Our Opinion
CoinMarketCap is the first stop for most users when it comes to prices, market capitalisation and rankings. Its strength is breadth and accessibility: anyone who simply wants to know where a coin stands gets there without an account and without prior knowledge.
It becomes interesting as a data source. The API is organised in tiers, starting with a free allowance covering a limited set of endpoints and history; commercial usage rights and full historical access are reserved for the paid tiers. Plan tiers and pricing change several times a year in practice and should be checked directly with the provider before subscribing.
One thing to place in context: CoinMarketCap belongs to Binance. That is not disqualifying, but it is worth knowing when interpreting exchange rankings and volume data. For deeper on-chain analysis the platform is not designed anyway — specialised tools are the right choice there.
