Tether Gold in November 2026: a token on one fine troy ounce, and the question of the custodian
Tether Gold (XAUt) is a token that represents a claim on one fine troy ounce of physical gold. According to the issuer, each token stands for an undivided interest in a gold bar reserve meeting the London delivery standard, held in Switzerland. The price therefore does not follow a crypto narrative, it follows the gold price per fine troy ounce. On 30 October 2026, XAUt trades at roughly $3,996.76, which puts it in 31st place among the largest crypto assets by market capitalisation. That makes XAUt fundamentally different from a governance token: there is no protocol whose fees carry the price, there is a commodity and a custodian.
What has changed in recent weeks
Very little, and that is precisely the point. XAUt opened October at $4,156.07, marked a high of $4,216.03 and a low of $3,974.57; the daily close on 29 October was $3,998.70. Over seven days the token is down roughly 0.7 percent, over 30 days roughly 4.3 percent, over 90 days roughly 1.0 percent. For comparison with the preceding months: September opened at $4,439.27 and closed at $4,156.07, August opened at $4,037.54 and closed at $4,439.26. A monthly range of a few percent is unusually narrow for a crypto asset, and it is the core of the product.
Why this forecast is cautious
A forecast for XAUt is in truth a forecast for the gold price, plus a risk that gold itself does not carry: the risk of the issuer and of custody. The year 2026 shows both sides. From the opening price of the year of $4,323.82 the price ran up to $5,597.10 on 29 January, the twelve-month high, and gave that lead back in full by the end of June. Today the price sits roughly 7.6 percent below the opening price of the year and roughly 28.6 percent below the twelve-month high. Our scenarios start from the opening price of the year, and the average value for 2026 sits just below today's price. Anyone looking at gold as a store of value regularly compares XAUt with Bitcoin and with its direct competitor PAX Gold, which maps the same fine troy ounce in the same way.

What Tether Gold is and how the token works
XAUt is a token on Ethereum and is additionally listed on BNB Chain. The data provider assigns it to the categories tokenised gold, tokenised commodities and real world asset protocols. The mechanism is simple, and that is exactly where it differs from most crypto assets: the issuer takes gold into custody and issues tokens against it, one token per fine troy ounce. There is no emission as a reward, no token burn, no staking yield and no halving rhythm. The circulating amount grows and shrinks with the amount of gold held in custody.
The quantities, measured on the reporting date
In circulation are 729,423.56 XAUt out of a reported total supply of 827,417.63 XAUt, roughly 88 percent. The data provider reports no maximum supply, and that is factually correct: the ceiling is not written into code, it is the amount of gold the issuer holds. Market capitalisation stands at roughly $2,915.33 million, the fully diluted value at roughly $3,306.99 million. The gap between the two figures is not an unlock calendar here and not a dilution risk, it is simply gold that is held in custody but has not yet been issued as tokens.
What we can say about redemption, and what we cannot
The issuer describes a path back into the physical metal: after verifying their identity, holders can request delivery in Switzerland or receive the cash equivalent. On the details, however, the sources available to us disagree, and they are largely secondary sources. They name different company names for the issuer, different minimum amounts for a physical delivery and different fees. We therefore do not include any of these figures in our scenarios and do not state them here as fact. Anyone considering redemption should check the terms and the current attestation directly with the issuer. One point stands even without those figures: a minimum amount the size of a full bar would in practice reserve physical redemption for large holders, while small holders would remain dependent on selling in the market.
Where XAUt is traded
According to the data provider the token is quoted across 494 market pairs. We measured the distribution of daily turnover ourselves, across the spot market pairs: of roughly $306.69 million in daily turnover, roughly $237.42 million sits on centralised exchanges and roughly $69.26 million in decentralised pools, so the share of centralised exchanges is roughly 77 percent. 34 centralised exchanges each carry more than one million dollars over 24 hours. Among the largest venues, Binance with roughly $23.10 million and Bybit with roughly $14.78 million are supervised addresses; the single largest venue, however, is Deepcoin with roughly $31.31 million, a venue we do not count among the major addresses. Liquidity is therefore broadly distributed and not dependent on decentralised pools, but the top of the list is not consistently so.
Gold in the portfolio, a token in the wallet
The benefit of the product lies in the form, not in the commodity: gold becomes divisible, transferable around the clock and usable as collateral in contracts, without a vault and without shipping. In exchange, the holder swaps the custody risk of a safe deposit box for the risk of a single issuer. Providers of tokenised assets such as Ondo Finance, which bring bonds and equities onto the chain, work by the same logic, and Tron is another major home for value-stable tokens. For the counter-test, compare a crypto asset with no issuer: Bitcoin carries no redemption right, but equally no custodian who can fail.
