combined.
Why the stablecoin supply runs ahead of the price
The connection is mechanical, not an attempt at interpretation. Anyone buying on an exchange without a euro pair needs a dollar token first. Anyone swapping in a decentralised market on Ethereum needs one too, because almost every trading pair there runs against USDT or USDC. When the balance rises, the number of accounts that can step in at any time grows. When it falls, dollars leave the blockchain, usually via a payout into euros or a move to another blockchain.
No automatic mechanism follows from this. A growing balance can sit untouched for weeks without anyone buying. But a shrinking balance reduces the ceiling on how much demand can arise on any given day at all. That is precisely why professional market participants look at this series before they look at the chart.
Almost half of all dollar tokens sit on a single blockchain
Across all blockchains, DefiLlama counts 298.6 billion dollars in stablecoins on October 27. Ethereum carries 142.1 billion of that, which is 47.6 percent. The distribution shows how concentrated this capital is:
| Blockchain | Stablecoins in billions of dollars | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Ethereum | 142.1 | 47.6 percent |
| Tron | 93.9 | 31.4 percent |
| Solana | 15.3 | 5.1 percent |
| BNB Chain | 13.1 | 4.4 percent |
| Hyperliquid L1 | 6.9 | 2.3 percent |
| Base | 5.1 | 1.7 percent |
For Ethereum this concentration is an asset and a risk at once. On one hand the blockchain remains the place where institutional dollar capital sits. On the other, every shift to Tron or to a layer-2 blockchain becomes visible immediately. Anyone wanting to know how the various dollar tokens differ and where they can be traded will find the overview in our stablecoin comparison.
2.9 billion dollars less than 30 days ago
On September 27 the same series still stood at 146.0 billion dollars. Since then 2.9 billion have flowed out, a fall of 2.00 percent. Measured over seven days it is 1.2 billion dollars, or 0.86 percent. The outflow is therefore steady rather than abrupt, which argues against a single large withdrawal and in favour of a broad movement across many accounts.
Ethereum reached its peak on November 12, 2025, at 167.7 billion dollars. Today's level is 14.7 percent short of that. Over the same period the ether price has lost considerably more, which shows that dollar capital is leaving the blockchain more slowly than the price is falling.
For the days around the rate decision that means: the ammunition is lying ready, it is simply getting a little smaller every day. A buying impulse out of this liquidity remains possible, but it would have to come from the existing balance and not from fresh money.

The options market is pricing a 2.8 percent daily range for Ethereum
The DVOL volatility index of the Deribit derivatives exchange stood at 52.91 for Ethereum on Tuesday morning. The index states the expected fluctuation on an annual basis in percent. Divided by the square root of 365, that gives an expected daily range of 2.77 percent, so measured from the current price a band between roughly 2,243 and 2,371 dollars.
For Bitcoin the same index stands at 38.11 and therefore at an expected daily range of 1.99 percent. On this Tuesday the market thus credits ether with a movement 39 percent larger than bitcoin's. Anyone holding both carries the larger share of the risk in ether, even if the position is smaller in euro terms.
Find an exchange for your dollar tokensTwice as many calls as puts on Deribit
On Tuesday morning Deribit showed 1,506,151 open ether options contracts. One contract corresponds to one ether. Of those, 1,006,870 contracts are calls, meaning the right to buy, and 499,281 are puts, the right to sell. The ratio of puts to calls therefore stands at 0.50. Two out of three open contracts are positioned for rising prices.
This number is not a price target and not a majority opinion. A call is also bought to hedge a short position, and a trader can stand on both sides. What it does show is the direction in which the market has laid its powder, and that direction is clearly upwards.
The distribution across expiry dates is worth noting. December 25 accounts for 616,283 contracts and therefore 40.9 percent of total open interest, around 1.42 billion dollars in notional value. The next expiry, on October 30, carries 328,442 contracts, or 21.8 percent. The derivatives market has therefore placed its weight beyond the rate decision and beyond the October expiry. The US Federal Open Market Committee meets on October 27 and 28 and decides on Wednesday at 7 p.m. German time, without new economic projections; this is set out in the Federal Reserve's meeting calendar.
Network fees of 269,520 dollars in a single day
The fees users paid for transactions on Ethereum on Monday add up to 269,520 dollars, according to DefiLlama. On Sunday it was 165,795 dollars, a good 60 percent less. Over the past 30 days the total comes to 15.3 million dollars.
Fees are the most direct measure of demand for blockspace, because they only arise when someone does something. That they picked up again on Monday while the stablecoin balance kept falling fits a market in which positions are being reshuffled. Money is moving; very little new money is coming in.
Sentiment remains undecided in the meantime. The Fear and Greed Index stood at 48 points on Monday, in neutral territory, after 50 points on Sunday.

Leverage, liquidation distance and the levels at 2,294 and 2,338 dollars
Over the past 24 hours the low was 2,294.84 dollars and the high 2,338.49 dollars. Trading volume came to 8.49 billion dollars. Both levels are grounded rather than picked out of the air: that is where trading actually took place most recently. Above them sits the 200-day average, which our editorial team measured at 2,329 dollars on Monday evening.
This is where implied volatility becomes practical. From 52.91 percent annual volatility follows an expected weekly range of 7.34 percent and a monthly range of 15.27 percent. Anyone working with fivefold leverage loses around 13.9 percent of their stake on a full daily move to the downside. Anyone working with tenfold leverage is liquidated, arithmetically, at a price distance of about 10 percent, so at around 2,076 dollars; the expected monthly range exceeds that distance.
From this follows a concrete calculation for an account in Germany: if the liquidation price lies within the band from 2,243 to 2,371 dollars, an ordinary trading day is enough to close the position. Additional margin calls are excluded for retail clients on products offered in the EU, but the stake is gone in full.
Compare hardware wallets for your etherThe price has moved by 3 dollars since Monday evening
When we wrote on Monday evening about the break of the 200-day average in Ethereum, ether stood at 2,303.42 dollars. Since then 3.44 dollars have been added, a gain of 0.15 percent. The price therefore remains below the average line of 2,329 dollars, which was breached on Monday for the first time since August 20.
The upper level from that article, 2,457 dollars, is unchanged in being far away: 6.5 percent short. What has changed since then is above all the view downwards, because at 2,294.84 dollars the daily low now sits beneath Monday's price. What is new is the liquidity side, which Monday's article did not cover: the stablecoin balance has fallen by a further 0.65 billion dollars since the weekend.
Liquidity weighs more heavily than Wednesday's interest rate
Our assessment: the rate decision on Wednesday will move the price for a few hours, the stablecoin outflow will move it for weeks. Three pieces of evidence from this article support that. First, the options market has placed its weight with 40.9 percent of open interest on December 25 and not on the expiry directly after the meeting. Second, the dollar balance on Ethereum has fallen by 2.9 billion over 30 days, steadily and spread across many accounts. Third, the price sits below the 200-day average without any visible buyer pulling that line back.
Against that stands the call-heavy derivatives market with a put-call ratio of 0.50, and the fact that network fees picked up again on Monday. Both are signs that capital is not giving up but waiting. This assessment appraises the situation and is not a recommendation to buy or sell. With crypto assets, a total loss is possible.
Stablecoin outflow: below 2,294 dollars it turns into a direction
Three steps an investor in Germany can work through on this Tuesday:
- Check the buying route. Anyone wanting to buy more needs either a euro pair or a dollar token. The fees for that differ between venues by a multiple; the exchange comparison shows the terms of EU-authorised providers side by side.
- Settle the custody question. Anyone wanting to hold ether beyond the rate decision should know whether the holdings sit on the exchange or in their own custody. Which devices are available for that is set out in the hardware wallet comparison.
- Bring the records up to date. Every swap of ether into a dollar token is a sale for tax purposes, even when no euro changes hands. Anyone reshuffling within the fluctuation needs gap-free records; suitable tools are set out in the comparison of tax tools. The method behind the calculation can be followed in Deribit's volatility statistics, which were used here for the fluctuation figures.
