Bitcoin Price After a $643 Million ETF Outflow: Here Are the Reasons

Some context: $643.33 million flowed out of the US bitcoin ETFs on October 30, the largest daily outflow since June 25. The price still stands at $77,514 on Saturday midday, 0.22 percent above the previous day. Why that is, and what the one-year holding period in December has to do with it.

What is documented: the eleven US spot ETFs on Bitcoin recorded a net outflow of $643.33 million on Friday, October 30, as measured by Farside Investors and put at almost the same figure, $643.2 million, by SoSoValue. The bitcoin price stands at $77,514 or €69,212 on Saturday midday, 0.22 percent above the previous day, as of October 31 according to data from CoinGecko. Our assessment follows further down: the outflow measures the behaviour of one particular group of investors and not selling pressure on the spot market, which is why no price target can be derived from it alone.

How the outflow is spread across the individual bitcoin ETFs

Three funds account for almost the entire daily outflow. $233.7 million left BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust, $201.0 million the Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund and $129.5 million the ARK 21Shares Bitcoin ETF. Together that is $564.2 million, or 87.7 percent of the daily total; the two largest providers alone account for 67.6 percent.

This distribution matters more for the interpretation than the headline figure. An outflow concentrated in the three largest and most liquid products points to institutional rebalancing at month-end, not to a flight from the asset class. In a broad wave of selling, the smaller funds from Bitwise, VanEck or Grayscale would give up ground noticeably too.

The outflow ends a run of four trading days with inflows. On Thursday, October 29, $17.1 million was still flowing in. After Friday the funds manage $98.14 billion; since their launch in January 2024, net inflows add up to $56.98 billion.

How an ETF outflow reaches the spot market through the authorized participants

A net outflow of $643 million does not mean that bitcoin worth $643 million was sold on an exchange that day. The route runs through the so-called authorized participants, that is, approved trading houses that alone may create and redeem shares of the fund.

When an authorized participant redeems shares, the fund dissolves the bitcoin quantity behind them and pays out in dollars. When and where the trading house actually releases the coins afterwards is its own decision: spread over several days, off-exchange to another large buyer, or against a position of its own in the futures market. Some of the redemptions never reach the market at all; they are netted against holdings that the same house is building up elsewhere.

That is why the daily figure for ETF flows is a sentiment gauge with a lag and not an order book. Anyone who wants to understand the mechanics behind it will find the basics on structure, costs and approval in our overview of which crypto ETFs are tradable in Germany in the first place.

Bitcoin price at $77,514: the range of the past 24 hours

The price moved between $76,338 and $77,932 over the past 24 hours. That is $1,594 apart, or 2.09 percent, a quiet range for the week just gone. From the current level, the daily low sits 1.52 percent away.

On a weekly view bitcoin is down 3.73 percent, over 30 days 7.61 percent. From the all-time high at $126,080 of October 6, 2025, the price is 38.5 percent away. Market capitalisation stands at $1.558 trillion, trading volume over the past 24 hours at $151.8 billion.

Yesterday morning the price stood at $78,186 at this point, as our report on the monthly close recorded. Since then bitcoin has given up $672, or 0.86 percent, and the low at $76,338 has slipped $105 deeper than the overnight low of $76,443 named back then. The 76,000 mark has held, and on two consecutive days at that.

0.66 percent of fund assets: the outflow in proportion

The absolute figure sounds large; the proportion places it. $643.33 million corresponds to 0.66 percent of the $98.14 billion sitting in the eleven funds. Measured against cumulative net inflows since January 2024, it is 1.13 percent. And held against bitcoin turnover on a single day of $151.8 billion, the outflow amounts to 0.42 percent.

Converted into coins, $643.33 million is around 8,300 bitcoin at the current price. That is roughly the quantity the spot market turns over in less than an hour on a normal trading day. None of these three ratios appears in the usual daily reports, and they explain the gap between the headline and the quiet chart better than any single number.

For investors in Germany, December 31 is the date with consequences; the ETF outflow is not.

The comparison with June 25: $691.7 million and a different starting point

The last larger daily outflow is four months back. On June 25, 2026, the funds lost $691.7 million according to figures from Farside Investors, so $48.4 million or 7.0 percent more than last Friday. That June day did not stand alone, however: in the trading week from June 22 to 26, around $1.79 billion flowed out of the US bitcoin ETFs.

Therein lies the real difference from today's situation. In June the outflow was the fourth red day in a run; now it is the first after four days of inflows. A single outflow day following a run of inflows has historically had a different knock-on effect than an outflow day in the middle of a week in which money is withdrawn every day. That is why Monday is the more telling marker than Friday.

$427 million in liquidations: the pressure came from leverage

On Friday, leveraged positions worth $427 million were forcibly closed on the crypto market, predominantly long positions, that is, bets on rising prices. This figure explains the brief slide below $77,000 more precisely than the ETF movement: anyone betting on a rising price with borrowed money who breaches the margin threshold is sold out by the exchange, regardless of what they themselves consider right.

So a second point of reference alongside the chart is the futures market. If the price falls into a zone where many margin thresholds sit close together, the forced sales amplify the move for a few minutes without a single long-term holder having sold anything. After that the market runs out of leverage and the move peters out. Friday showed exactly this pattern.

Forced sales of leveraged positions set each other off, but only as long as there is leverage in the market.

The ether funds also gave up ground on Friday, $156 million there. Bitcoin and ether together come to $799 million of outflows in one day. Anyone using leveraged products carries this risk irrespective of their view of the market: the level of the margin threshold is set by the exchange, not by the investor.

Fear and Greed Index at 30 points: sentiment sits below the price

The Fear and Greed Index from Alternative.me stands at 30 points on October 31 and therefore in the fear zone. Two days ago it was still at 51 points and therefore neutral. So the index fell by 21 points while the price lost less than one percent over the same period.

The gap between sentiment and price is the more interesting finding of the weekend. This gap arises when an event dominates the news without asserting itself in the price. In the current case that event is the attack on Binance with damage of $6.3 billion, for which the exchange has built a buffer of $6.34 billion and announced a proof of reserves by Monday.

Holding period and the exemption limit: December 31 is the real deadline

For a German investor the most important number this weekend comes from the calendar rather than from the ETF outflow. Under section 23 of the German Income Tax Act, gains on crypto assets held in private wealth remain tax-free if more than twelve months lie between purchase and sale. Within that one-year period the personal income tax rate of 14 to 45 percent applies.

The exemption limit is €1,000 for all private disposals in a year taken together. The word limit matters: once it is exceeded, the entire gain is taxable and not only the amount above the €1,000. Anyone who has already realised €950 of gains this year triggers tax on €1,050 with a further sale producing €100 of gain.

The reverse applies to losses. A sale at a loss within the one-year period can be offset against gains from other private disposals in the same year, and only against those, not against equity gains or interest. The decisive date is the day of the sale: anyone wanting to use a loss in their 2026 tax return must have sold by December 31. Which tools track acquisition dates and the one-year period automatically for each position is shown by the comparison of crypto tax software.

Whether the one-year period survives is open. A draft bill from the German Federal Ministry of Finance dated September 30, 2026, would treat crypto assets as investment income under section 20 of the Income Tax Act, with 25 percent withholding tax regardless of the holding period, but with the saver's allowance of €1,000. The federal cabinet did not adopt the draft on October 14, it is stuck in interdepartmental coordination, and the new rules are in any case only meant to apply to crypto assets acquired after December 31, 2026. We track the current state of the procedure on our page on the crypto holding period.

What has changed for buying and custody after the Binance attack

The attack on Binance has two practical consequences that hold regardless of the price. First, the resumption of withdrawals is running in phases, not for all crypto assets at the same time. Anyone holding balances on a single exchange who wants access to them at short notice on Monday should check today whether their asset is included in the current phase.

Second, the proof of reserves that Binance has announced for Monday is a document with a cut-off date and not a running guarantee. It shows that funds of a certain size were present at a particular moment. For amounts that are not meant to be traded, custody under your own control remains the alternative with the lower counterparty risk, with everything that entails in terms of responsibility for securing access credentials. Which exchanges are authorised under MiCA in the EU and what fees they charge on purchase is set out in the comparison of crypto exchanges.

Our assessment: a signal from the fund wrapper, not a reason for the price

In the editorial team's view, the outflow of October 30 is to be taken seriously as a picture of sentiment and is unsuitable as an explanation of the price. Three pieces of evidence from this text support that: the outflow amounts to 0.66 percent of fund assets and 0.42 percent of daily turnover, 87.7 percent of it is spread across the three largest products, and the price closed the day 0.22 percent up. The measured selling pressure of Friday came from leverage, with $427 million in forced closures, not from the fund wrapper.

Against that stands the run. For four months there was no day of this size, and in June a comparable outflow stood at the start of a week with $1.79 billion of redemptions. Should money flow out in three-digit millions again on Monday and Tuesday, the reading as month-end rebalancing would be refuted. The marker that decides this is not the price but the second red daily figure in a row. This is not a buy or sell recommendation; with crypto assets a total loss remains possible.

ETF outflows: only a second red day turns this into a trend

Three steps order the weekend for a German investor:

  1. Check the one-year period for each position. Which holdings have passed the twelve months on December 31 and which have not decides the tax burden of a sale. A tax tool or portfolio tracker keeps track of the acquisition dates.
  2. Weigh up the buying route and the fees. Anyone buying into this situation pays markedly different spreads and order fees depending on the provider. The overview of authorised crypto exchanges names the terms for each house.
  3. Separate the part of your holdings that is not traded. For that share, custody under your own control lowers counterparty risk; the differences in security and handling are set out in the hardware wallet comparison.
