Mining difficulty jumps almost 6 percent today: why Bitcoin miners have no cushion this time
Bitcoin network mining difficulty rises by almost 6 percent on Friday afternoon, the steepest step up since June. Because transaction fees carry only 0.65 percent of mining revenue, the cost jump hits miners without any cushion at all.

The Bitcoin network recalibrates on Friday afternoon. Early in the afternoon, with block 971,712, mining difficulty rises by an estimated 5.9 percent. That is the steepest increase since June 27, and it follows a stretch in which practically nothing moved. The price stands at $82,298 on Friday morning, 1.3 percent above the previous day.
For the price question of the coming days, what counts is less the figure itself than what it demands of the miners. The data-centre operators deliver the same block reward for more computing work, and right now they have no fee cushion to absorb it. Where the price can point over a horizon of months is set out in our Bitcoin price prediction.
What block 971,712 changes in the Bitcoin network today
Every 2,016 blocks the network recalculates how long those blocks took and corrects difficulty so that the next block again averages ten minutes. The current period has reached 98.8 percent, with 25 blocks still to go. On mempool.space data, the median block time in this period was 9.45 minutes, a good half minute under target.
That half minute produces the upward correction. The estimate still shifts slightly with every new block: on Friday morning it moved between 5.84 and 5.91 percent. It is only fixed with block 971,712. The previous adjustment, on October 3, came to minus 0.03 percent, so it was a non-event.
Difficulty, hashrate and block time: the three numbers in this adjustment
What difficulty actually measures
Difficulty is the level a miner has to clear for the network to accept a block. The value currently stands at 132.7 trillion and is a pure computational figure with no unit. If it rises by 5.9 percent, a miner with unchanged hardware needs 5.9 percent more attempts for the same hit, and the share of the daily Bitcoin issuance falls accordingly.
The cause lies in the hashrate, meaning the total computing power of all miners. Measurements diverge here, because every provider smooths over a different window: mempool.space puts the current week at 1,032 exahashes per second, while blockchain.com shows 587 exahashes on the same day. The direction is the same in both series, the level is not, and that is why the block time of 9.45 minutes works better as hard evidence than any single hashrate figure.

How a difficulty increase works through to the Bitcoin price
The path from difficulty to price runs through the miners' cost accounting, and it is short. A miner sells part of his output continuously to pay for electricity, rent and hardware. When difficulty rises, his return in Bitcoin falls while the bill in euros or dollars stays the same. So he has to hand over more of his holdings to cover the same bill, or switch off the least efficient hardware.
Both have an effect, but in different directions. More selling out of mining hits the market as additional supply. Hardware switched off lowers the hashrate and leads to a downward correction at the next adjustment in fourteen days. The pressure is therefore a question for the next two weeks, not the next two hours.
One point for context: mining supply is small against exchange turnover. At 144 blocks a day, the block reward comes to 450 Bitcoin, which at $82,298 is around $37 million. Against that stands the $31.2 billion in daily turnover that CoinGecko reports for Bitcoin on Friday morning. A difficulty jump therefore does not move a price on its own; it moves the willingness of one group of sellers at the very levels currently being fought over.
Compare the fees at the major crypto exchangesOnly 0.65 percent of mining revenue comes from transaction fees
Here lies the point that sets this difficulty jump apart from earlier ones. Over the last 144 blocks, just under a day, miners took in 452.97 Bitcoin according to mempool.space figures. Of that, 450 Bitcoin was block reward and 2.97 Bitcoin transaction fees. Fees therefore carry 0.65 percent of revenue, a good 0.02 Bitcoin per block.
Sending a transfer currently costs 1 to 3 satoshis per byte for fast confirmation. The network is empty, and an empty network means one thing for miners: no extra income. In phases of heavy load the fee share has reached ten percent and more, and it then cushions a cost jump noticeably. Today it does not.

The block reward has stood at 3.125 Bitcoin per block since the halving in April 2024 and is fixed. For miners, the combination of a fixed return in Bitcoin, an empty mempool and 5.9 percent higher difficulty means that the cost per Bitcoin earned rises by almost six percent this weekend, with no offset whatsoever on the revenue side. If you hold your BTC at an exchange and watch inflows, the terms are in the comparison of crypto exchanges.
The last jump of this size came on June 27
A look along the series of adjustments shows how unusual almost six percent is. On mempool.space difficulty data for the past twelve months, there were only two increases of this size: 7.15 percent on June 27, 2026, and 14.73 percent on February 19, 2026. The other 23 adjustments of the year ranged between minus 10.09 percent and plus 4.16 percent, most of them around two percent.
The most recent adjustments at a glance: October 3 minus 0.03 percent, September 19 plus 4.16 percent, September 5 plus 1.31 percent, August 23 minus 1.31 percent. After two weeks of standstill, the correction therefore arrives in one block. What happened to the price after the June jump cannot be sold here as a pattern in good faith: two cases in twelve months are not a sample from which a direction can be derived.
Since Thursday's forecast: 18,029 contracts and a level that held
At midday on Thursday, our Bitcoin forecast on the options expiry asked whether $83,000 was within reach before today's expiry of 18,029 contracts. That question is now partly answered. The price fell back to $79,806 overnight into Friday, the low of the last 24 hours, and recovered the dip to $82,298 by the morning.
The $80,000 level has therefore held, and it held intraday rather than only on a closing basis. The $83,000 from Thursday's question did not fall before the expiry; the high of the 24 hours was $82,508. New since Thursday is the difficulty jump, which was not yet in view then, because the estimate only firms up over the final blocks.
Sentiment has turned too. The Fear and Greed Index from alternative.me stands at 63 points on Friday, in greed territory, after 53 points on Thursday and 62 on Wednesday. The dip to $79,806 did not frighten investors, then; it was bought.
Find a tax tool for your holding periodsThe levels above and below
Below: $79,806 and $80,000
The lower case rests on the low of the last 24 hours at $79,806. That is where the price turned up, and that is where the current recovery comes from. Above it sits the round $80,000 level, where hourly data shows buyers stepping in overnight. Below $79,806, the case for the recovery is gone and the next support lies lower. For context: over 30 days Bitcoin is up 8.6 percent, over seven days down 0.4 percent.
Above: $82,508 and $83,000
On the upside, $82,508 is the first hurdle, the high of the last 24 hours. Only above it does the $83,000 from Thursday's calculation come back within reach, a figure that followed from the distribution of the contracts expiring today. The price sits 34.8 percent below the all-time high of $126,080 from October 6, 2025, and the market capitalisation stands at $1.654 trillion.
How the difficulty jump fits that picture: it works against the upper level and for the lower risk, because it tends to raise supply out of mining. It is one factor among several, and not the strongest. Today's expiry and the fund flows move considerably larger sums on Friday.
Our reading of the difficulty jump
From the newsroom's point of view, this jump is an argument for patience and not for haste. The evidence: the fee share of 0.65 percent over the last 144 blocks leaves miners no cushion, and difficulty corrects almost six percent upwards. That raises the running selling pressure from a group that carries its costs in euros and dollars. At the same time, the amount affected, at roughly $37 million of daily production against $31.2 billion of daily turnover, is too small to set a direction.
What argues against overrating the point: the estimate is not yet fixed, with 25 blocks to go. Two comparable cases in twelve months yield no pattern. And the mechanism is self-correcting, because hardware switched off pulls the next adjustment in fourteen days downwards. Our reading for the coming days is therefore this: as long as $79,806 holds, the picture stays intact, and the difficulty jump is a reason to watch that level more closely, not to give it up. This is an assessment of the situation and not a recommendation to buy or sell.
Holding period and route to buying: the German framework on October 16
For investors in Germany, more hangs on today's date than the price question. Under current law, gains on cryptocurrencies are tax-free if more than a year lies between purchase and sale. Buy today and you reach that deadline on October 17, 2027. Anyone who bought before October 16, 2025, is already past it, and a sale would be tax-free under today's law.
That legal position was shaken in recent weeks, without result. Following our report on the cabinet date that passed, the December 31 cut-off stands unchanged. In practical terms for planning: the purchase date of each individual tranche counts, not the average of the holding, and with several purchases the order of acquisition applies in practice.
Three things can be settled today in a few minutes. First, the purchase date of the oldest tranche, because that governs whether a sale would be taxable at all. Second, the fees at your own trading venue, because at a price around $82,000 even half a percentage point of mark-up costs several hundred euros per Bitcoin. Third, the liquidation threshold on any open leveraged positions, because $79,806 and $82,508 are both within reach over the coming days.
Difficulty jump: with no fee cushion, the $80,000 level decides
Friday brings two dates together, the options expiry and the first clear difficulty adjustment since June. The price stands at $82,298, between the low at $79,806 and the high at $82,508. Three steps order that for the coming days:
- Pull together the purchase dates of your own tranches and check them against the one-year rule. If you have lost the overview, suitable tools are in the comparison of crypto tax tools.
- On open leveraged positions, calculate the liquidation threshold against $79,806, not against the current price. Which provider sets which margin rules is shown in the broker comparison.
- Match the trading costs of your own venue against the spreads of other providers before a new position goes on. The terms are in the exchange comparison.
