Devcon 8 in Mumbai: What Ethereum's Big Conference Means for ETH

Devcon 8 opens on Tuesday, 3 November 2026, in Mumbai: until Friday, developers, researchers and companies from across Ethereum meet at the Jio World Centre in the Bandra Kurla Complex business district. It is the first time the Ethereum Foundation holds its flagship conference in India, as it announced on its blog. For ETH holders, three topics stand out: the open timeline for the Glamsterdam upgrade, the debate over future ETH issuance to stakers and the road to a quantum-secure Ethereum. Our analysis of the six Devcons since 2016 also shows that the conference itself has barely moved the price so far.

Devcon 8 in Mumbai: dates, venue and programme

Devcon is the global conference of the Ethereum community. It now takes place every two years in a different region, most recently in Bangkok in November 2024. The eighth edition runs for four days. According to the official Devcon 8 programme, 364 sessions are spread across nine tracks, from the core protocol, security and privacy to applications built with AI agents. Wednesday and Thursday are the busiest days with 120 and 124 entries.

Why India? The Ethereum Foundation points to more than 17 million developers on GitHub and to India having been the largest source of new crypto developers since 2023. It names ETHMumbai, Devfolio and Polygon as examples of the Indian ecosystem. On 4 November, Devfolio hosts ETHIndia, a one-day conference inside Devcon that includes a fireside chat with Vitalik Buterin. Anyone who stays in Mumbai after the conference can experience Diwali, the festival of lights, on 8 November.

A general admission ticket costs 499 dollars when paid in ETH and 999 dollars when paid in fiat currency. For residents of India, prices start at 149 dollars.

Devcon 8 and Glamsterdam: where the next Ethereum upgrade stands

Glamsterdam will not go live at Devcon. Core developers called off the activation on the Hoodi testnet that was scheduled for 26 October, as the Ethereum Foundation wrote on 22 October in its announcement of the delay. The reason is the open question of how the proposal EIP-8037 interacts with existing smart contracts on mainnet. A new date for Hoodi and mainnet is still pending. On the Sepolia testnet, the upgrade has been active since 6 October.

The contents of Glamsterdam are listed in the upgrade specification EIP-7773: 18 changes scheduled for inclusion. The most important are enshrined proposer-builder separation (ePBS, EIP-7732) and block-level access lists (EIP-7928), which make it easier for clients to process transactions in parallel. They come with smart contracts of up to 64 instead of 24 kilobytes and a log entry for every ETH transfer.

The open question is on the agenda twice on Wednesday. Ioannis Sachinoglou draws on audit work by the security firm ChainSecurity to show how the new gas accounting can trip up existing contracts: creating new storage gets more expensive, that cost can later be refunded, and a contract can draw the wrong conclusion from the gas it has left. Devcon and the ETH price: what the last six conferences show

Does Devcon move the price? We analysed CoinMarketCap daily closes around every Devcon since 2016, from the eve of the opening to the last day of the conference and to 30 days after the close. The result: during the conference days, Ether moved by less than two percent four times. Up to 30 days after the close, Ether lagged Bitcoin in five of six cases, although in 2024 only by half a percentage point.

The outliers are explained by the market, not the stage. After Cancún in 2017 both rose in the bull run, after Prague in 2018 both fell in the bear market. After Bogotá in 2022 Ether held up better because Bitcoin lost more in the collapse of the FTX exchange. In Bangkok in 2024, Justin Drake presented the Beam Chain, a redesign of the consensus layer, and Ether still fell 8.5 percent during the conference days. Betting on a Devcon rally means betting on a pattern that does not exist.

Ethereum after Glamsterdam: Hegotá, Lean Ethereum and quantum security at Devcon

In Mumbai, the focus reaches beyond Glamsterdam. For the following upgrade, Hegotá, named after the star Heze and the Devcon city of Bogotá, the upgrade specification EIP-8081 schedules two headline changes: inclusion lists (FOCIL, EIP-7805), which make it harder for individual block builders to censor transactions, and frame transactions (EIP-8141). These decouple accounts from today's key scheme, allow key rotation and open a path to quantum-secure signatures. Further out, researchers are working on Lean Ethereum, a leaner foundation designed to withstand quantum computers as well. The idea goes back to the Beam Chain that Justin Drake presented in Bangkok two years ago. On Wednesday Drake answers questions on quantum security, and on Thursday developers present leanSPHINCS, a signature scheme for that goal. Faster finality is also on the programme: today it can take up to 16 minutes for a block to become final, according to the programme, and two talks show the path to a few seconds.

What Devcon 8 could mean for the ETH price

Ether heads into the conference on the back foot. On 1 November at 23:36 UTC, one ETH cost 2,268 dollars according to CoinMarketCap, more than 15 percent less than 30 days earlier. The price sits between the 200-day average of about 2,160 dollars and the 50-day average of about 2,520 dollars. The lower line is the first support, the upper one the hurdle Ether would have to clear for a new uptrend.

Three signals from Devcon week could move the price. First, a new Hoodi date that brings Glamsterdam on mainnet within reach. Second, the issuance debate: the draft EIP-8363 would burn part of the staking rewards. Without a transition, the yield at a staking ratio of one third would fall from about 2.6 to about 1.2 percent, according to the draft. Fewer new ETH tighten supply, lower returns hit stakers and providers of staking products. How the providers compare today is shown in our comparison of staking platforms.
