Zcash falls 7.4 percent ahead of block 3,543,405, the NU7 cut-off for old Sprout funds
Zcash lost 7.4 percent to $1,228.33 on October 30, 2026, making it the biggest loser in the top 25. The protocol deadline matters more than the price: with NU7 at block height 3,543,405, balances left in the old Sprout pool become unusable.

Zcash lost 7.4 percent within 24 hours on October 30, 2026, and is trading at $1,228. That makes ZEC the biggest loser among the 25 largest cryptocurrencies. The day's more important number is not on the price board, though: six days before the NU7 network upgrade activates at block height 3,543,405, balances in the old Sprout pool will become unusable. Anyone who still has ZEC there will no longer be able to reach it afterwards.
Taken together, this makes the day unusual for ZEC holders. The price slide is market noise and will pass. The protocol deadline will not pass, and it cannot be made up later.
Zcash at $1,228: the numbers behind the ZEC price on October 30
Zcash traded at $1,228.33 on October 30, 2026. The intraday high was $1,325.91 and the low $1,189.27. That puts 10.3 percent between high and low in a single day, and the price closed in the lower third of the range. The figures come from CoinGecko market data for October 30, 2026.
On a weekly view the picture is calmer than the day suggests: down 0.7 percent over seven days. Over 14 days ZEC is even up 7.6 percent, while over 30 days it is down 13.6 percent. The daily loss has mainly erased the gains of the past two weeks rather than breaking a longer trend.
With a market capitalisation of $20.88 billion, Zcash is the eleventh-largest cryptocurrency. There are 17,014,731 ZEC in circulation out of a maximum of 21 million. Trading volume over the past 24 hours was $1.34 billion, or about 6.4 percent of market capitalisation. A ratio of that size means the price is not moving on thin order books that day but amid brisk trading.
$1.55 billion in liquidations: the market backdrop to the ZEC slide
Zcash did not fall alone. Bitcoin dropped 5.2 percent to $76,575, Ether 4.2 percent to $2,234, BNB 6.2 percent and Solana 5.4 percent. The trigger was the security incident at Binance: the exchange put the affected holdings at around $6.3 billion, suspended withdrawals during the investigation and said it would cover customers' losses. crypto.news reported this on October 30.
Leverage added to the pressure. According to CoinGlass figures compiled by crypto.news, around $1.55 billion in leveraged positions were forcibly closed within 24 hours, about $1.34 billion of them on the long side. 246,482 accounts were affected. Bitcoin accounted for around $499 million, Ether for $358 million, Solana for $82.6 million, XRP for $38.1 million and Dogecoin for $18.6 million.
Liquidation means that an exchange automatically closes a leveraged position as soon as the posted collateral no longer covers the losses. Because this involves selling, each wave amplifies the price slide that set it off. Open interest in crypto futures fell to about $136.3 billion according to the same compilation, while trading volume rose 74 percent.
Monetary policy was also in the background: the US Federal Reserve had left its policy rate at 3.75 to 4 percent, with two voting members in favour of a hike. That is not a Zcash-specific trigger, but it explains why the market had little cushion that day.

NU7 at block height 3,543,405: the switch to 25-second blocks
NU7 is Zcash's next network upgrade, a change to the consensus rules that all participants must adopt at the same time. It is set out in ZIP 259, the upgrade's deployment document. That document gives the mainnet activation height: block 3,543,405. On testnet it was block 4,465,026. The identifier of the new consensus branch is 0x77190AD9.
The most visible change concerns the blockchain's pace. The target interval between two blocks falls from 75 to 25 seconds, so a transfer gets its first confirmation three times faster on average. Because three times as many blocks are produced, NU7 at the same time introduces caps on the number of shielded operations per pool and per block, so that the verification load for nodes and wallet synchronisation does not grow with it.
There are also two changes on the monetary side. NU7 removes 60 percent of transaction fees from circulation. It also introduces the Network Sustainability Mechanism, NSM for short: a mechanism intended to keep the issuance of new ZEC stable across the halvings. According to ZIP 259, this does not raise the supply cap. The funds come from amounts that were previously removed from circulation in the same amount or left unclaimed by miners.
What NU7 explicitly does not do
NU7 brings no new transaction format. That is why the upgrade can arrive so quickly at all: wallet makers do not have to support new data structures. Version 5 and version 6 Zcash transactions remain valid. Only version 4 is dropped, and that is where the part that matters for holders lies.
Find a wallet for your ZEC before the upgradeSprout pool: version 4 transactions become invalid with NU7
The Sprout pool is Zcash's first shielded balance area, introduced in 2016. Shielded means that the amount and the parties are recorded on the blockchain in encrypted form. Sapling has been its successor since 2018, Orchard a third pool since 2022, and new balances have not gone into Sprout for years.
Even so, there is money there. And from block 3,543,405 nobody will be able to reach it. ZIP 259 gives the reason in a single sentence: transfers out of the Sprout pool can only be expressed as version 4 transactions, version 4 becomes invalid with NU7, so funds remaining in the Sprout pool become unusable. This is not a freeze that an operator can lift later. It is a consensus rule.
In practice this means that anyone holding ZEC in an old address beginning with zc must transfer the balance to a Sapling or Orchard address before activation. Sapling addresses begin with zs, Unified Addresses with u1. Transparent addresses beginning with t1 or t3 are not affected by the rule, as they do not use Sprout operations.
Whether you are affected at all depends on how long your balance has sat untouched. If you have moved your ZEC at some point in recent years or imported it into a current wallet, it is very likely in Sapling or Orchard. Typically affected are holdings from the early days, paper backups and wallets that have not been opened for years. An overview of programs that read all three pools and handle the move in one step can be found in our software wallet comparison.
When block 3,543,405 arrives: the calculation from block pace
An activation height is not a date. The block comes when it comes, and that depends on how fast miners compute. On October 30, 2026, the Zcash blockchain stood at height 3,536,200, according to network data from Blockchair. That left 7,205 blocks to the activation height.
In the 24 hours before, 1,136 blocks were produced. At that pace, the missing blocks will be reached in just over six days, around November 5 and 6. The target interval of 75 seconds per block gives the same range: 7,205 blocks times 75 seconds is 6.3 days. Both routes point to the same weekend. If the hashrate shifts significantly, the date shifts too, by hours in either direction.
ZIP 259 carries the status "Proposed" and is dated September 15, 2026. For holders this changes nothing about preparation: the activation height is in the document, and a transfer out of the Sprout pool costs nothing if the date ends up two days later.
A special case for operators of old nodes
Zcash's rules normally require outdated software to halt by itself before an activation. For NU7 this requirement has been suspended, as has the recommendation to allow around three months between the first supporting release and activation. ZIP 259 states the consequence explicitly: anyone running old software stays online through activation and then follows a pre-NU7 consensus branch. That is why the document calls for communications to urge users explicitly to update.
For you as a holder, this means that in the days around activation you should not rely on a single node or a single block explorer to tell you whether a transfer has arrived. Two independent sources showing the same block height are worth more than usual this week.
Monero at $594, Zcash at $1,228: the gap between the two privacy coins
October 30 separated the two big privacy coins unusually sharply. Monero lost only 1.2 percent to stand at $594.48, while Zcash lost 7.4 percent. On a weekly view the two are practically level: down 0.2 percent for Monero, down 0.7 percent for Zcash.
Market capitalisation explains part of this. Zcash comes to $20.88 billion, Monero to $11.19 billion. In 2026 Zcash is the coin that new money has flowed into, and such coins give up more on a sell-off day, because more fresh positions are under water and leveraged buyers are packed more densely there. Monero has not had these inflows and therefore also has less leverage that can be wiped out.
Drawing a conclusion about the technology of the two from this goes a step too far. On this day, what separates the two coins is their market positioning, not their cryptography.

Holding period and records: moving coins to your own wallet is not a sale
When you move funds out of the Sprout pool, the balance stays in your hands. A transfer between two of your own addresses is not a sale and does not trigger a taxable event in Germany. The one-year holding period under Section 23 of the German Income Tax Act keeps running, because it is tied to the acquisition date and not to the address.
Records are what matters. After a move, your holding shows a new address, and the original acquisition date is only in your own records. So save the transaction ID of the move, the date and both addresses before you close the old wallet. With shielded addresses this is particularly important, because a tax office cannot read the connections from the blockchain. We compare programs that keep such a history over years and evaluate it using the FIFO method under crypto tax software and portfolio trackers.
If you sell instead and buy back later, the holding period starts again. In a year with a 13.6 percent loss over 30 days, that is rarely the better route, and it is a decision about tax, not about the upgrade.
Compare exchanges that list ZEC with a MiCA licenceBuying with a MiCA licence: where ZEC can be traded by investors in Germany
Zcash can be reached in Germany through regulated trading venues, though less widely than Bitcoin or Ether. The reason lies in the obligations of the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation, MiCA for short: a provider needs authorisation and must be able to trace the origin of funds for every listed asset. This is more complex with shielded transfers, which is why some exchanges only allow transparent ZEC deposits and withdrawals or do not list it at all.
In practice this means three things for you. First, before a withdrawal, check whether your provider accepts shielded destination addresses at all, or whether you first have to withdraw to a transparent t1 address and move on from there. Second, expect wider spreads between bid and ask with ZEC than with the large coins, especially on a day with a 10 percent intraday range. Third, no current provider allows deposits into the Sprout pool any more, so the pool only matters for legacy holdings.
Which venues hold a MiCA licence is shown in the public register of the competent supervisor. Which assets an authorised provider lists is its own decision, and with ZEC that decision varies from firm to firm.
Levels above and below: $1,189, $1,325 and $1,400
On the downside, the October 30 low of $1,189.27 is the first level. If it holds, the daily loss remains a spike within the range of the past two weeks. If it breaks, the next reference point is the area around $1,100, where Zcash had already turned in mid-October.
On the upside, the intraday high of $1,325.91 is the level that frames the slide. Above it begins the zone in which ZEC turned lower several times in October. A round $1,400 appears in coverage as a target for November; that is the expectation of individual analyses and not an established figure, and we pass it on as such.
The date that matters this week, however, is not a price level. It is block 3,543,405. A network upgrade moves prices only indirectly, but it very directly decides whether your balance will still be reachable next week.
Zcash before NU7: block 3,543,405 decides the fate of old Sprout balances
- Open old holdings and identify the address type. If an address begins with
zc, the balance is in the Sprout pool and must move before activation. For custody afterwards, see the hardware wallet comparison. - Carry out the move to a Sapling or Unified address and let it confirm. Wait for a confirmation and check the block height against a second source. If your holding is on an exchange anyway, check there whether deposits and withdrawals will keep running through activation; we compare trading venues under crypto exchanges compared.
- Save the transaction ID, the date and both addresses. That way the acquisition date remains documented for the holding period, even after the old wallet is closed. Crypto tax software and portfolio trackers keep this entry permanently.
