On Friday, 30 October 2026, the biggest names on Wall Street moved like meme tokens. Intel closed 28.6 percent lower, its worst day since 1974 according to CNN. Reddit lost 29.2 percent, the worst session since its 2024 IPO, as CNBC reported. Illumina fell 18.6 percent and Roblox 18.1 percent. The Nasdaq Composite dropped 2.86 percent to 25,437 points, the S&P 500 1.82 percent, both their worst day since June. For comparison: Bitcoin, the asset that is regularly called too volatile, has not lost more than 16 percent in a single day since March 2020. Here is what triggered the stock market crash, why US stocks now swing like crypto tokens, and what it means for the coming week.
Stock market crash on 30 October: the key facts
- Biggest losers: Reddit −29.2 %, Intel −28.6 %, Illumina −18.6 %, Roblox −18.1 %, SanDisk −13.5 %, AMD −10.9 %.
- Indices: Nasdaq −2.86 %, S&P 500 −1.82 %, Dow Jones −1.09 %; the Nasdaq is down 7.8 percent from its record on 6 October.
- Trigger: doubts about the returns on AI spending after Alphabet's 12.6 percent drop on Thursday, plus weak outlooks from Intel, Reddit and Roblox.
- Meme-token volatility: Intel and Reddit fell almost twice as much in one day as Bitcoin on its worst day since 2020 (−16.0 % on 13 June 2022).
- October: the Nasdaq's worst month since March 2025, according to CNN.
- Next week: US midterm elections on Tuesday, AMD and Arm earnings, US jobs report on Friday, 6 November.
Crypto had its own shock a day earlier: the Binance hack on Thursday evening pushed Bitcoin below $78,000. Everything about that case is in our overview North Korea behind the Binance hack, and why prices are falling in general is tracked in our running explainer why is crypto down today.
Stock market crash today: the numbers for 30 October
The table shows Friday's closing prices and the moves against Thursday's close. Most of the big losers had reported quarterly results the evening before; the rest fell with the sector.
| Stock or index | Close 30 Oct | Change | Trigger |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reddit (RDDT) | $91.73 | −29.2 % | Google AI search costs traffic, weak Q4 outlook |
| Intel (INTC) | $65.76 | −28.6 % | Q4 outlook below expectations |
| Illumina (ILMN) | $235.99 | −18.6 % | Q3 revenue missed estimates |
| Roblox (RBLX) | $42.99 | −18.1 % | Q4 bookings forecast down year on year |
| SanDisk (SNDK) | $1,150.89 | −13.5 % | chip and hardware sell-off |
| AMD | $504.80 | −10.9 % | chip sell-off, results due Tuesday |
| Dell (DELL) | $424.30 | −10.8 % | hardware sell-off |
| Arm (ARM) | $205.97 | −10.0 % | chip sell-off, results due Wednesday |
| Nasdaq Composite | 25,437.00 | −2.86 % | worst day since June |
| S&P 500 | 7,580.07 | −1.82 % | worst day since June |
| Dow Jones | 51,770.31 | −1.09 % | value stocks held up better |
The volatility index VIX rose 12.9 percent to 19.42. That is a nervous reading, but far from panic levels. The panic took place in individual stocks, not in the index.

Regulated crypto exchanges comparedWhy is the stock market down today? Three triggers
The short answer: the fear of an AI bubble is back. Investors no longer reward AI spending unless the cash comes back, and several companies delivered outlooks that fell short at the same time.
1. AI spending without free cash flow. The sell-off started on Thursday with Alphabet. The Google parent fell 12.6 percent, its steepest drop since the 2004 IPO, wiping out roughly $500 billion in market value, CNBC reported. Investors balked at record capital spending and negative free cash flow. Amazon added to the doubts on Friday with higher AI spending and results that missed estimates.
2. Intel's outlook. Intel beat third-quarter estimates, but guided fourth-quarter revenue to $15 billion to $16 billion and adjusted earnings to 25 cents per share, both below expectations. The company blamed a PC market squeezed by soaring memory prices, and an explosion at its Israeli fab is expected to cost about $600 million in revenue over two quarters, according to Quartz. Before the report, the stock had gained around 150 percent this year. The US government's stake lost about $12 billion in value in one day.
3. Reddit and Google's AI search. CEO Steve Huffman said Google search referrals fell by more than one million per week on average in October and pointed directly at AI Overviews and AI Mode, as The Decoder summarised. Reddit guided fourth-quarter revenue to $1.00 billion to $1.03 billion, below the consensus of $1.05 billion. Roblox even beat on daily users with 138 million, but its bookings forecast implies a decline of 10 to 15 percent year on year.
Why US stocks now swing like meme tokens
Single-day moves of 18 to 29 percent used to be the territory of small tokens, not of a chip maker with five decades of history. Our comparison of daily closes shows how far the stock market has moved into crypto territory. Bitcoin's worst day since the Covid crash of March 2020 was 13 June 2022 with −16.0 percent; its worst day of 2026 so far was 5 February with −14.1 percent. Intel and Reddit fell almost twice as much on Friday. For Intel it was the worst day in our data series going back to 2005, ahead of 2 August 2024 (−26.1 %).
Three forces drive this volatility:
- Priced for perfection. Intel had gained around 150 percent this year, and the Nasdaq hit a record of 27,600 points on 6 October. When expectations are that high, a weak outlook leads to a repricing in a single session.
- One theme, many stocks. Artificial intelligence carries a large part of the market. When doubts hit Alphabet, they hit the whole chain at once: AMD −10.9 %, Arm −10.0 %, SanDisk −13.5 %, Dell −10.8 %, Nvidia −4.2 %.
- Rising rates. The Fed held its key rate at 3.75 to 4.00 percent on 28 October, but two officials, Lisa Cook and Beth Hammack, voted for a hike, as CNN reported. Futures markets price a hike in December at around 80 percent, according to the CME FedWatch tool. Higher rates lower the value of future profits, and growth stocks feel that first.
Reddit adds a fourth, newer risk: artificial intelligence does not only lift valuations, it can also erode business models. When Google answers questions directly, fewer people click through to the sources.

Crypto brokers comparedCrypto stocks fell harder than crypto
Listed crypto companies were hit along with tech. Coinbase fell 10.6 percent, Circle 9.3 percent, Strategy (MSTR) 7.8 percent and Robinhood 7.2 percent. Bitcoin itself slipped only 0.9 percent to about $77,165 over 24 hours to 23:51 UTC, according to CoinMarketCap, and Ether 0.4 percent. Equity investors cut risk across their portfolios, and crypto stocks sit at the volatile end of a tech portfolio. The coins themselves trade around the clock and had already priced in the Binance shock on Thursday night, when Bitcoin lost 4.3 percent.
What the stock market crash means for Bitcoin
Bitcoin has lost about 5 percent since Wednesday's close of $81,268, most of it on Thursday after the Binance hack. Leveraged traders paid for it: the sell-off wiped out about $1.5 billion in leveraged crypto bets, according to CoinDesk. On Friday, Bitcoin stayed in a range between about $76,300 and $78,600 while the Nasdaq slid.
Over the whole of October the picture evens out: Bitcoin ended the month around 7.6 percent lower, the Nasdaq around 5.3 percent. Gold did not offer protection either; it fell 3.6 percent on Friday and about 7 percent in October, as our analysis why gold is going down in this crisis shows.
Our view: Friday showed that Bitcoin can decouple from a tech sell-off for a day when the selling pressure in crypto has already happened. That is not a trend yet. If the Nasdaq keeps falling next week, Bitcoin will rarely escape it for long, because the same rate expectations weigh on both markets.
Next week: midterms, earnings and the jobs report
The coming week is one of the busiest of the year, as CNBC lists:
- Sunday, 1 November: Binance aims to reopen withdrawals; a full proof of reserves is promised by Monday.
- Monday, 2 November: Apple and Palantir report after the bell.
- Tuesday, 3 November: US midterm elections; AMD reports.
- Wednesday, 4 November: Arm and Qualcomm report.
- Friday, 6 November: October jobs report; FactSet expects 55,000 new jobs after 29,000 in September.
For crypto, the midterms matter most: control of Congress decides how quickly the market structure law moves. Prediction markets give the Democrats more than 90 percent for the House, according to an overview by Oddschecker. If you want to hold through the volatility, keep your coins on a regulated exchange or in your own wallet; our comparison of hardware wallets shows the options. This article is not investment advice.
