USDC on 82 million Samsung phones: the level that decides for Solana
In the last week of October, Samsung is switching on USDC transfers over Solana on 82 million Galaxy devices, with custody through Bastion and Coinbase. What that means for the SOL price we measure against fees, emission and fund flows.

Here is what is documented: in the last week of October, Samsung is switching on USDC transfers over the Solana blockchain inside Samsung Wallet, on 82 million Galaxy devices in the United States, with payouts in more than 60 countries. Our assessment follows further down: for the price, the launch is an argument for the coming quarters, not for this week.
SOL stands at $100.84, or €90.01, on Sunday afternoon, 0.35 percent above the previous day. Over a week it is down 1.99 percent, over a month 15.65 percent. The daily low was $98.81, the daily high $102.63. Where the price can point over a horizon of months is set out in our Solana price prediction.
Samsung Wallet and USDC on Solana: where things stand before the launch
Samsung and the Solana Foundation announced the cooperation on October 7. The statement says in so many words that Samsung Wallet will support cross-border USDC transfers over Solana from the last week of October. This week is that last week of October. Samsung has not named an exact calendar day within the week to this day, nor any fee level.
The function sits in the wallet itself, not in a second app. Users send USDC to compatible external wallets; at the start and at the end of the route, partners exchange into local currency. Technically, Solana settles the transfer, and custody runs through Bastion, a licensed custodian for stablecoins, with Coinbase as sub-custodian. Access is granted only to those who meet Samsung's registration, identity and authentication requirements.
What a stablecoin is
A stablecoin is a token whose value is tied to a currency, in the case of USDC to the US dollar at a ratio of one to one. The issuer, Circle, holds reserves for that purpose and redeems tokens for dollars. The token moves on a blockchain, the value stays with the currency.
82 million Galaxy devices, payouts in more than 60 countries
The 82 million describe the device base in the United States onto which the function is being rolled out, not the number of users who will switch it on. The statement names that difference itself. How many Galaxy owners actually set up a stablecoin transfer is not contained in any figure available today, and anyone who estimates it is inventing it.
The route targets remittances. Millions of people work in the United States and regularly send money to their countries of origin, and the traditional providers take fees at both ends. That is precisely where a transfer settled in seconds, with a network fee in the range of fractions of a cent, comes in.

Bastion and Coinbase: who holds custody of the transfers
The custody chain is the part the headlines skip over, and the part on which the risk for the user hangs. Bastion operates the framework for the payment and holds the tokens, Coinbase acts as sub-custodian. Samsung itself holds custody of nothing. For the user that means this: as long as the balance sits in the wallet function, they do not hold their own keys but a claim against a custodian.
Anyone who wants to hold the keys themselves cannot avoid a wallet of their own. Which devices are suitable and what they cost is set out in our comparison of hardware wallets.
Find an exchange for your SOLHow payment traffic affects the SOL price, and how it does not
It is worth looking at the mechanism here, because it is regularly told wrong. A USDC transfer does not buy any SOL. Network fees are paid in SOL, and they are tiny: according to the Solana documentation, the base fee is 5,000 lamports per signature, that is 0.000005 SOL, or roughly $0.0005 at today's price. Half of that base fee is burned, the other half goes to the validator that builds the block.
Scale that up and the order of magnitude becomes clear: even a million additional transfers a day would burn 2.5 SOL from it. Against an annual emission that, at an inflation rate of 3.5873 percent on 589.76 million circulating SOL, amounts to roughly 21 million new tokens, that is nothing. We queried the rate ourselves on Sunday via a Solana node, epoch 1067.
The path from payment traffic to the price therefore does not run through burned fees, but through three other channels. First, through demand for block space, which drives priority fees when the network is congested and with them the validators' income. Second, through the capital that stays on the blockchain as a stablecoin and flows from there into applications. Third, through the expectation among institutional investors that a blockchain with payment volume is less interchangeable than one without.
7.52 billion USDC already sit on Solana
How large the base is we measured directly on the blockchain on Sunday afternoon: 7.516 billion USDC are in circulation on Solana, queried through the token interface of a Solana node. That is the stock the Samsung function connects to, and it exists regardless of how many Galaxy users join in.
The priority fees show at the same time how much room the network currently has. Across the last 150 slots queried, the mean of the priority fees was zero: anyone sending a transaction on Sunday had to pay nothing extra to get through. A network without congestion has room for payment volume, but it also earns nothing extra from it.
Since the ETF outflow of October 24, that has changed
On Friday we wrote here about $30.3 million flowing out of the SOL ETFs in five trading days. Since then the price has barely moved from around $101; today it stands at $100.84. The $100 mark, which was the test on Friday, is holding over the weekend, but without inflows: according to the available data, fund flows have been negative in every session since October 5, while cumulatively, since the products launched, net inflows still stand at around $1.55 billion.
What is new compared with Friday is the payment angle. The outflow from the funds and a payment launch on 82 million devices act over different time frames: one shows up in the price the same day, the other, if at all, over quarters.

The levels: $98.81 below, $102.63 above
Two levels are justified for the coming days, and both come from today's trading. On the downside, the daily low is $98.81, just under the round $100. If the price falls below that and closes there, that is the first confirmation that $100 no longer holds. On the upside, the daily high stands at $102.63.
On the distance to the upside: from the all-time high of $293.31, reached on January 19, 2025, the price is 65.6 percent short. Market capitalization stands at $59.48 billion, turnover over the past 24 hours at $1.83 billion. All price figures in this section are as of Sunday afternoon.
Calculate your crypto tax for 2026USDC in Europe: what MiCA allows and what Samsung does not offer here
The function launches in the United States. In Europe it is not available, and Samsung has named no date for an extension either; it depends on approvals in the respective markets. Anyone waiting for a launch here is waiting for something that has no date.
What applies in Europe is set by the EU regulation MiCA. For every stablecoin offered here, it requires authorization of the issuer. USDC from the issuer Circle meets that through an e-money licence in France and is therefore available on trading venues in the EU; other dollar tokens were removed from European venues for this reason. For you that means: the token Samsung sends in the United States is the same one you can legally hold and exchange in Europe.
How to get USDC on Solana
The route runs through an exchange domiciled or licensed in the EU: open an account, prove your identity, deposit euros, buy USDC and withdraw to a Solana address. When withdrawing, you select the network explicitly, because USDC exists on several blockchains, and a withdrawal on the wrong network cannot be reimbursed. Which provider supports which networks and what the withdrawal costs is shown in our exchange comparison.
Tax: swapping SOL for USDC restarts the holding period
This point regularly costs money in Germany, and it concerns anyone who is thinking about a switch because of the payment news. Swapping SOL for USDC is not a neutral transaction but a private disposal under section 23 of the German Income Tax Act. You sell SOL and buy USDC: the gain between the purchase price and the sale price is taxable if less than a year lies between purchase and swap.
For the newly acquired USDC, the one-year period starts again on the day of the swap. Anyone who has held SOL for more than a year and swaps now gives up that period: the sale of the SOL stays tax free, the USDC start at zero. Conversely, a loss from the swap can be offset against other gains from private disposals. Anyone with several swaps in a year needs a schedule that lists every acquisition separately; which tools manage that is set out in our comparison of tax tools and portfolio trackers.
Paying with stablecoins and the exemption limit
Anyone who uses stablecoins to pay triggers the same transaction with every payment, provided a price difference arises. With a token tied to the dollar, what remains as a source of gain or loss for investors in the euro area is the euro-dollar exchange rate. An exemption limit applies to gains from private disposals: if the sum of all such gains in a year stays below it, no tax is due; if it is exceeded, the entire gain is taxable. Check the current amount before filing, as it has been raised in recent years. Anyone using a card to pay will find the settlement routes in our comparison of crypto credit cards.
Our assessment: a payment argument that does not carry the price this week
From the newsroom's point of view, the Samsung launch is the most important piece of news Solana has had in October, and it will hardly move the price this week. The calculation above argues for that: the fees burned from payment traffic carry no weight against an emission of roughly 21 million SOL a year, and the 82 million are devices, not users. Against it stands what the news is worth over the medium term: a corporation with this device base picks Solana as the rail for payments, and the 7.516 billion USDC already sitting here show that the infrastructure is in place.
What determines the price this week are the fund flows and the US Federal Reserve's rate decision on Wednesday. As long as the ETFs are losing money, the price lacks the buyer that secures the $100 mark from below. This assessment judges the situation; it is not a recommendation to buy or sell. Crypto investments can lead to total loss.
Samsung launch: without SOL demand, the $100 mark remains the test
- Check whether your provider supports USDC withdrawals on the Solana network and what they cost before you move tokens between blockchains. The network choice per provider is listed in our exchange comparison.
- Establish the acquisition date for every planned swap of SOL into USDC before you execute it: above one year of holding, you give up a tax-free position. The schedule for that is what the tax tools deliver.
- Set your levels before the rate decision arrives on Wednesday: $98.81 on the downside, $102.63 on the upside. Anyone leaving SOL untouched who wants a return from it will find the terms in our comparison of staking providers.
