Zcash in October 2026: The Standout Against the Trend
Zcash is the exceptional story of the year: ZEC traded at around $1,356 on October 21, 2026, some 170 percent above its level 90 days earlier, largely decoupled from the broader market. The driver is the privacy renaissance: growing demand for confidential transactions (shielded pools), prominent advocates, and a scarce, Bitcoin-like supply model (21 million coins, halvings).
After the rally: opportunity or trap?
Parabolic surges are rarely extrapolated in a straight line. The decisive question is whether the privacy narrative turns into durable usage, or whether ZEC gives back much of its gains, as it has in previous cycles.

What is Zcash (ZEC)? The privacy coin explained
Zcash is a cryptocurrency in which the sender, recipient and amount of a payment can be kept hidden on request; ZEC is its coin. The network launched on 28 October 2016 and is based on the Zerocash research project by cryptographers from Johns Hopkins University, MIT, the Technion and Tel Aviv University. It was originally developed by the Electric Coin Company led by Zooko Wilcox-O’Hearn.
This is made possible by zero-knowledge proofs known as zk-SNARKs: the network checks that a payment is valid without seeing the amounts or the parties. Users who prefer can also pay transparently, in which case addresses and amounts are public, as with Bitcoin. New ZEC are created through mining with the Equihash algorithm, and a block is added roughly every 75 seconds.
What is the Ironwood pool?
Shielded balances sit in pools whose technology Zcash has renewed several times: Sprout since 2016, Sapling since 2018, Orchard since 2022. On 28 July 2026 the Ironwood upgrade added a new pool after a vulnerability had been found in Orchard; according to the developers, there was no sign that any funds were affected. Anyone moving ZEC from Orchard to Ironwood passes a counting point where the amount is recorded openly. This makes it possible to prove that the total supply is correct.
How many ZEC are there?
As with Bitcoin, the supply is capped at 21 million ZEC. About 17.01 million are in circulation, just over 81 percent (as of 27 October 2026). The reward per block halves roughly every four years, most recently in November 2024. In a vote that ended on 14 September 2026, holders backed keeping the halvings by about 99 percent, and just as clearly backed 25-second blocks with the next upgrade, NU7.
Where can you buy Zcash?
ZEC is listed on many major crypto exchanges, in the EU also on providers licensed under MiCA. From 10 July 2027, the EU’s new anti-money-laundering regulation bars providers in the EU from keeping accounts that allow transactions to be anonymised; owning ZEC remains legal. Which exchanges are available and what they charge is shown in our crypto exchange comparison; how to store coins safely afterwards is explained in our guide how to store crypto.

What actually moves the Zcash price
Zcash shares Bitcoin’s supply mechanics (21 million coins, a halving cycle) but adds shielded transactions on top: amounts and participants can be cryptographically concealed. That makes Zcash both the best-known privacy coin and the most politically exposed one. Both traits drive the price more than any technical metric.
2026 is the year it is paying off: Zcash has more than doubled since the start of the year and had risen roughly fivefold over twelve months by October 21. After a monthly high of almost $590 in July, ZEC briefly reached around $1,290 on September 9 and around $1,680 on September 26. The drivers were growing activity in the shielded pool, the Ironwood hard fork in late July, and the conversion of Grayscale’s Zcash trust into a spot ETF, which has traded on NYSE Arca since August 25, 2026 as the first US spot ETF on a privacy coin.
The metrics we watch for Zcash
- Share of supply in the shielded pool: The only metric that measures genuine demand for the privacy feature rather than pure speculation.
- Regulatory decisions: Russia banned professional handling of Zcash on July 20, 2026. Delistings by exchanges are the most concrete downside risk.
- Flows into the Zcash ETFs: The Grayscale Zcash ETF has traded in the US since August 25, 2026; its flows show whether institutional money is coming in or leaving, and a further spot ETF from Winklevoss has been pending since October 6.
- Implementation of protocol upgrades: Ironwood closes a vulnerable pool and enables public auditing of the total supply, a transparency argument that sets Zcash apart from other privacy coins.
Why Zcash is hard to model
A fivefold increase within a year cannot be extrapolated. We therefore treat 2026 as an exceptional year and expect markedly flatter curves for the years that follow. Anyone who sees price targets extending 2026’s pace should scrutinise their assumptions.
Where this forecast could go wrong
Privacy coins sit at the centre of anti-money-laundering regulation. A coordinated wave of delistings in the EU or the US would immediately restrict tradeability, a risk no price model can capture. Conversely, the spot ETF trading since August 25, 2026 opens the asset to an investor group that could hardly buy it before; further approvals, such as for the pending Winklevoss fund, would widen that circle.
