In less than 24 hours, crypto and Wall Street each had a historic shock. On Thursday, 29 October 2026, from 20:05 UTC, attackers drained about $6.3 billion from Binance, the largest crypto theft on record. On Friday, the Nasdaq had its worst day since June, Intel and Reddit lost about 29 percent each. Many readers ask whether the two events are connected. Our analysis of the timeline, the sizes and the money flows gives a clear answer: there is no evidence that the Binance hack caused the stock market crash. The stock losses were set off by quarterly results and outlooks, Alphabet's record drop even happened before the hack began. But both markets are linked by the same backdrop: expected rate hikes, doubts about the AI boom and a lot of leverage.
Binance hack and stock market crash: the key facts
- Timing: Alphabet fell 12.6 percent during Thursday's US session; the hack started five minutes after the US close.
- Sizes: Binance hack about $6.3 billion, of which about $3 billion frozen; Alphabet lost about $500 billion in market value on Thursday, Intel about $120 billion on Friday.
- Crypto liquidations: about $1.5 billion in leveraged bets, far too little to move the stock market.
- The real bridge: crypto stocks such as Coinbase (−10.6 %) and Strategy (−7.8 %), and the same rate expectations in both markets.
- Correlation: Bitcoin and the Nasdaq moved more closely together in October 2026 (0.62) than in 2025 as a whole (0.47).
- Reddit: Google's AI Overviews have existed since May 2024; what is new is that Reddit has put a number on the lost traffic.
The details of the hack are in our overview North Korea behind the Binance hack, the stock market sell-off in why US stocks now swing like meme tokens.
Crypto crash and stock market crash: the timeline
The order of events is the strongest argument against a direct link. All times in UTC:
| Time (UTC) | Event |
|---|---|
| Wed 28 Oct, evening | Fed holds rates, two officials vote for a hike; Alphabet reports after the US close |
| Thu 29 Oct, 13:30 to 20:00 | US session: Alphabet −12.6 %, about $500 billion in market value lost |
| Thu 29 Oct, 20:00 | US close; Intel, Reddit and Amazon publish quarterly results in the evening |
| Thu 29 Oct, 20:05 | Binance hack begins; most funds leave within about 20 minutes, according to TRM Labs |
| Fri 30 Oct, 01:36 | Binance suspends all deposits and withdrawals |
| Fri 30 Oct, 13:30 to 20:00 | US session: Intel −28.6 %, Reddit −29.2 %, Nasdaq −2.86 % |
The weak outlooks of Intel and Reddit were published on Thursday evening, in the same hours as the hack, but they came from the companies themselves and had been scheduled for weeks. Intel's stock was already falling in after-hours trading, as CNBC reported on Thursday evening.
Regulated crypto exchanges comparedCould the Binance hack have caused the stock market crash?
Hardly, and the sizes show why. The hack moved about $6.3 billion, and about $3 billion of it was frozen within hours, according to Binance. Crypto traders lost about $1.5 billion in leveraged bets in 24 hours, according to CoinDesk. On the stock market, the numbers are of a different order: Alphabet alone lost about $500 billion in market value on Thursday, according to CNBC, and Intel about $120 billion on Friday. That second figure follows from CNBC's report that the US government's 10 percent stake lost about $12 billion in value.
For a crypto event to drag down the stock market, there would have to be forced sellers who hold both: funds that need cash because of crypto losses and sell stocks for it. There is no sign of that. Binance has promised to cover all losses from its own funds, so its customers are not expected to bear them, and the attacker exchanged a part of the loot on decentralised exchanges, for example around 234 million USDT into the Tron token TRX, according to the blockchain analytics firm Elliptic. Those are amounts that disappear in the daily turnover of a single large US stock.

Where crypto and Wall Street really meet
Unconnected the two markets are not. There are three bridges:
- Crypto stocks. Coinbase fell 10.6 percent on Friday, Circle 9.3 percent, Strategy 7.8 percent and Robinhood 7.2 percent. These companies are part of tech portfolios and were sold with them, while Bitcoin itself slipped only 0.9 percent over 24 hours.
- The same rate expectations. The Fed held rates at 3.75 to 4.00 percent on 28 October, but futures markets price a hike in December at around 80 percent, according to the CME FedWatch tool. Higher rates weigh on everything that is valued on future growth, from AI stocks to Bitcoin.
- Correlation. We compared the daily returns of Bitcoin and the Nasdaq Composite. In October 2026 the correlation was 0.62, for 2026 as a whole 0.46, for 2025 0.47. In stressful weeks, the two markets move more closely together.
Over the month the result is similar: Bitcoin ended October around 7.6 percent lower, the Nasdaq around 5.3 percent, and gold lost about 7 percent as well. Why gold did not help either is explained in our analysis why gold is going down.

Hold your coins yourself: hardware wallets comparedWhy Reddit crashed now, although AI Overviews are not new
Google has shown AI-generated answers above the search results in the US since May 2024, and launched the chatbot-style AI Mode for all US users in May 2025. That fewer people click through to websites has been discussed ever since. Three things are new: Reddit's CEO Steve Huffman put a number on it, with more than one million fewer Google referrals per week on average in October; Reddit's revenue outlook fell short of expectations; and the company is testing whether users will have to log in. Reddit's data-licensing deal with Google is also up for renewal, as Decrypt reports. A known risk became a measurable loss, and that is when stock prices react.
Coincidence? What we know about the timing
That two shocks fall on the same evening looks suspicious, but the earnings dates of Intel, Reddit and Amazon were public weeks in advance, and the hack is attributed with high confidence to North Korea's TraderTraitor group by TRM Labs and, as likely, by Chainalysis. Whether the attackers deliberately chose the minutes after the US close, when Western trading desks wind down, is not known. There is no public evidence of any coordination between the hack and the stock market. We have checked the theories circulating about Binance, its founder and US politics separately.
Our view: the crypto crash and the stock market crash of this week are two separate shocks that hit an already nervous market at the same time. The connection lies in the backdrop, not in a plan. That is exactly why the next days matter for both markets.
What happens next

- Monday, 2 November: Apple and Palantir report.
- Tuesday, 3 November: US midterm elections, AMD reports.
