The US funds on Bitcoin took in a net $5.06 million on Thursday. That is the amount left over after all purchases and redemptions, and for this market it is close to zero. On Wednesday, $261.5 million had flowed out. The price stands at $81,963, or €72,984, on Friday morning and has moved in a range of a good $500 since midnight. Anyone buying or selling today is trading into a market from which the largest buyer group of the year has withdrawn for now.
The fund-flow figures come from Farside Investors, the service that collates the daily reports of the eleven US providers. The values are still adjusted in the following days as the issuers close their accounts. The direction is therefore more reliable than the second decimal place.
The price on Friday morning: $81,963 after the low at 79,806
On Friday morning Bitcoin trades at $81,963, 0.55 percent above its level of 24 hours earlier. The range over those 24 hours runs from $79,806 to $82,508, and it tells the story of two different days. On Thursday afternoon at around 3:55pm the price fell to $79,814, dropping below the round $80,000 mark for the first time in days. By Thursday evening at around 9:20pm it was back at $82,485, a gain of 3.3 percent from the low.
It has been quiet since. Since midnight the price has sat between $81,794 and $82,315. That is a range of $521, or 0.64 percent, calculated on the CoinGecko price series. For a market that clawed back $2,700 within six hours the day before, that amounts to a standstill.
Over the week the same picture of a jagged sideways move emerges. On October 10 Bitcoin stood at $82,564, on October 12 at $83,691, on October 13 at $81,795, on October 14 at $83,115 and on October 15 at $81,604. Six days, three changes of direction, and a 0.7 percent loss at the end.
Thursday's ETF flows: a net $5.06 million
A spot ETF on Bitcoin is a fund that holds real Bitcoin and whose shares trade on an exchange. When money comes in, the fund has to buy Bitcoin. When money goes out, it has to sell. The issuers' daily report is therefore one of the few figures that captures genuine demand in the spot market rather than merely a bet in the futures market.
BlackRock's IBIT takes in 16.79 million, Grayscale's Mini Trust gives up 7.64 million
Within Thursday's $5.06 million, two movements offset each other. BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust, the largest of these funds by assets, took in $16.79 million, bringing it to $65.64 billion of inflows since launch. The Grayscale Bitcoin Mini Trust lost $7.64 million on the same day, the largest single outflow of the day. The remaining providers barely moved.
On Wednesday the load was distributed the other way round and on a far larger scale. Of the $261.5 million that flowed out, $152.7 million came from Fidelity's FBTC and $110.9 million from BlackRock's IBIT. Bitwise was the only provider to record an inflow that day, at $2.2 million. That the same fund swings from a $110.9 million outflow to a $16.79 million inflow within 24 hours shows how erratic this demand currently is.
$5.06 million is roughly 62 Bitcoin, and miners create 450 a day
Figures in the millions sound large as long as nobody converts them into Bitcoin. At Friday morning's price, $5.06 million corresponds to roughly 62 Bitcoin. Wednesday's $261.5 million was around 3,190 Bitcoin, and October's outflow of $539.8 million adds up to about 6,590 Bitcoin.
Set against that is the quantity created fresh every day. Since the 2024 halving the network pays out 3.125 Bitcoin per block, and at around 144 blocks a day that gives roughly 450 new Bitcoin daily. The funds therefore absorbed just under 14 percent of a day's production on Thursday. On Wednesday they handed back seven times a day's production. That difference is exactly what explains why a Wednesday pushes the price down and a Thursday like the one just past neither lifts it nor holds it.
How an ETF inflow reaches the spot price at all
The route is shorter than many assume. Anyone buying an ETF share buys it on the exchange from another investor. Only when demand grows large enough for the share price to rise above the value of the Bitcoin held in custody do the admitted trading members step in, the so-called authorized participants. These houses create new shares, buy Bitcoin on the spot market to back them and earn the difference. That step is the one that reaches the order book, and only that step is reported as an inflow.
Redemptions work the other way round. If the share price falls below the value of the holdings, the trading members return shares, receive Bitcoin and sell it. An outflow of $261.5 million therefore means that Bitcoin worth 3,190 units came onto the market in a single day on top of normal supply. That is why this figure weighs more on the price than any headline about institutional interest.

October stands at a $539.8 million outflow, September brought in 2.6 billion
A single day says little, a month says more. For October, net flows through Thursday add up to an outflow of $539.8 million. September saw $2.6 billion flow in, August $3.5 billion, July $172.4 million. June remains the weakest month for these funds, with $4.5 billion flowing out.
Together the US spot ETFs hold $105.71 billion according to Thursday's figures, equivalent to 6.41 percent of Bitcoin's total market capitalisation of around $1.65 trillion. That size is the point: a group holding 6.41 percent of the supply and shifting seven times a day's production on some days helps set the direction. When it stands still, the price lacks direction, and that is precisely what has been visible since midnight.
Find an exchange for your Bitcoin purchaseWhat has changed since our Bitcoin article of October 14
On October 14 we set the Bitcoin price against its level a year earlier: €99,310 then, €74,239 on that day. Two days have passed since, and at €72,984 the euro price is another €1,255 lower. In dollars the gap is smaller: Bitcoin stood at $83,115 on October 14 and at $81,963 today.
The level that article was watching has held. Thursday's low at $79,814 stayed clearly above the 200-day line, which sat at $72,204 on October 14. What has been added since is the break of the 80,000 mark on Thursday afternoon, recovered within six hours, and the cooling of fund flows from a $261.5 million outflow to near zero.
Friday's levels: $79,806 below, $82,508 above
Two values from the past 24 hours are the most honest levels today, because both arose from real turnover. On the downside, the daily low of $79,806. Enough buyers stepped in there on Thursday to lift the price by 3.3 percent within six hours. If it falls there a second time and no counter-move follows, that block of buyers is spent.
On the upside, the daily high of $82,508. Above it begins the zone where the price failed twice, on October 12 and October 14, at $83,691 and $83,115. Every trade since Tuesday has taken place in the range between $79,800 and $82,500.
Friday's options expiry and the 18,029 contracts
One date is added today. As we reported on October 15 in our Bitcoin forecast based on Deribit data, 18,029 options contracts expire on Friday. An options expiry often pulls the price towards the level at which the largest share of those contracts expires worthless, because traders unwind their offsetting positions. The move ends with the expiry and says nothing about the week that follows. If you buy today, it is worth knowing that part of the move until this evening is technical in nature.
The editorial view: the fund standstill explains the narrow range
Our assessment: the $521 range since midnight follows directly from the figure in the fund reports. Three pieces of evidence support that. First, Wednesday's outflow day at $261.5 million corresponds directly to the low of $79,814 on Thursday afternoon. Second, with a net inflow of $5.06 million there is no buyer who could carry a move above $82,508. Third, the month is down $539.8 million, whereas September brought in $2.6 billion.
Against it stands the fact that fund flows capture only part of the market. On many days the futures market shifts a multiple of spot volume, and today's options expiry can blow the range apart for a few hours without any fund flow at all. Anyone treating the fund figure as the only signal misses that. As an explanation for the calm since midnight it still holds, and until new inflows are reported, the range between $79,800 and $82,500 remains the most likely frame.
That is an assessment of the situation, not a recommendation to buy or sell. With Bitcoin, a total loss of the amount invested is possible.

The one-year period under Section 23 of the Income Tax Act and the December 31 deadline
This is where the German position parts company with the American one. Under Section 23 of the German Income Tax Act, a gain on the sale of Bitcoin is tax-free if more than a year lies between purchase and sale. Within the year it counts as other income and is taxed at the personal rate, with an exemption threshold of €1,000 per calendar year. If that threshold is exceeded, the entire gain becomes taxable, not just the part above it.
The decisive date is therefore not today's Friday but the purchase date of each individual position. Anyone who bought in autumn 2025 is now past the one-year period. Anyone who bought in January or February 2026 will not reach it until 2027 and would trigger a taxable event by selling today, even at a price of €72,984.
Nothing has moved on the reform of this period this week. As we reported on October 15, the cabinet date passed without a decision, and the December 31 deadline stands for now. For planning purposes that means working with the one-year period in force, not with an announced one. Which purchase dates in your holdings come free and when is tracked automatically by the crypto tax tools in our comparison, including the order in which the tax office allocates purchases.
Compare tools for your crypto tax returnFees and custody: what a purchase on Friday costs
When a day's price range is 0.64 percent, the incidental costs become the main event. At many German providers the trading fee runs between 0.1 and 1.5 percent per side, plus the spread, that is, the gap between the bid and the ask. On a €1,000 stake that can come to €10 to €30 before the price has moved at all. Holding that figure against the $521 daily range is worth doing before you place an order today. Which provider runs which fee scale is set out in the best crypto exchanges hub.
The second question is custody. Bitcoin sitting on an exchange belongs to you economically, but the exchange holds the keys. For a holding meant to wait out the one-year period under Section 23 of the Income Tax Act, self-custody is the calmer option, because it does not depend on a provider's solvency. Anyone trading regularly, by contrast, needs the exchange and its liquidity.
The third point concerns leverage. This week's figures show what happens when many people work with borrowed money: the slide to $79,814 on Thursday afternoon was only 3.3 percent from the daily high, but at tenfold leverage that is enough for a liquidation. If you trade derivatives, measure the distance to your liquidation threshold against the daily range of $2,700 that proved possible this week.
Bitcoin price: without new ETF inflows the 82,000 range stays
The situation on this Friday morning can be summed up in one sentence: the price stands at $81,963, the largest buyer group of the year took in a net 62 Bitcoin on Thursday, and until that changes the frame between $79,800 and $82,500 is set. Three steps follow from that for the day:
- Look up the purchase date of your positions. Only purchases older than a year can be sold tax-free under Section 23 of the Income Tax Act. The crypto tax tools list the deadlines position by position.
- Weigh the fee scale against the daily range. With a 0.64 percent move since midnight, the fee decides the outcome. The providers' terms are set out in the best crypto exchanges hub.
- With leverage, measure the distance to liquidation. On Thursday, 3.3 percent was enough to clear tenfold leveraged positions. What the platforms require in collateral and fees is shown by the best perp DEX hub.
The next reliable figure on fund flows arrives on Monday, when the reports for Friday are in. Until then, this evening's options expiry remains the only date with an effect on the price.
