Hyperliquid slides 6.8 percent before the unlock, and only 180,000 HYPE go to the team

Analysis: Hyperliquid falls 6.8 percent a day before the core team receives 180,000 HYPE from vesting. The schedule listed almost ten million, and the payout alone does not explain the daily loss.

Hyperliquid is losing ground sharply on Thursday, a day before the core team receives 180,000 HYPE from vesting. What is confirmed: according to CoinGecko, the price fell 6.8 percent in 24 hours to $80.62 (as of November 5, 2026, 3:50 p.m. German time), and on Friday, November 6, the core contributors will receive far fewer tokens than the published vesting schedule listed for that date. Our assessment follows further down: the payout itself is too small to explain the daily loss.

For investors, then, the headline "unlock" matters less than the question of how much new supply can actually reach the market, and which forces are moving the Hyperliquid price more strongly right now.

Hyperliquid price falls 6.8 percent while Bitcoin holds almost steady

HYPE's drop stands out because the rest of the market barely gives way. According to CoinGecko, Bitcoin trades at $78,803 at the same time, only 0.7 percent lower than 24 hours earlier, and Ether is practically unchanged at $2,363. Hyperliquid, by contrast, slid a good eight dollars from its daily high of $88.47. Over seven days it is down 8.8 percent.

That puts HYPE's market capitalisation at around $19.3 billion, with trading volume over the past 24 hours of around $1.2 billion. The price is now 17.7 percent below the record high of $97.96 that HYPE reached on September 23.

The market reports reviewed name no single, confirmed trigger for Thursday's decline. In timing, the slide falls in the final hours before the team payout, and that is exactly the date shown in the calendars of the unlock trackers. HYPE holders should still keep the two things apart: a date in a calendar says nothing yet about whether tokens are actually sold.

Core contributor unlock on November 6: release and payout

A token unlock is the point at which previously locked tokens become transferable. Vesting is the schedule under which founders, employees or investors receive their allocated tokens step by step instead of being able to sell them all at once. At Hyperliquid, these allocations for the core contributors, the team behind the exchange, run monthly.

For November, a team member announced in the project's Discord that Hyperliquid Labs would release 180,000 HYPE from vesting on October 28 and distribute them to team members on November 6. That is what TechFlow reports, citing the Discord announcement. Nine days therefore lie between release and payout. Friday is the day the tokens move into the recipients' wallets, from where they can be traded freely.

At the current price, 180,000 HYPE are worth around $14.5 million. For an exchange with daily turnover in the billions, that is a modest amount.

At Hyperliquid, nine days separate the release on October 28 from the payout on November 6.

Vesting schedule versus commitment: 9.92 million listed, 180,000 distributed

The real finding lies in the difference. Hyperliquid's published vesting schedule lists 9.92 million HYPE for November 6, but the team has committed only 180,000 tokens, around 1.8 percent of the amount on paper. These figures come from a COINOTAG report published on CryptoNews.net. That keeps a good 9.7 million HYPE out of insider supply for now.

This also explains why unlock trackers show very different totals for the same day. Anyone reading only the schedule arrives at around $800 million at today's price. Anyone taking the team's commitment lands at about $14.5 million. Before an investment decision it is therefore worth checking whether a site shows the scheduled or the actually committed value.

According to the same report, 484.74 million HYPE have been released from vesting so far, out of a total of one billion. A good 515 million tokens are therefore still waiting for later dates. The gap between schedule and commitment shifts supply into the future; it does not cancel it.

HYPE circulating supply: how much weight 180,000 tokens carry

Circulating supply is the number of tokens that can actually be traded freely. For HYPE, CoinGecko currently shows 239.4 million tokens. Measured against that, 180,000 HYPE amount to around 0.075 percent. The figure is close to the 0.08 percent cited by COINOTAG.

A second yardstick is trading. With daily volume of around $1.2 billion, the entire team payout equals about 1.2 percent of a single trading day. Even if every recipient sold immediately on Friday, that would not be an event in such a liquid market that must on its own push the price down by several percent.

Things would look different if the full scheduled amount arrived. 9.92 million HYPE would equal a good 4.1 percent of today's circulating supply. That order of magnitude does not materialise on Friday, but it stays in the background of every future date.

Circulating supply is growing steadily in any case. According to 24/7 Wall St., it rose after the unlock for early contributors from around 222 million HYPE in September to around 239 million by October 28. More tokens at the same price mean a higher market capitalisation that buyers first have to carry.

Team sales compared: September, October and November

A look at past dates shows that the team has handled releases very differently so far. In early October, Hyperliquid Labs took 3.75 million HYPE out of staking to sell them over the counter to a single institutional buyer. cryptoticker.io reported on this on October 2, based on a statement by co-founder iliensinc in the project's Discord. An over-the-counter sale, also called an OTC deal, takes place directly between two parties at a pre-agreed price and does not initially touch the exchange's order book.

By that measure the November date is small. 180,000 HYPE are less than a twentieth of the October package. Anyone who wants to look more closely at the mechanics of such dates will find the difference between a large cliff and monthly instalments in our explainer on token unlocks and vesting.

Whale sales and buybacks: who is moving the HYPE price right now

Far larger sums were recently moved by individual large holders, known in the crypto market as whales. According to data from the blockchain tracker Lookonchain, cited by 24/7 Wall St. in the report linked above, whales sold HYPE worth around $109 million at the end of October, after NYSE parent ICE added the qualifier "subject to regulatory approvals" to its announcement on Hyperliquid-based futures. One wallet sold 912,383 HYPE for $82 million, a second 296,705 HYPE for $27 million.

These sales were therefore roughly seven times the size of Friday's entire team payout. On the other side stands the Assistance Fund: Hyperliquid channels trading fees into this fund, which buys HYPE on the open market. Its buying power, however, only grows with turnover and fees, so it cannot buy faster than traders pay fees. According to the same report, the US ETFs on HYPE recorded no inflows on October 30.

Part of the buybacks is permanently destroyed. That shows in total supply: CoinGecko lists 951.5 million HYPE, about 48.5 million fewer than the maximum of one billion. What ultimately matters for the price is whether fee income and demand absorb the ongoing releases.

The Hyperliquid unlock in context: our assessment

Our assessment: for the HYPE price, the team payout on November 6 is more of a signal than a burden. Its size argues for that, as 180,000 tokens equal 0.075 percent of circulating supply and about 1.2 percent of a day's turnover. So does the fact that the team stays far below the scheduled amount and already chose an over-the-counter buyer over the open market in October. Against it: the millions held back do not vanish and may reappear at later dates, and whale sales recently amounted to a multiple of the team amount. Thursday's loss cannot be explained by the payout alone.

Buying HYPE from Germany: MiCA, holding period and leverage

Anyone who wants to trade HYPE faces a particular issue: Hyperliquid itself is a decentralised exchange without a licence under the European crypto regulation MiCA. What that means for your balance is summarised in our article Using Hyperliquid from Germany. Anyone who would rather buy the token through a regulated provider should first check the ESMA register to see whether the exchange holds a MiCA licence; our comparison of crypto exchanges gives an overview.

Holding period and staking

For tax in Germany, gains from selling cryptocurrencies are tax-free if more than one year passes between purchase and sale. Within this holding period, gains up to the exemption limit of €1,000 a year remain tax-free; above it, the entire gain is taxed at the personal rate. According to the Federal Finance Ministry's letter of May 2022, staking does not extend the holding period, but staking income itself is taxable when received. Anyone with several purchases at different prices can keep track of deadlines and cost bases with a crypto tax tool.

Perpetual futures and liquidation

HYPE can also be traded through perpetual futures. These contracts without an expiry date track the price and allow leverage. A liquidation is the forced closing of a leveraged position once the posted collateral no longer covers the losses. At ten times leverage, a price drop of just under ten percent is enough to largely wipe out a long position; Thursday's daily loss was already 6.8 percent. Anyone trading around a date like November 6 should keep leverage low and know the liquidation price before entering. Platforms offering perpetual futures differ markedly in fees, leverage limits and margin rules.

HYPE price levels: $76 below, $97.96 above

On the downside, 24/7 Wall St. names two areas: the 50-day average of closing prices at around $85 (as of the report on November 1), which HYPE has broken below with today's decline, and the October low at around $76. From the current price that is a good five percent away. If the price falls below it, HYPE trades below its lowest level of October.

On the upside, the record high of $97.96 from September 23 remains the level at which two attempts have failed. In between lies Thursday's daily high of $88.47. A return above that area would show that the market has shrugged off Friday's payout.

Hyperliquid unlock: below $76 the picture turns

The payout on November 6 is small, yet the price is still under pressure. Three steps help you assess the situation yourself.

  1. Watch the recipients' wallets: On-chain trackers show whether the 180,000 HYPE move to exchanges from Friday. If you want to buy, the comparison of regulated crypto exchanges lists providers with a MiCA licence.
  2. Check your leverage: A leveraged position needs a liquidation price well below $76. Platform fees and margin rules are listed in the perp DEX comparison.
  3. Record your holding period: Note the purchase date and cost basis of every HYPE position so the one-year period is properly documented. The tax tools and portfolio trackers help with this.
