Canton (CC): universal burn approved, burning starts under the 2027 roadmap
The Super Validators of the Canton Network approved proposal CIP-0129 on October 21: dedicated synchronizers will no longer pay a licence fee to Digital Asset but will burn Canton Coin for their traffic. Under the roadmap this takes effect only in 2027, and the network currently mints about twice as much CC as it burns.

The Super Validators of the Canton Network approved proposal CIP-0129 on October 21, 2026. The network's dedicated synchronizers will therefore no longer pay a software licence to the company Digital Asset but will burn Canton Coin to pay for their traffic. Under the proposal's roadmap, this takes effect only in the first quarter of 2027.
If you hold CC, nothing changes in your wallet balance for now. The decision reaches into the economics of the network: a payment that used to land with the operator as a licence fee becomes a burning of tokens. How much that amounts to in the end depends on figures the proposal itself states, and one of them argues against the quick narrative of a scarce supply.
Universal burn: what the Super Validators approved on October 21
Super Validators are the voting operators of the Canton Network, who decide on changes to the protocol and its economics. According to the Canton Network post of October 21, they approved the framework for universal burn. The post states: “Universal Burn is coming to Canton Network. Once live, every mainnet synchronizer will burn Canton Coin to pay for traffic.” Digital Asset co-founder Yuval Rooz is cited in coverage of the vote as the source for the outcome.
Universal burn describes the rule that every productive synchronizer in the network pays for the traffic it processes, and that this payment is made in Canton Coin, which is destroyed in the process. A burn is the final removal of tokens from circulation: they are sent to an address from which nobody can move them again, and they thereby disappear from the circulating supply.
The proposal was written by Yiannis Varelas of 5North and Shaul Kfir of Digital Asset. The CIP text on universal burn carries the status October 2026 and is marked as a draft for discussion. That matters for the assessment: what has been approved is the framework, not every figure in it.
The link to the institutional part of the network is no coincidence. Canton has carried the tokenisation of US securities settlement since October, as we described in our piece on the launch of DTCC tokenisation on Canton. Anyone settling volume there generates traffic, and it is precisely this traffic the new billing attaches to.
Canton Coin at $0.1024: weekly high on voting day, then back down
Canton Coin stands at $0.1024, or €0.0914, according to CoinGecko as of Saturday midday. Over 24 hours that is a loss of 0.04 percent, over seven days a loss of 0.91 percent and over 30 days a loss of 5.5 percent. The market value comes to $4.09 billion, which corresponds to rank 27, with a circulating supply of 39.91 billion CC.
The course of the week says more than the weekly balance. The weekly high of $0.1155 fell on the evening of October 21, which is to say the day of the vote. The price then gave back the entire move and now trades around eleven percent below that high. The weekly low was $0.0970 on October 18, three days before the ballot. Over the past 24 hours CC moved between $0.0999 and $0.1054.
No documented connection between the vote and the price move can be derived from this. The reports on the price decline of October 22 and 23 cite no such reason, and the broad crypto market also gave ground over the same days. All that can be noted is the coincidence in time: the week's high came on the day of the decision, and it did not hold.
The price is 47.25 percent short of the all-time high of $0.1942 set on February 3, 2026. Trading volume over 24 hours comes to around $12.0 million, which is thin for an asset of this size and lets individual orders carry more weight.

What a synchronizer is and why it used to pay a licence fee
A synchronizer is the service in the Canton Network that puts transactions into an order and confirms them. Without it there is no binding sequence and therefore no settlement. The network knows two kinds: the Global Synchronizer, which everyone uses jointly, and dedicated synchronizers, which individual participants run for their own processes.
These dedicated synchronizers have so far run under commercial software licences with payments to Digital Asset. The proposal records that these fees will lapse while Digital Asset releases the core components of the network as open source. The text names no date for the release; it states only that it should happen soon.
In practice that means running a dedicated synchronizer becomes permissionless, without a platform licence of its own and without bilateral price negotiation. Anyone wanting to run one pays through the burn instead. That is the real lever of the decision, because it shifts money from a company into a mechanism that every holder is indirectly tied to.
Compare exchanges to buy your CC$60 per megabyte: how the CIP text bills traffic
The proposal names a list price of $60 per megabyte, payable in Canton Coin, which is burned in the process. What counts is therefore the volume of data a transaction sends, not its monetary value. For a typical transaction of 16.7 kilobytes, the text reckons with about one dollar.
The price of the Global Synchronizer stays at $60 per megabyte. Test environments remain free of charge. Applications may cover the fees for their users, and so-called paymasters can offer billing in local currency, so that an end user need notice nothing of the CC mechanism. Private configurations also burn CC for productive traffic.
To make the order of magnitude tangible, the text runs through a calculation: at one dollar per transaction and the same price everywhere, a throughput of 1,000 transactions per second would come to $31.5 billion a year. That is an illustration of the mechanism and not a forecast for the network.
That institutional usage is in fact emerging is no longer a pious hope. Ripple Custody added support for CC in October, which we assessed in our piece on the integration of Canton Coin with Ripple Custody. Custody with an institutional provider is the precondition for regulated houses to be allowed to hold the token at all.
Discounts and tiers: how the price falls with throughput
For dedicated synchronizers, the list price is only the starting point. Above one transaction per second, the price halves with every tenfold increase in throughput. Below that threshold the list price applies.
Two reductions come on top. A commitment discount of 50 percent requires collateral of at least 20 percent of the spending pledged for one year, which can rise to 100 percent. A loyalty discount brings 15 percent per year of commitment and reaches at most 60 percent.
Taking the tiers and reductions together, around 9.75 percent of the stated prices remain as net cost in the standard case, according to the proposal's own presentation. That figure stands on equal footing with the $60 per megabyte, and anyone reading only the list prices considerably overestimates the quantity burned.
Part of what is burned comes back into circulation as rewards. The text expects, without guaranteeing it, that at least 90 percent of the burned amount will be redistributed through the reward pools. Rewards for validators are capped at 20 cents per dollar of fees. Universal burn changes nothing, according to the text, about how minted rewards are split across the existing pools.

Twice as much minted as burned: the figure that contradicts the burn narrative
The most important qualification stands in the proposal itself: today the network mints about twice as much Canton Coin as it burns. As long as that ratio holds, supply keeps growing despite the burn, and an additional burn slows that growth rather than reversing it.
For universal burn to produce a scarcer supply, traffic in the network would have to rise far enough for burning to exceed minting. That is exactly what the mechanism is built for, because it ties the quantity burned to usage. Whether and when that point is reached, nobody predicts with evidence, and the text itself names no threshold for it.
Anyone wanting to track usage will find the more telling signals in the institutional part of the network: settled volumes, connected houses and the number of productive synchronizers. For regulated trading venues in Germany, authorisation remains the pivotal point, and which providers can show it is set out in our overview of regulated crypto exchanges.
Compare hardware wallets for your coinsFirst quarter of 2027: the roadmap names two phases
The proposal splits implementation into two steps. Phase one, estimated for the first quarter of 2027, brings the framework and the start of universal burn. Until a later submission settles the price curve, the Super Validators can vote on discounts for individual synchronizers case by case.
Phase two, estimated for the third quarter of 2027, fixes the price curve and its figures with a second submission and puts curve and discounts into operation. Both dates are explicitly estimates in the text and not committed deadlines. Anyone reading them as a deadline reads more into them than is there.
For the coming months that leaves a simple picture: the direction has been decided, the figures and the timing are open. Under this roadmap, more than a year lies between the October 21 vote and the first CC burned by a dedicated synchronizer.
Buying and holding Canton Coin: what applies in Germany under MiCA
MiCA is the EU regulation for markets in crypto-assets; it regulates providers and not private ownership. For investors, that means this on the buying route: a trading venue aimed at retail customers in Germany needs authorisation as a crypto-asset service provider, and that authorisation appears in the registers of BaFin and ESMA. With a secondary asset such as CC, it is worth checking before buying whether your own provider lists the pair at all and in which currency it settles.
On custody, the usual trade-off applies. A balance on an exchange is convenient and remains a claim against that exchange. Self-custody shifts the risk onto the safekeeping of your recovery words. That Canton Coin is supported at an institutional custodian says nothing about custody at home.
Leveraged products on an asset with $12.0 million in daily volume deserve particular care. In thin order books, price moves break through stop levels faster, and a leveraged position is liquidated as soon as the margin no longer suffices. In tax terms, the holding period remains the decisive point: for private sales of crypto-assets, the one-year holding period applies in Germany, and the DAC8 reporting obligation changes nothing about that, because it governs reporting and not taxation.
Levels at $0.0970 and $0.1155: where the price stood during the week
On the upside, the weekly high of $0.1155 from October 21 is the next documented level from the asset's own course, with the round $0.11 mark below it. On the downside stand the round $0.10 mark, which the price already undercut at $0.0999 over the past 24 hours, and below that the weekly low of $0.0970 from October 18.
These are observations from the week's course and not price targets. They say only where trading actually took place over the past seven days, and until universal burn is implemented the decision lacks the figure against which an effect on supply could be measured.
Canton burn: no synchronizer burns a single CC before 2027
Three steps make sense now:
- Check whether your trading venue lists CC at all and whether it is authorised for Germany. Our crypto exchange comparison gives an overview of the providers.
- Decide where your balance should sit before volume enters the asset. Which devices are suitable for self-custody is set out in our hardware wallet comparison.
- Keep a record of your purchase and sale data so the holding period can be proven later. The tools in our overview of crypto tax software help with that.
In short, the Canton Network has rebuilt its economics without anything changing for holders today. The decision replaces a licence fee with a burn, it makes running your own synchronizer permissionless, and under its own roadmap it takes effect only from the first quarter of 2027. Until then, the figure from the proposal itself remains the most important yardstick: roughly twice as much is currently minted as is burned.
