Dogecoin: 96 percent of trading runs on Tether, 0.13 percent on the euro

Of the 100 highest-volume Dogecoin pairs, 96.00 percent run through Tether and 0.13 percent through the euro, measured on October 23, 2026. That exact trading pair loses its basis in the EU by January 8, 2027, and that shifts the question of where you buy DOGE next.

Here is what is documented: of the 1.38 billion dollars in daily turnover spread across the 100 highest-volume Dogecoin pairs on October 23, 2026, 96.00 percent trades against the stablecoin Tether and 0.13 percent against the euro. That is 1.82 million dollars in euro pairs, split between four venues. Our assessment follows further down: the euro market is thin, but it carries the order sizes retail investors actually deal in.

The number gains its weight from a deadline. On October 8, 2026, the European Securities and Markets Authority ESMA ruled that authorised providers in the EU should no longer offer services for stablecoins that lack authorisation under MiCA. Implementation runs on a three-month clock, so until January 8, 2027. Tether holds no authorisation as an e-money token in the EU. Anyone trading Dogecoin through a USDT pair is trading across a bridge that European providers are dismantling.

96 percent of DOGE trading runs through Tether

On Friday morning we went through the 100 highest-volume trading pairs for Dogecoin and sorted them by quote currency. The result is sharper than the price display in most apps would suggest.

Tether accounts for 1.32 billion dollars, or 96.00 percent. After that comes a long gap: the South Korean won at 1.17 percent, the US dollar as an actual currency at 1.01 percent, USD Coin at 0.72 percent, the Turkish lira at 0.29 percent. The euro sits at the bottom of the list with 0.13 percent, behind even the lira.

For a sense of scale: Tether reports 182.8 billion tokens in circulation, which makes it the largest stablecoin in the world. The issuer publishes those figures on its transparency page. In crypto trading, USDT is therefore not one payment option among many but the standard unit against which almost everything is quoted.

Only four euro pairs among the 100 largest trading venues

Exactly four of the 100 pairs are denominated in euros. Bitvavo leads with 553,917 dollars in daily turnover, Kraken follows with 503,205 dollars, Bit2Me with 493,141 dollars and Coinbase Exchange with 268,730 dollars. Together that comes to 1.82 million dollars.

These four venues quote DOGE between 0.071482 and 0.07149 euros. Kraken shows the current level on its Dogecoin price page. The gap between the four venues is less than a hundredth of a cent, so the euro market is small but not fragmented.

What matters for the interpretation is which way the number points. 0.13 percent does not mean you get a bad deal buying in euros. It means the depth of the market sits elsewhere, and that a large order in euros moves the price more than the same order in USDT.

The 96 percent is a range: one venue reports 56 percent of turnover

Taking a single figure from one data provider at face value would be careless here. The list includes CoinUp.io, a venue that on its own reports 770.6 million dollars. That is 56.0 percent of all recorded turnover, more than the remaining 99 pairs combined. The data provider has issued no trust rating for this venue.

So we ran both calculations. Counting CoinUp.io in, the Tether share comes to 96.00 percent and the euro share to 0.13 percent. Leaving the venue out, 605.5 million dollars of turnover remain, and the split shifts to 90.91 percent Tether and 0.30 percent euro.

The honest answer is therefore a range: between 90.9 and 96.0 percent of Dogecoin trading runs through Tether, between 0.13 and 0.30 percent through the euro. The range changes nothing about the conclusion, because in both calculations the euro share is smaller than a third of a percent.

The logarithmic scale was necessary because Tether and the euro differ by a factor of 700.

The spread at the four euro exchanges ranges from 0.0101 to 0.0700 percent

The spread is the gap between the best bid and the best ask in the order book. It is the price you pay for immediate access to the market, on top of the exchange fee.

At the four euro venues it sits far apart on October 23. Bit2Me reports 0.0101 percent, Kraken 0.0110 percent, Bitvavo 0.0112 percent and Coinbase Exchange 0.0700 percent. The most expensive venue is therefore about 6.4 times as expensive as the cheapest.

In euro terms that stays manageable: on a 1,000 euro purchase the spread costs roughly 11 cents at Kraken and roughly 70 cents at Coinbase Exchange. At most providers the exchange's trading fee sits several times higher. Anyone looking to cut costs therefore looks at the fee model first and only then at the spread. Which venues list DOGE in euros at all is set out in our overview of the best crypto exchanges.

The ESMA deadline of January 8, 2027 hits exactly this trading pair

MiCA is the European regulation on markets in crypto-assets. It requires stablecoins that track the value of an official currency to be authorised as e-money tokens. Tether does not hold that authorisation in the EU.

On October 8, 2026, ESMA went a step further and instructed national supervisors to press authorised providers for remedial action within three months of publication. That ends the transition period on January 8, 2027. The authority names no individual tokens in its guidance; it describes the category.

For you as a Dogecoin holder, one distinction matters here that often gets lost. The guidance is addressed to authorised service providers in the EU, not to you as a private individual. On ESMA's reading, selling, exchanging, transferring and withdrawing all remain possible. What falls away is the providers' offer to get you new holdings of the affected stablecoin. You will find an authorised exchange in the EU in our overview of regulated crypto exchanges.

Coinbase is already converting in the EEA on October 30, 2026

One provider is ahead of the deadline. In the European Economic Area, Coinbase will convert remaining balances in USDT, DAI and PYUSD into USD Coin on October 30, 2026. We wrote that up in detail on October 22, 2026 in our assessment of USDT or USDC, where the further dates are listed as well.

In practice that means: if you hold your DOGE trading balance there in Tether, it will sit in USD Coin after October 30. The dollar value stays broadly the same, but the conversion is a separate transaction that shows up in your transaction list.

Going through a stablecoin means two gates instead of one, and each one costs.

What the detour through Tether really costs when you buy

The difference between a euro pair and a USDT pair is not theoretical. Anyone who deposits in euros and buys through a USDT pair changes currency twice: once from euros into the stablecoin, once from the stablecoin into DOGE. Each of those steps has its own spread and often its own fee.

With a direct euro pair the first step falls away. In exchange, the order book is thinner. On an order of 1,000 euros that makes no difference, because it is tiny next to 1.82 million dollars of daily turnover. On an order of 50,000 euros the arithmetic looks different: there, the price slippage in a thin book can outweigh the saved conversion.

Where the line runs between the two cannot be drawn in general. It depends on how deep your exchange's order book is at the moment you buy. The reliable route runs through the order book itself: look at how much volume sits within 0.5 percent of the current price, and compare that with your intended order size.

DOGE in euro terms: 0.0715 euros and 58.98 percent below last year

At midday on Friday, Dogecoin is quoted at 0.080026 dollars and 0.071471 euros, up 1.02 percent on the previous day. The daily high was 0.08056 dollars, the daily low 0.078061 dollars. Market capitalisation stands at 12.52 billion dollars, which puts DOGE in 12th place. There are 156.43 billion tokens in circulation.

Over longer horizons the balance looks different. Over seven days there is a loss of 2.68 percent, over 30 days one of 19.87 percent, over one year one of 58.98 percent. The price is 89.06 percent away from its all-time high of 0.731578 dollars set on May 7, 2021.

The levels that count in the short term sit close together. On the upside it is the daily high at 0.08056 dollars, on the downside the daily low at 0.078061 dollars. As long as the price stays between those two points, the movement says little about direction. The day before, the market was still occupied with the bundling of the developer projects, which we assessed in our report on Dogecoin Labs. Little has happened to the price since; the move stayed within 2.5 percent.

Holding period and conversion: two separate events for the tax office

In Germany, gains from the sale of crypto-assets are tax-free after a holding period of one year, under section 23 of the Income Tax Act. Below one year, an exemption threshold of 1,000 euros per calendar year applies.

The point the stablecoin rebuild raises concerns the counting. Swapping one crypto-asset for another counts for tax purposes as a disposal of the first and an acquisition of the second. By that logic, a forced conversion from USDT into USD Coin is a disposal, even if the dollar value barely moves. The gain from it is usually tiny, but the event belongs in your records.

For your DOGE holdings themselves, nothing changes as a result. The holding period keeps running as long as you do not swap them. Anyone with many small events in their list is better served by a tool than by a spreadsheet; the selection is set out in our comparison of crypto tax software. Nothing stated about tax replaces advice on an individual case.

Our assessment: the euro market is thin, but it is enough

From the newsroom's point of view, the situation is less dramatic than the 0.13 percent sounds at first. Three documented points speak for that: the four euro venues quote within less than a hundredth of a cent of each other, their spreads range from 0.0101 to 0.0700 percent, and their combined daily turnover of 1.82 million dollars exceeds a typical retail order a thousandfold.

Against it stands the concentration. Four venues are few. If one of them drops out for European customers, say because it does not obtain its authorisation, the euro market loses a quarter of its depth at a stroke. And the range from 90.9 to 96.0 percent in the Tether share shows that even the data itself is not firm.

What follows from that is no reason to rush, but a reason to look. Anyone trading through a USDT pair today should know by January which euro pair their exchange lists and what it costs there. That is expressly not a recommendation to buy or sell Dogecoin.

Dogecoin in euros: there is time to switch until January 8, 2027

  1. Check in your exchange whether it lists a DOGE/EUR pair and what spread it shows for it. If it lists none, you will find a venue with a euro pair in the overview of the best crypto exchanges.
  2. By October 30, 2026, check whether you still hold balances in USDT with a provider in the European Economic Area, and decide whether to move them yourself or wait for the conversion. An authorised alternative is listed in our overview of regulated crypto exchanges.
  3. Enter any upcoming forced conversion in your tax records, even if the gain is close to zero. The tools for that are listed in the comparison of crypto tax software.
