NEAR opens cross margin for 50 Hyperliquid perp markets at up to 40 times leverage
NEAR released a cross-margin mode for its Hyperliquid perps on October 22, 2026: more than 50 markets, leverage up to 40 times, collateral at account level instead of per position. The price falls 9.9 percent the same day, and in the backstop procedure cross margin puts the whole account on the line.

NEAR released a cross-margin mode on its perpetuals interface on October 22, 2026. Collateral no longer sits with each position separately but as a shared balance at account level. The announcement puts it this way: "Positions now share your perps balance as margin instead of each holding its own". According to the product page, more than 50 perpetual markets are on offer with leverage of up to 40 times, settled technically through Hyperliquid.
The timing is what makes this relevant to you. NEAR trades at $4.44 on CoinGecko data, down 9.9 percent within a day and 12.8 percent over the week. Among the twenty largest cryptocurrencies excluding stablecoins, that is the weakest performance this Friday. Access to leverage becomes more convenient, in other words, at the very moment the price is swinging hardest.
What NEAR changed about the perps on October 22
Until the switch, the interface worked in isolated mode. Each position was assigned its own pot of collateral, and it could lose no more than that pot. Holding four positions meant managing four separate buffers and topping up each one individually.
In cross mode there is only one pot. All open positions draw on the same balance. A gain in one position can support the collateral of another before it is realised. According to the documentation of Hyperliquid, which provides the settlement, unrealised profit from cross positions can even serve as initial margin for a new trade.
This netting runs both ways. A loss in a single position eats into the balance that is supposed to carry all the others. That is the difference the marketing copy glosses over.
Cross margin and isolated margin: the difference in one sentence
Cross margin means collateral that covers several positions jointly. Isolated margin means collateral tied firmly to a single position, liable only for that one.
In practice: cross margin uses your capital more efficiently, because positions cushion each other and you have to top up less often. Isolated margin limits the damage, because one bad call leaves the rest of the account untouched. Which mode suits you depends on whether you deliberately run several positions as one portfolio or take bets that are independent of each other.
A perpetual future, or perp, is a futures contract with no expiry date. It tracks a price without you owning the cryptocurrency itself, and it is tied to the spot price through a running settlement payment called funding. To hold actual coins instead, you need an exchange rather than a derivative.
40 times leverage on more than 50 perp markets, and what the number means
Leverage of 40 times means $1,000 of collateral carries a position worth $40,000. The arithmetic behind it is unforgiving: a 2.5 percent move against you wipes out the collateral deployed. With NEAR's daily range between $4.43 and $4.97, a move of that size fits inside a few hours.
Hyperliquid checks the chosen leverage when the position is opened. After that the watching is up to you, and the maximum permitted leverage differs by market. The 40 is an upper limit for individual markets, not a promise for all 50.
How NEAR's interface compares with other platforms for perpetual trading can be read in our overview of the best perp DEXs, where fees, leverage limits and authorisation status sit side by side.

Compare the leading perp DEXsHow Hyperliquid liquidates: order book, two thirds, liquidator vault
Forced liquidation follows a fixed sequence according to Hyperliquid's documentation. What counts is the account's equity, that is the balance plus unrealised profit or loss, measured against the maintenance margin required.
If equity falls below that maintenance margin, the exchange first tries to close positions through its own order book. If that works and the proceeds are enough to meet the requirement again, the remaining collateral stays with you. That is the benign case.
If equity falls below two thirds of the required maintenance margin and closing through the order book fails, a backstop procedure kicks in via the so-called liquidator vault. The price all of this is measured against is a mark price that blends external market data with Hyperliquid's own trading data. A spike on a single exchange therefore does not trigger a liquidation immediately; a genuine market break certainly does.
Why a cross backstop hits your entire account
This is where the two modes part company sharply, and it is the point to have understood before the first position. If the backstop procedure is reached, an isolated position hands over only that position and the margin assigned to it. With cross margin, every cross position and the entire cross balance go across.
The mode that makes your capital work more efficiently thus turns the failure of one position into an event for the whole account. Holding two positions that are doing well and one that is doing catastrophically means losing all three in the backstop. This property is not a glitch; it follows from the shared liability and is set out in the documentation.
In practice: the more positions you run simultaneously in cross mode, the larger the amount hanging on a single bad call. An account holding only part of your capital limits that damage more effectively than any stop order.
Confidential does not mean anonymous: what NEAR promises and what stays open
NEAR markets the interface on confidentiality. According to the product page, every user gets their own Hyperliquid trading account, and deposits and withdrawals to it are said to be confidential. On the positions, the October 22 post says "nobody can tell they're yours".
The trade publication crypto.news examined this account and reaches a more guarded conclusion. The product page does not establish that every order, every execution and every position record stays hidden from Hyperliquid's public infrastructure. No independent audit covering the whole trading path is available.
For you that means: the attribution of deposits and withdrawals is the documented promise. An assurance that your trading can never be traced back to you is not. Reading confidentiality as anonymity overestimates what the product commits to.

Hyperliquid without MiCA authorisation: the position for European investors
The product page explicitly excludes US persons and names further blocked jurisdictions. Germany is not among them. Access is open, then, which raises the question of the legal framework.
What obligations the EU regulation places on a provider addressing customers in Germany is set out in our overview of the MiCA licensing duties for crypto companies. cryptoticker.io last worked through Hyperliquid's authorisation status in a piece of its own on September 15, 2026; nothing has changed about it since.
The difference is tangible. With a provider authorised under MiCA you have a named supervisory authority, complaint channels and rules on segregating client funds. With a platform lacking that authorisation, all three are missing. Add to that the leverage question: licensed providers in the EU face tight limits on leveraged products for retail clients, and an offering from outside that framework does not know them.
Find a regulated crypto exchangeFunding hourly: the cost the leverage does not show
A perpetual contract has no expiry date, so it needs a mechanism to keep it at the spot price. That mechanism is called funding: a settlement payment flowing between the long and short sides. At Hyperliquid this happens hourly, and by its own documentation the exchange keeps no fee on those payments.
The direction depends on market sentiment. If more positions are betting on a rising price, the long side pays the short side, and the other way round. At 24 payments a day this adds up to a block of costs that appears nowhere in the leverage calculation yet shrinks your balance just as a price loss does. A position left open for weeks carries that burden throughout.
How heavily the leverage side had built up on NEAR recently was analysed by cryptoticker.io on October 15, 2026: in 74 of 86 perp markets examined, the long side was paying at the time. That was before this week's pullback, so it says nothing about today, but it does show that funding is no minor item on this coin.
Tax and records: derivatives work differently from your spot holdings
Holding cryptocurrencies directly in Germany comes with the familiar one-year period: once a year has passed, the gain on a sale stays tax-free under current law. That period attaches to the private disposal, meaning an asset you own.
A perpetual future is no such asset. You do not own NEAR but a contract on its price. The one-year period therefore does not apply to these gains, and the tax treatment of futures transactions follows different rules from your spot holdings. Because this involves a provider outside the EU framework that issues no German annual tax statement, the burden of proof rests entirely with you. Settle how your gains are classified with a tax adviser before the first position, not after the turn of the year.
In practice you need a gapless record: every deposit, every position, every funding payment and every liquidation with its timestamp and value. A tool that pulls such data together from several sources takes that work off your hands. Starting only in the spring means reconstructing data from a platform that owes you no statement.
Cross margin at NEAR: three steps before the first position
- Check which mode your open positions run in. If you used the interface before October 22, each position sat in its own pot. Verify whether that is still the case, and compare your market's leverage limits with the terms of other providers in our overview of the best perp DEXs.
- Decide how much capital belongs on this account at all. In cross mode the entire cross balance is liable for every single position. If you prefer a platform with named supervision and segregated client funds, the alternatives are among the regulated crypto exchanges.
- Set up the bookkeeping before the first funding payment runs. Export the history regularly and file it in a tool that keeps derivatives separate from your spot holdings. Which ones manage that is in the comparison of crypto tax tools.
The key points to take away
NEAR released cross margin for its more than 50 Hyperliquid perp markets on October 22, 2026, with leverage of up to 40 times. The shared collateral conserves capital but, in the backstop procedure, takes every cross position and the balance with it. Confidential, on the documented promise, are the deposits and withdrawals, not necessarily the whole trading path. Germany is not blocked, a MiCA authorisation does not follow from that, and on tax the burden of proof rests with you.
