Zcash Vote on the Halving: What the August 24 Cut-Off Meant for ZEC Holders
Recap as of September 27, 2026: Zcash had scheduled a coin holder vote from August 25, 2026 on whether to replace the halving with a smooth issuance curve. Only holders of shielded ZEC in the Ironwood pool at the August 24 cut-off were eligible. This article describes the situation before that date.

On August 25, 2026 a vote among coin holders begins at Zcash, and the most important of the five questions reads: should the halving be abolished and replaced by an issuance curve that tapers off evenly? Only holders of shielded, spendable ZEC in the Ironwood pool may take part, and only at a fixed moment: at mainnet block height 3,459,350, which the project source puts at roughly August 24, 2026 at 19:00 UTC. After that you may move the holdings again and the voting right remains. Voting itself runs until September 14, 2026, 19:00 UTC.
That is the whole core in four sentences. Everything else in this text explains what is actually up for decision, why the halving question reaches far beyond Zcash, how to check whether your balance is eligible at all, and where the matter stays unclear for holders at an exchange.
What Is Actually Being Decided in the Zcash NU7 Vote?
Zcash numbers its protocol changes. A network upgrade, NU for short, is a bundle of rule changes that takes effect together at a set block. NU7 is the next such upgrade, and its scope is what is now being voted on.
A coinholder vote is a vote in which the weight of a ballot depends on coins held rather than on heads: whoever demonstrably holds more ZEC carries more weight. According to the announcement thread in the official Zcash community forum, the round is organised by the Valar Group and Project Tachyon. Votes are recorded through a purpose-built Tokenholder Voting Chain, a separate blockchain that serves only to collect ballots and leaves the Zcash main chain untouched. The source names Vizor and Zodl as supporting wallets.
One point matters for context, and it is where many reports turn imprecise: this vote does not change the protocol by itself. What is being collected is an opinion poll among holders, which development is then meant to follow. What flows from it is covered in the section on binding force further down.
Abolishing the Zcash Halving: What the Network Sustainability Mechanism Changes
Zcash has the same ceiling as Bitcoin: 21 million coins, and there will never be more. Zcash also copies the road there to this day. The reward per block halves every 1,680,000 blocks, which corresponds to roughly four years. The block reward currently stands at 1.5625 ZEC. The next halving is set for block height 4,406,400 and is commonly expected in 2028.
The Network Sustainability Mechanism, NSM for short, is the proposal to give up precisely this staircase. Instead of jumping by half every four years, the issuance of new coins would follow a steady, slowly declining curve. The ceiling of 21 million remains untouched in the process; only the distribution over time changes. The corresponding Zcash Improvement Proposal carries the number ZIP 234 and explicitly cites the problem of the security budget as its reasoning: the fixed halving schedule provides no way of feeding funds removed from circulation back into issuance later, and once the planned issuance ends, securing the network rests on transaction fees alone.
The second ballot question hangs on this. Reissuance refers to returning collected transaction fees into future issuance. The options are an immediate start, a start in February 2027, a start in February 2031, or abstention.
Why this reaches beyond Zcash is plain enough. The halving is the best known monetary rule in the entire industry and the most searched single topic around Bitcoin in the German-speaking world. That a chain among the largest fifteen is openly putting its halving up for discussion carries a signal, regardless of how the vote turns out.

The Five Questions on the Zcash Ballot in Detail
The announcement thread lists five items for decision. They appear here in ballot order, with the answers available for each:
| Question | Subject | Options |
|---|---|---|
| Q1 | NSM issuance smoothing: a smooth issuance curve instead of halvings | smooth curve · keep halvings · defer the decision · abstain |
| Q2 | Starting point for the reissuance of transaction fees | immediately · February 2027 · February 2031 · abstain |
| Q3 | Shutting down the old Sprout pool by disabling v4 transactions | immediately · one year after the vote · never set a date · abstain |
| Q4 | Cutting the block time from 75 to 25 seconds, plus action limits per pool | yes · no |
| Q5 | Scope and maturity of NU7 if features are not ready by the end of September | ship anyway · postpone NU7 · reject the plan · abstain |
Two terms from this deserve an explanation of their own. Sprout is the oldest shielded pool at Zcash, the area in which amounts are held concealed; Q3 asks whether the old v4 transaction format attached to it will be switched off. And the block time is the interval at which the chain produces new blocks. Q4 would push it from 75 to 25 seconds, which makes payments look confirmed noticeably faster and in return produces more blocks per hour.
Quorum of 1,000,000 ZEC: When the Result Counts as Legitimate
A quorum is the minimum participation from which a voting result is treated as meaningful at all. The project source puts it this way: the result counts as legitimate and representative of coin holders if at least 1,000,000 ZEC take part in at least one question.
That figure can be placed in context without reading anything into it. According to CoinGecko data from August 22, 2026 at 06:38 UTC, around 16.89 million ZEC are in circulation. The hurdle therefore corresponds to just under 5.9 percent of the circulating supply, which has to take part actively and in shielded form. For a sense of scale: at the price level of the same moment, $783.97 per ZEC, that would arithmetically equal a voting weight of around $784 million. Whether the hurdle is cleared is open; there are no reliable advance figures on participation.
Who Can Vote? Shielded ZEC in the Ironwood Pool by Block 3,459,350
The condition for taking part is unusually strict and unambiguous in the wording of the project source: eligible to vote is whoever holds spendable shielded funds in Ironwood at mainnet block height 3,459,350. Translated and broken into its parts, that means three conditions which have to be met at the same time.
First, shielded. The balance has to sit in a shielded pool rather than on a transparent address. Second, spendable: the funds have to be available to spend on the cut-off date, meaning confirmed and not tied up in a pending transaction. Third, in the Ironwood pool, and that is the condition many older holdings do not meet automatically.
The snapshot is a cut-off image: at exactly this block height, a record is made of who holds how much. After that you may move your coins without losing the voting right. Anyone who reshuffles only after the cut-off date is no longer eligible, even though the vote itself runs for another three weeks.
Shielded or Transparent: The Difference Between the Zcash Pools
Zcash has two worlds. On a transparent address amounts behave as they do at Bitcoin: the amount sits openly in the chain and can be traced by anyone. In a shielded pool, by contrast, sender, recipient and amount are concealed; validity is demonstrated through zero-knowledge proofs, cryptographic evidence that confirms the correctness of a transaction without revealing its content.
Zcash has built several shielded pools over the years, and the current one is called Ironwood. It arrived with the network upgrade NU6.3, which went live on July 28, 2026 at block height 3,428,143. Ironwood replaced the previous main pool Orchard after a vulnerability was found in its proving circuit in May 2026 through which ZEC could arithmetically have been created without a public trace. We described the activation and the subsequent migration of balances at the time in our article on the Zcash surge around the Ironwood upgrade. For the vote this pool is the yardstick: anyone still holding ZEC in an older shielded pool or on a transparent address does not meet the condition as the source words it.
In practice this means: if you hold your own coins, you check in your wallet which pool your balance sits in. Which programs and devices display that cleanly at all differs widely, and privacy coins are a special case here, because by no means every application fully supports shielded addresses. Our comparison of crypto software wallets sets out how far each application goes. How important self-custody has become for this class of coin is also shown by the regulatory side, which we wrote up in the article on the delisting of privacy coins.

How Much Time Is Left Until the Snapshot on August 24, 2026?
The project source names roughly August 24, 2026 at 19:00 UTC as the moment. Because a block height is not a calendar day, we recalculated this ourselves instead of adopting the figure. On August 22, 2026 at 06:38 UTC the chain stood at block height 3,456,455 according to Blockchair. That leaves 2,895 blocks to the cut-off block 3,459,350. At the target block time of 75 seconds that comes to 217,125 seconds, or roughly 60 hours and 19 minutes. The cut-off date accordingly falls on August 24, 2026 at around 18:57 UTC and matches the source's figure to within a quarter of an hour.
One caveat belongs with this: 75 seconds is a target value, not a promise. If computing power in the network falls or rises sharply, the moment shifts by a few hours in one direction or the other. Anyone planning on the last hour is therefore planning too tightly.
What Happens to ZEC Held at an Exchange or a Broker?
This is where the solid ground ends, and that deserves to be said plainly rather than smoothed over. The project source describes only what makes a holding eligible: shielded, spendable balances in the Ironwood pool. On custody by third parties it says nothing about how custodians handle this, whether an exchange votes on behalf of its customers, or whether it intends to at all. The obvious conclusion that a balance on a trading venue is automatically left without a vote is plausible, yet unproven.
What you can do with that is concrete all the same. Ask your provider whether it will make a statement on the NU7 vote, and reckon with the possibility that none arrives. If taking part matters to you, the safe route runs through self-custody with a shielded Ironwood balance, and that route needs lead time: withdrawal, confirmation and possibly a change of pool cost time, which grows short before the cut-off date. Anyone considering this step anyway will find the hardware side in the hardware wallet comparison.
Crypto exchanges compared: check fees and custodyA Coinholder Vote Is Not Binding On-Chain Governance
On-chain governance describes a procedure in which a voting result changes protocol rules directly and without any further intermediate step. That is not the case here. The round collects an opinion poll among coin holders, fitted with a quorum. It is implemented only once development teams write the change, validators and miners run the corresponding software, and the result feeds into a network upgrade.
This is not a weakness of the procedure. It is how the procedure is built. Zcash works much like other chains whose changes ultimately depend on voluntary adoption by the operators. For you as a holder, one thing above all follows from it: a voting result from September 2026 is a signal of direction and not a switchover date. On today's schedule, the next halving is still around two years away.
What the Vote Means for the ZEC Price and What It Does Not
For context, the market picture, measured rather than estimated. According to CoinGecko data from August 22, 2026, ZEC trades at $783.97, or €671.24. That is around 31 percent more than 24 hours earlier and just under 60 percent more than seven days earlier. Market capitalisation stands at about $13.2 billion, which corresponds to rank 12. The all-time high of $3,191.93 dates from October 28, 2016, the coin's first day of trading.
How the vote will affect that cannot be forecast seriously, and two opposing readings sit side by side. The confident reading stresses that a plannable security budget makes the chain more stable in the long run and that the current attention on shielded balances ties up additional demand. The sceptical reading counters that the fixed halving schedule, comprehensible to everyone, is itself part of the value proposition, and that any softening of that promise costs trust even if the ceiling of 21 million stays untouched. Both arguments are opinions about the future rather than facts. If you want to follow the ongoing price development, you will find it on our ZEC price page.
What can be said with certainty is this: the cut-off date on August 24 is a date for an action, not a date for an event. Nothing automatic happens in the market at the snapshot.
Zcash Halving Vote: What to Take Away
- Check by August 24 where your ZEC actually sit. Only shielded, spendable balances in the Ironwood pool are eligible. Transparent addresses and older pools do not count as the source words it. Which application shows you that cleanly is settled by the comparison of crypto software wallets.
- If you want to hold your own coins, start now and not on the cut-off date. Withdrawal, confirmations and a possible change of pool need lead time, and the target block time of 75 seconds is only a guide value. The hardware side is set out in the hardware wallet comparison.
- If your ZEC sit with a provider, ask there actively. Whether and how a custodian handles the vote is documented nowhere. Anyone thinking about a switch on the occasion will find the terms in the crypto exchange comparison.
The two primary sources to read up on: the announcement thread on the NU7 coinholder vote in the Zcash community forum with block height, quorum and deadlines, and ZIP 234 on the Network Sustainability Mechanism with the reasoning behind the curve idea.
