Chainlink after the withdrawal of 246,800 LINK from Binance: the consequences for price and custody
A single address has withdrawn 246,800 LINK from Binance over four days, roughly $3.06 million at the current price. What that says about tradable supply and what such a transfer triggers for you in tax terms.

A single, so far unattributed address has withdrawn 246,800 LINK from the exchange Binance within four days. At Tuesday afternoon's price that is around $3.06 million. Chainlink was quoted at $12.38 or 11.01 euros at about 16:51 German time on October 20, putting it 2.77 percent above the previous day's level, according to market data from CoinGecko.
What is interesting here is less the sum than the direction. Tokens that move from an exchange to a private address are no longer available for a quick sale. What this transaction really tells us, where its limits lie, and what it triggers for you in tax terms if you take the same step, follows in the sections below.
246,800 LINK leave Binance: the numbers behind the transfer
The industry outlet Tokenpost recorded the move on October 19. According to that account, a total of 246,800 LINK went from Binance to the same recipient address over four days. The bulk of it, around 182,160 LINK worth roughly $2.18 million, arrived in the 24 hours before 03:34 UTC on October 19. The most recent single entry came to 67,560 LINK, around $808,400 at the time. The list of transactions names neither a recipient nor a reason.
Put the sum in context before judging it. LINK's daily turnover across all recorded venues stands at $239.7 million. The $3.06 million of the transfer accounts for 1.27 percent of that. Measured against a circulating supply of 766,849,970 LINK, it is 0.032 percent. A move, then, that stands out because it runs in a bundle to one address, and not one that upends an order book.
What an exchange outflow says about available supply
An exchange outflow is an entry from an address belonging to the exchange to an address a customer controls. As long as tokens sit in an exchange account, they can be sold within seconds. Once they sit on an address of your own, the owner has to send them back first, and that costs time and fees. Analysts read from this that such holdings do not act as selling pressure in the short term.
The reading has a well-known weakness, and it belongs in the picture. An address outside an exchange need not be a private individual. It can be a custodian working for clients, a fund reshuffling holdings, or a second exchange with no publicly known address. Without attribution, the interpretation remains a probability, not a finding. Anyone turning a single transfer into a buy signal is confusing statistics with news.
The price since October 18: from $11.76 to $12.38
On October 18, LINK stood at $11.76, when Chainlink announced its collaboration with the Japanese consultancy Pacific Meta. We described the move at the time in our piece on ACE and the Japanese market. Since then the price has gained 5.3 percent. Tuesday's daily low was $11.84, and the current level sits 4.56 percent above it.
Chainlink's market value therefore comes to $9.50 billion. The price remains 76.5 percent away from its all-time high of $52.70 set in 2021. In the daily comparison, it is notable that LINK is gaining more than the broader market: Bitcoin manages 0.94 percent over the same period, LINK 2.77 percent, almost three times as much.

Outflow against reserve: 61,700 LINK a day against 14,397
A number takes on meaning through the number beside it. The Chainlink Reserve, into which the project converts revenue from its services, bought 431,900 LINK over 30 days, according to the figures we analysed on October 16 in our piece on the reserve's purchases. That is 14,397 LINK a day.
The one address withdrew 246,800 LINK over four days, so 61,700 LINK a day. That pace is 4.3 times what the reserve takes in on a monthly average. The sum is smaller, the pace markedly higher. Both movements point the same way, namely away from the freely tradable supply, and both are too small on their own to explain the price.
The Bitwise CLNK fund: inflows and shrinking assets
Besides the blockchain there is a second vantage point, and it does not contradict the first reading but adds to it. Bitwise's exchange-traded Chainlink fund recorded around $10 million in net inflows within two trading days in mid-October, according to data from the analytics service SoSoValue cited by several specialist outlets. Over the same period its net assets fell from $249.41 million to $229.38 million.
That sounds contradictory at first and is not. A fund's assets are made up of the number of tokens held and their price. If units are added while the price falls more sharply, assets shrink despite inflows. The same sources put the fund's cumulative net inflows at around $179.61 million. Check figures like these with SoSoValue or the provider itself before reusing them: the numbers come from secondary reports, not from a regulatory filing.
Self-custody and the holding period: the tax effect of the transfer
If you take the same step and send LINK from an exchange to an address of your own, that is not a sale in Germany. A private disposal under section 23 of the German Income Tax Act requires that you swap the token for something else. A transfer between two addresses that both belong to you does not meet that test. The one-year holding period keeps running and does not start again.
What matters is documentation. The tax office later sees only an entry from A to B, not who owns B. So secure the transaction number, the date, the amount and the receiving address from the exchange's withdrawal record while you still have access. For the order of acquisitions, a wallet-by-wallet view applies, according to the position we analysed in our piece on FIFO across multiple exchanges. The more addresses you use, the more precise your evidence has to be.

Compare hardware wallets for your LINKLINK staking: 4.32 to 4.75 percent and a 28-day cooldown
If you hold LINK in self-custody anyway, the next question is staking. Chainlink runs a pool with limited capacity for it. The provider Everstake gives a pool size of 45 million LINK and an effective rate close to 4.32 percent a year in its guide to LINK staking. Coinbase lists 4.75 percent on its information page and notes that the figure is neither guaranteed nor endorsed by Coinbase itself. The range is therefore 4.32 to 4.75 percent, and both numbers are snapshots.
More important than the rate is the lock-up. According to Everstake, a cooldown of 28 days applies, followed by a seven-day window in which you can actually withdraw your tokens. Miss that window and the waiting period starts again. On top of that sits the risk of slashing in the event of certain price-feed disruptions. If you want to be able to sell at any time in a volatile market, a lock-up of 35 days is a poor fit. For an overview of the providers and their terms, see our staking platform comparison.
For tax, staking income in Germany counts as other income under section 22 number 3 of the Income Tax Act, valued at the market price at the time of receipt. An annual exemption limit of 256 euros applies to all other income combined. That limit is not an allowance: at 255 euros everything stays tax-free, and at 256 euros the entire amount becomes taxable. Do not confuse it with the 1,000-euro exemption limit that applies to gains from private disposals.
Levels above and below, and where they come from
Two levels can be justified on Tuesday, and both come from the trading of recent days rather than from a model. On the downside sits the daily low at $11.84. Below that lies the area around $11.76, the level of October 18. Break that and the next support coincides with the zone around $11.50, which comes from the previous week's trading range.
On the upside, the next hurdle is at $12.13, the price of October 15. Above that begins the area around $12.62, where LINK stood on October 8. Levels of this kind say nothing about where the price is heading. All that is evidenced is where trading actually took place over the past two weeks, and that is the only justification a level can carry without a price target from a named analyst.
Our view: a transfer is not a buy signal
In the view of this newsroom, this event carries less than the headline promises. Three numbers from this article argue for that: 1.27 percent of daily turnover, 0.032 percent of circulating supply, and one address with no known attribution. Against it stands the fact that the move ran in a bundle and over a short span, which points more to a change of custodian than to a private purchase.
More solid is the picture from both directions together. The reserve has been taking in tokens for weeks, the Bitwise fund is recording inflows, and now another package leaves the exchange. None of these points explains the price on its own. Together they show that the freely tradable supply is slowly getting smaller while the price sits 76.5 percent below its high. Whether anything more comes of it will be decided by demand, not supply, and demand cannot be read from this data.
LINK at $12.38: without a second large outflow it stays an isolated case
If you want to follow the withdrawal, do it in order. First: compare the devices before you move amounts that would hurt to lose. Our hardware wallet comparison shows which models support LINK as an ERC-20 token on the Ethereum blockchain and what they cost.
Second: send a small test amount, wait for the confirmation and check the receiving address in a block explorer before the rest follows. Third: save the exchange's withdrawal record as a file, not as a screenshot, and file it with your tax documents. If you then want to stake, weigh the 35-day lock-up against the return of a good four percent a year, and check the terms in our platform comparison.
