Our Opinion
CoinGecko covers largely the same ground as CoinMarketCap but differs on one point that matters when assessing market data: the provider is not owned by an exchange. Anyone wanting to read volume and exchange data without that conflict has the structurally cleaner reference here.
In substance CoinGecko goes further in places: DEX data, on-chain liquidity, NFT floor prices and metrics on developer activity and community engagement are integrated. Basic API usage does not even require a key, which noticeably lowers the barrier for small projects.
The paid tiers target applications with higher call volumes and commercial use. Plan tiers and pricing change several times a year in practice and should be checked directly with the provider before subscribing. For deep on-chain analysis CoinGecko, like every aggregator, is the wrong address — specialised tools exist for that.
