How to read the chart

The ranking shows how unevenly the crypto market is distributed: even the tenth coin is usually only a fraction of the size of Bitcoin. The 24-hour change reveals whether the market moves as a block or whether individual large coins break ranks, for example after news about their project.

The top places also include stablecoins such as Tether and USD Coin. Their price is pegged to the dollar, their market capitalisation grows with the amount issued and not with the price. The values are fetched again from CoinMarketCap every five minutes.

How this number is produced

The ten cryptocurrencies with the largest market capitalisation, with their 24-hour change alongside. Based on CoinMarketCap quotes in US dollars.

What it does not say

Market capitalisation is size, not quality, and not liquidity either: a token can be highly valued and barely tradable. Stablecoins appear in this list even though their value stands still by design.

Frequently asked questions

Which cryptocurrency has the largest market capitalisation?

Bitcoin, by a wide margin. It is usually followed by Ethereum and the largest stablecoins. The order from third place onwards changes more often, the chart shows the state at the last fetch. Market capitalisation is price times circulating supply, both in US dollars from CoinMarketCap.

Why are stablecoins in the list of the largest cryptocurrencies?

Stablecoins are cryptocurrencies like any other, only their price is pegged to the dollar. Because very many of them are in circulation, they reach a market capitalisation above that of many well-known coins. Their 24-hour change is close to zero, which is intended and not a measurement error.

How is the circulating supply determined?

CoinMarketCap estimates it for each coin itself. Locked holdings of founders, foundations or investors are excluded depending on the coin, lost coins are included, because nobody knows which ones are gone for good. Market capitalisation is therefore a good approximation, but not an exact figure.
