Strategy pauses its Bitcoin buying: $204.9 million into its own shares
Strategy bought no Bitcoin at all in the week of October 19 to 25, 2026 and put $204.9 million into repurchasing its own STRC preferred shares instead. The stack stays at 848,517 Bitcoin, while free cash fell by about 46 percent.

Here is what the filing shows: the largest corporate holder of Bitcoin bought no Bitcoin at all in the week of October 19 to 25, 2026. Instead, $204.9 million went into the repurchase of 2.07 million of its own STRC preferred shares, paid out of cash on hand. Our own reading follows further down: Strategy is tidying up its dividend burden rather than growing the stack.
The short answer to the question every holder is asking: nothing was sold. The stack still stands at 848,517 Bitcoin. Only the buying has stopped, and so far only for one week. The company reports these figures every Monday in a mandatory filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, the 8-K. The filing dated October 26, 2026 is the source for every number in this article.
What Strategy reported for the week of October 19 to 25, 2026
Three items sit at the heart of the filing. First, no Bitcoin transaction, neither a purchase nor a sale. Second, no share sales through the running at-the-market programme, the mechanism the company uses to issue new stock continuously on the exchange. Third, $204.9 million for the repurchase of 2.07 million STRC preferred shares.
That ends a run of weeks in which the company added to the stack every time. How long that run actually was depends on who is counting: one reading puts it at five consecutive weeks, another at three. Both refer to the same mandatory filing and differ only because some of those weeks brought token amounts. We give the range rather than smooth it over.
A pause in buying is nothing new at Strategy. The company has reported weeks without a purchase several times before, and after one longer pause it even sold. What is new is the scale of what happened instead.
848,517 Bitcoin at an average cost of $75,446: the stack in numbers
Strategy's Bitcoin holdings stand at 848,517 coins. The average purchase price is $75,446 per Bitcoin, the total cost basis $64.02 billion. Both figures are stated in the filing.
Measure that against the current price and the picture becomes concrete. Bitcoin trades at roughly $80,060 on October 26, 2026. The stack is therefore worth about $67.9 billion, leaving a paper gain of just under $3.9 billion. That sounds like a lot, but against the cost basis it is a cushion of barely six percent. Below $75,446, the entire position sits under water.
For a sense of scale: 848,517 Bitcoin is a little over four percent of all 21 million Bitcoin that will ever exist. No other listed company holds anything close.
USD cash falls 46 percent to $242.4 million
The most striking number of the week is not in the Bitcoin line but in the cash. The USD cash position fell from $447.3 million to $242.4 million, a drop of about 46 percent. The difference matches almost exactly the $204.9 million that went into the share repurchase.
That is separate from the second pot of money, the USD reserve. This position stood unchanged at $4.83 billion as of October 25, 2026. According to the company, the reserve exists to service the dividends on the preferred shares and the interest on the bonds. It was left untouched by the buyback.
The distinction matters because it shows where the money came from. Strategy used its free cash and left the reserve alone. Readers following the coming weeks should therefore track the two positions separately.

STRC: the preferred share paying a 12 percent annual dividend
STRC is the ticker for the Variable Rate Series A Perpetual Stretch Preferred Stock, a preferred share with no maturity date. Preferred means the holders receive a fixed payout ahead of ordinary shareholders, but have no voting rights and no share in any gain in the company's stock.
The rate is not fixed; the company sets it afresh every month. For October 2026 it stayed at 12.00 percent a year, the fourth month in a row. Payment is semi-monthly, at 50 cents per share. Management has said it will keep recommending that rate to the board until STRC trades steadily near $100 per share.
This is precisely where the economic logic of the buyback lies. Every STRC share taken off the market costs the company no further twelve percent dividend. At 50 cents semi-monthly, 2.07 million shares amount to roughly $24.8 million less in annual payouts. A repurchase below the issue price also lightens the load on the balance sheet.
Compare exchanges to buy your first BitcoinThe ATM machine: how issued shares turned into Bitcoin
To see why a single week without a purchase is news at all, it helps to look at the mechanism behind it. Strategy buys Bitcoin almost entirely out of fresh capital, hardly ever out of operating income. The company issues new common or preferred shares and swaps the proceeds for Bitcoin. That continuous issuance through the exchange is called an at-the-market programme, or ATM.
mNAV, the premium on the Bitcoin stack
Whether that works out for existing shareholders hangs on a single metric. mNAV, short for market net asset value, sets the company's market capitalisation against the value of its Bitcoin holdings. Above one, the market pays more than a dollar for every dollar of Bitcoin on the balance sheet. Each new share then brings in more Bitcoin per existing share, and issuing pays off.
Below one, the arithmetic reverses. New shares then dilute the Bitcoin per existing share instead of raising it. Management that keeps issuing in that situation is working against its own shareholders. The premium on the stack is the switch the whole machine runs on.
Why a buyback is the opposite of an issuance
A repurchase turns the process around. Rather than swapping paper for money and buying Bitcoin with it, the company swaps money for its own paper and takes it off the market. The Bitcoin stack stays where it is, while the number of preferred shares outstanding falls. Arithmetically, the Bitcoin per remaining share rises without a single Bitcoin being added.
That is why this filing is more than a footnote. The numbers show that the capital cycle of the largest corporate holder is currently running the other way.
October 2026 compared: $664 million in buybacks against $72.3 million in Bitcoin
A single week could be an outlier. The full month is not. Since the start of October, Strategy has spent roughly $664 million repurchasing STRC preferred shares and $72.3 million buying 851 Bitcoin. For every dollar that went into Bitcoin, a good nine dollars went into its own paper.
There is a precursor in September 2026: in a single week the company bought back $176 million of STRC shares and widened its programme for repurchasing digital credit instruments from one billion to two billion dollars. The direction, in other words, is older than this one week; only the pace has picked up.
Anyone tracking this further will find the figures in the same mandatory filing every week. Two measures are worth watching: whether the ATM programme restarts, and whether the buyback is paid out of free cash or out of the reserve.

MSCI drops Strategy from its indices on November 30, 2026
The buying pause falls in a week in which a second pressure point moves closer. According to our analysis of October 16, 2026, index provider MSCI decided on October 15 to remove companies without meaningful operating businesses from its Global Investable Market Indexes. Strategy was on the preliminary list.
Two dates are fixed: MSCI publishes the final removal list on November 11, 2026, and the change takes effect at the close of trading on November 30, 2026. Funds tracking an MSCI index will no longer need to hold the stock. An index exclusion is not a delisting, though: the shares stay listed and tradable.
Strategy itself puts the share of its stock held by funds tracking MSCI indices at roughly three to four percent. That is the company's own estimate, not MSCI's. What matters for the buying pause is the link behind it: the harder fresh capital is to raise, the less often the ATM machine tops up the Bitcoin stack.
Compare brokers for stocks and cryptoThe demand share: 851 Bitcoin is a thousandth of the company's own stack
How much demand actually drops out of the market? October's 851 Bitcoin amount to roughly one thousandth of the 848,517 coins held. Set against the months in which Strategy took in five-figure amounts, that is already a very small number.
A single week's pause therefore moves no price. Its weight lies elsewhere: the pause is a signal of how expensive fresh capital currently is for Bitcoin treasury companies. As long as a company pays twelve percent in dividends and weights the repurchase of that paper above buying more Bitcoin, conditions in the capital market are tighter than in the spot market.
For the Bitcoin price itself, the same holds as for any single address: a holder who does not sell puts no supply on the market. The 848,517 Bitcoin stay locked up for as long as they stay locked up.
Our reading: the dividend burden comes before the stack
Our assessment: Strategy is currently prioritising the upkeep of its capital structure. The evidence sits in this month's numbers. $664 million went into repurchasing paper carrying a twelve percent annual dividend, $72.3 million into Bitcoin. Free cash shrank by 46 percent, while the reserve for dividends and interest stayed untouched at $4.83 billion. Add to that management's explicit recommendation to hold the rate at twelve percent until STRC trades near $100.
Against that reading stands the fact that one week is not a turning point and that the company has ended earlier pauses again and again. The question will only be settled by the coming Monday filings. If the ATM programme restarts and four-figure purchase volumes reappear, this month was an interlude. If the nine-to-one ratio holds, the business model has effectively shifted. None of this is a recommendation to buy or sell; shares in Bitcoin treasury companies can lose their value entirely.
Buying route, holding period and custody: the points that touch Germany
For investors in Germany, this filing carries no deadline and no obligation. It is a good occasion, though, to run through three points that mark the difference between a corporate stack and a private one.
Buying through a MiCA-regulated exchange
Holding Bitcoin directly needs no detour through a share and carries no corporate risk. Under the EU's MiCA regulation, crypto service providers in Germany may only operate with a licence; the competent authority is BaFin. Which firms are licensed and what trading costs there are set out in our overview of crypto exchanges. The licence itself can be looked up in BaFin's register and in the ESMA register.
The holding period under Section 23 of the German Income Tax Act
The second difference is tax. A company like Strategy carries its stack on the balance sheet, while a private holder in Germany falls under the rules for private disposals. Hold Bitcoin for more than a year and the gain is then tax-free on sale. The clock runs separately for each purchase, which is why the date of every single tranche counts. Document the purchase date, amount and price from the start, not in the following year.
Custody in your own hands
The third point is control. A stack on an exchange is a claim against the firm; a stack in your own wallet is possession. Holders of larger amounts therefore separate trading balances from long-term holdings. The seed phrase belongs offline and in two different places, never in a cloud or a photo.
Strategy's buying pause: without new shares, the Bitcoin supply line runs dry
The week of October 19 to 25, 2026 was the first in weeks without a single Bitcoin bought, and it cost $204.9 million out of free cash. Three steps follow from that:
- Separate the corporate risk from the Bitcoin risk. A share in a Bitcoin treasury company also hangs on its dividend burden, its index membership and its access to capital. Anyone who only wants the price exposure does not need that structure. Routes and costs for trading shares and crypto are set out in our broker overview.
- Settle custody before the stack grows. Decide which part stays on the exchange and which part moves into your own wallet. The devices and how they differ are in the hardware wallet overview.
- Document the holding period for every tranche. Note the date, amount and price of each purchase so the one-year period can be proved. Tools that track this automatically are listed in our overview of tax tools and portfolio trackers.
The next fixed date in this matter is November 11, 2026, when MSCI publishes its final removal list. The next mandatory filing on the stack comes, as every week, on Monday.
