CME lists Uniswap futures on October 19: why UNI is up 8.3 percent three days out

CME Group opens trading in futures on Uniswap on Monday, October 19. Three days ahead the UNI price stands at $7.49, well below the level it reached right after the announcement.

Uniswap is up 8.3 percent on October 16 and trades at $7.49. The reason sits in the calendar: on Monday, October 19, the derivatives exchange CME Group opens trading in futures on Uniswap. For the first time, the token gets a regulated futures contract at one of the largest derivatives venues in the world.

Nothing changes for now in the way you buy the token in Germany. What changes is the set of players able to take a position on the price: funds, asset managers and trading houses that may only touch a coin through a regulated derivatives product. How much of that reaches the price depends on volume in the first few weeks, not on the launch date itself.

CME lists Uniswap futures on October 19: 10,000 UNI per standard contract

CME Group announced the move on September 22. It is listing two contract sizes: the standard contract covers 10,000 UNI, the micro contract 1,000 UNI. Both trade on the CME Globex platform. The launch remains subject to regulatory review. A Bitcoin Cash contract starts the same day alongside Uniswap, sized at 250 BCH for the standard and 25 BCH for the micro contract.

A future is a binding agreement to settle an underlying asset at a price fixed today on a set date in the future. At the CME the coin itself is not delivered; the difference is settled in dollars. Buying a contract means holding no UNI and needing no wallet.

Convert the contract size into money once and the intended buyer becomes visible: at $7.49 a standard contract represents $74,900, a micro contract $7,490. This is not a product for a savings plan but a position size for professional accounts. That is precisely the point: the contract opens no new route for retail investors, it opens one for capital that stayed outside until now.

What a futures contract on a regulated exchange does differently

A derivatives exchange places itself between buyer and seller as the central counterparty and demands collateral from both sides. For institutional investors that is often the condition for taking part at all. A CME listing therefore counts in the industry as a signal reaching beyond the price of the day: it puts the token in the same product family as the Bitcoin and Ether futures that have traded there for years.

The barrier stays down until Monday: before October 19 there is no UNI contract at the CME.

The UNI price sits well below the level reached after the announcement

The gain of the day lands on a price far from its old marks. Uniswap moved between $6.84 and $7.62 over the past 24 hours, stands just 1.5 percent higher on the week and, with 624.8 million UNI in circulation, carries a market capitalisation of $4.68 billion. That is good for rank 25 among the largest crypto assets. Turnover came to $598.2 million in 24 hours. The price is 83.3 percent below its record of $44.92 from May 2021.

The comparison with the day of the announcement is the telling one. Trade publications quoted prices between $9.70 and $10.12 for September 22 and 23, after the listing became known. From that level UNI has given up between 23 and 26 percent, the range reflecting the differing figures in the sources. The market has handed back the advance from September before the contract even starts.

For context, today's rise recovers part of that distance. It does not carry the price into new territory.

Futures, perpetuals and the funding rate: the three terms that matter now

The CME contract is not the first derivatives product on UNI. Crypto exchanges have run so-called perpetuals for years, and they work differently from the contract starting on Monday.

A perpetual is a futures contract without an expiry date. Because there is no date on which contract and spot price must meet, it needs a mechanism to hold the two together. That mechanism is the funding rate.

The funding rate is a regular payment between the holders of long and short positions. When it is positive, buyers pay sellers; when it is negative, the payment runs the other way. It is not an exchange fee but a transfer between market participants. The more one side dominates, the more expensive its position becomes. How these costs add up is something we work through for the common platforms in our perp DEX comparison.

Funding rates at six exchanges: our own survey from October 16

Whether the market is overheating ahead of the launch can be measured. We used the publicly available figures from the six venues OKX, Hyperliquid, Gate.io, KuCoin, MEXC and Bitget, each for the UNI perpetual against the US dollar. Six markets were checked. cryptoticker.io collected this data itself on October 16, 2026.

The result is calmer than the gain of the day suggests. The funding rate is positive at all six venues, so the buy side is paying. The level, though, stays within the ordinary range: OKX, KuCoin and Bitget sit at 0.0100 percent per eight-hour period, MEXC at 0.0096 percent, Gate.io at 0.0034 percent. Hyperliquid settles hourly and comes in at 0.0013 percent. Annualised, that works out at between 3.7 percent at Gate.io and 11.0 percent at the top end.

The 0.0100 percent per eight hours is remarkably unremarkable: at these venues it matches the stored base rate exactly. At OKX the premium of the contract over the spot price is even slightly negative, so the perpetual trades a fraction below spot there. These numbers show no sign of a buy side crowding in ahead of the launch and paying up for it.

Open positions of $185 million sit across five venues

Open interest is the value of all derivatives positions currently running and not yet closed. It shows how much capital is at work in a market. Five of the six exchanges checked report the figure; Gate.io does not for this market. The five add up to $185.6 million.

The breakdown: Hyperliquid leads with $70.6 million, followed by OKX with $43.0 million, MEXC with $34.4 million, Bitget with $29.8 million and KuCoin with $7.8 million. Two other large venues could not be included in this survey. The total is therefore a floor and not a market-wide figure.

Set the $185.6 million next to daily turnover of $598.2 million and a market capitalisation of $4.68 billion and the picture falls into place: a derivatives market on UNI exists, but it is small against the spot market. A single large contract at the CME stands out in that arrangement.

Why a CME futures contract reaches the spot market at all

Futures contracts act on the price through two routes. The first is hedging: anyone holding UNI who wants to cap the risk can in future sell on a regulated exchange instead of parting with the coins. That can take selling pressure off the spot market. The second route is arbitrage. When the futures price diverges from spot, traders buy the cheaper side and sell the dearer one. This mechanism links the two markets and can amplify moves.

Both require volume. A contract that almost nobody trades moves nothing. The figures from the first weeks of trading therefore say more than the launch day.

Buying in Germany: regulated exchanges and custody of your UNI

As a retail investor in Germany you will not usually trade the CME contract. It is aimed at professional market participants, and the contract sizes speak for themselves. Anyone who wants exposure to Uniswap keeps buying the token on the spot market.

Under the European crypto regulation MiCA, providers that trade or hold crypto assets for clients in the EU need authorisation. Before you buy, check whether your provider holds that authorisation for Germany and how it keeps the coins. The difference counts when things go wrong: if the UNI sit in the account of the exchange, you carry its default risk. If they sit in your own wallet, responsibility for the keys is yours.

Holding period for spot UNI, different rules for derivatives

For tax purposes, spot holdings and derivatives trades run separately in Germany. If you sell UNI held as a private individual, the rule for private disposals with its one-year period applies. Derivatives, by contrast, fall under investment income; the relevant provision is section 20 of the German Income Tax Act. There is no holding period after which gains become tax-free.

In practice, a year of patience on a spot holding and derivatives trading through an exchange lead to very different outcomes on the tax return. We wrote up how futures and perpetuals are treated in detail on October 12, 2026 in our piece on the taxation of crypto futures. Get tax advice if in doubt; this text does not replace it.

Leverage and liquidation: what the funding rate costs a long position

A liquidation is the forced closure of a leveraged position once the collateral posted no longer covers the losses. It happens without warning, and with thin collateral a move barely visible on the daily chart is enough.

The funding rates measured put the running costs in concrete terms. At 0.0100 percent per eight hours a long position pays around 0.03 percent a day, roughly 11 percent a year. That sounds small but applies to the whole position value, not to your stake. At five times leverage this payment eats a good 55 percent of the capital you put up each year before the price has moved at all. A position waiting for the launch on Monday pays that rent every day.

The range of 3.7 to 11.0 percent a year also shows that the choice of venue costs or saves money here. Anyone working with leverage compares funding rates before picking a platform.

Levels above and below: $7.62 and $6.84

The two points at which the price turned over the past 24 hours are $7.62 on the upside and $6.84 on the downside. If UNI holds above the high of the day, the next orientation lies in the zone the price came back from after the announcement, between $9.70 and $10.12. If it falls below the low of the day, today's rise has been worked off.

One note on expectations: the launch of a futures contract says nothing about direction. After earlier listings the start was often followed by a phase in which the advance from the announcement was unwound. That only becomes reliable once volume figures from the first weeks are in.

Uniswap futures: from Monday the volume counts, not the announcement

Three things are concrete now:

  1. Settle the buying route. If you want to buy UNI on the spot market, check the authorisation, fees and custody model of your provider. An ordered overview is in our crypto exchange comparison.
  2. Decide on custody. Choose whether the coins stay on the exchange or move to your own wallet. The differences between the devices are in the hardware wallet comparison.
  3. Document the purchase date. Keep receipts and dates so the one-year period can be evidenced on sale. The tools in the overview of tax software and portfolio trackers help with that.

The key points on the launch

CME Group opens trading in Uniswap futures on October 19, with 10,000 UNI in the standard contract and 1,000 UNI in the micro contract. UNI trades at $7.49, 8.3 percent above the previous day but 23 to 26 percent below the level on the day of the announcement. Our own survey across six venues shows funding rates at base level and open positions of $185.6 million at five of them: the derivatives market is heading into the launch date without visible excess. What matters will be how much actually trades at the CME. The source for the listing is the announcement by CME Group of September 22, 2026.
