Which cryptocurrencies are there? The list of the main coins by purpose
Around 22,500 cryptocurrencies are counted, and only a few dozen carry meaningful capital. This overview sorts the most important of them by their job, from means of payment through stablecoins to tokenised securities, each with an order of magnitude as of October 25, 2026.

A complete list of every cryptocurrency is worth little to an investor. As of October 25, 2026, CoinGecko tracks around 22,500 active cryptocurrencies, and the whole market weighs in at roughly $2.71 trillion. Bitcoin alone accounts for 59.5 percent of that, Ethereum for another 10.5 percent. The rest is spread across everything else, and there the amounts fall quickly to levels where a single sale moves the price.
A list only becomes useful once it is sorted by purpose. A means of payment, a platform for programs, a token pegged to the dollar and a tokenised security solve entirely different jobs, carry different risks and are treated differently in Germany. The overview below goes through those groups, names the largest members of each and gives an order of magnitude as of October 25, 2026.
The ranking by market capitalisation is always available and up to date on our table of the largest coins. This page sorts the same names by job rather than by size.
Means of payment: Bitcoin, Litecoin and Bitcoin Cash move value without an account
The oldest group pursues the original purpose: sending value from A to B without a bank booking it in between. Satoshi Nakamoto described that in the Bitcoin whitepaper in 2008 as a payment system without a trusted intermediary.
Bitcoin (BTC), at roughly $1.62 trillion, is by far the largest cryptocurrency and is today held mainly as a store of value rather than used to pay. Supply is capped at 21 million units. Litecoin (LTC), around $4.4 billion, is an older fork with shorter block times. Bitcoin Cash (BCH), around $5.5 billion, emerged in 2017 from the dispute over block size. Kaspa (KAS) technically belongs here too and works with a structure that allows several blocks at the same time.
This group has a feature that never shows up in lists: the older and more widely established a payment coin is, the longer the list of venues where you can sell it for euros. With smaller members you often find only pairs against Tether, which makes your return to euros depend on a second step.
Smart contract platforms: Ethereum, Solana and Cardano run programs
These networks are not currencies in the narrow sense but computing platforms. Their token pays for computing time, and exchanges, credit markets, stablecoins and games run on top.
Ethereum (ETH), around $286 billion, is the largest of these platforms and carries the bulk of all stablecoins and tokenised assets; the details on where it stands are in our Ethereum analysis. Solana (SOL), around $60 billion, goes for high throughput and low fees; what the network does differently in technical terms is in the Solana profile. BNB, around $98 billion, is platform token and exchange token in one. Behind them come TRON (TRX) at around $31 billion, strong in stablecoin transfers, plus Cardano (ADA) at around $7.7 billion, NEAR at around $5.8 billion, and Avalanche (AVAX) and Sui at roughly $3.8 billion to $3.9 billion each.
The mechanism behind the price differs fundamentally from Bitcoin here. With a platform, demand for the token grows with use of the network, because every transaction burns fees or pays them out to operators. If use falls, that part of demand disappears.

Stablecoins: Tether and USDC hold the price to a currency
A stablecoin tracks the price of a state currency, almost always the US dollar. It is the market's means of transport: anyone parking gains or moving between exchanges mostly does so in stablecoins rather than euros.
Tether (USDT), at around $182 billion, is the largest and therefore sits third in the overall market; its backing and its position under European law are in the Tether profile. USDC follows at around $72 billion, USDS at around $10 billion, and Ethena USDe and Dai at roughly $4.5 billion each.
For investors in Germany, the important question with this group is not the price but the authorisation. The European regulation MiCA sets its own requirements for issuers of such tokens, and venues have therefore partly restricted or switched pairs with non-authorised stablecoins. Which coins a provider lists can change at short notice without anything happening to the token itself.
Find an exchange for the coins on this listPrivacy coins: Monero and Zcash hide the amount and the parties
With Bitcoin, every transfer is permanently public. Privacy coins obscure exactly that, using different methods. Monero (XMR), around $11.4 billion, hides sender, recipient and amount as a matter of principle. Zcash (ZEC), around $20.2 billion, offers shielded and open addresses side by side.
In practice this is the most restricted group. Several large venues have delisted privacy coins in the EU, because the origin of amounts cannot be traced. Anyone holding such tokens should expect the number of selling routes to get smaller rather than larger.
DeFi and infrastructure tokens: Uniswap and Chainlink earn on the flow
These tokens belong to services that run on the platforms. Uniswap (UNI), around $4.2 billion, sits behind a decentralised exchange. Chainlink (LINK), around $8.7 billion, delivers price data and messages from the outside world into programs, which is what makes credit markets and tokenised products possible in the first place.
Valuation in this group hangs on the volume running through the service, and on whether the token takes a share of it. The two belong checked separately: a heavily used protocol can have a token that gets nothing from that revenue, because it serves only to vote.
Tokenised assets: Ondo and Figure bring bonds onto the blockchain
The youngest group maps classic assets digitally, meaning government bonds, fund units, loans and equities. Figure Heloc, at around $27.2 billion, already sits ninth in the overall market and securitises real estate loans. Ondo (ONDO) is the better-known name in the segment; what the company offers is in the Ondo Finance profile.
Here is the most striking finding of this list. A credit product that appeared in no crypto ranking two years ago now stands ahead of Dogecoin, Monero and Chainlink. This group is growing into the market from the finance industry, not out of the crypto scene, and it brings that industry's rules with it: access often restricted to certain investor groups, but in return a named debtor.
Exchange and platform tokens: BNB, LEO and HYPE depend on an operator
These tokens are issued by a company or a trading platform and bring benefits there, fee discounts for instance. Hyperliquid (HYPE), around $16.9 billion, belongs to the largest decentralised derivatives venue. LEO, around $8.3 billion, and WhiteBIT Coin (WBT), around $9.2 billion, each depend on an exchange.
The risk in this group is the easiest to name: it is the operator's risk. If the platform loses customers, an authorisation or trust, that hits the token directly, regardless of where the overall market stands.

Meme tokens: Dogecoin and Shiba Inu live on attention
Meme tokens have no purpose beyond trading in them. Dogecoin (DOGE), at around $12 billion, is the largest and started in 2013 as a joke; its supply keeps growing without limit. Shiba Inu (SHIB) follows at a clear distance.
The price here follows attention, meaning posts on social networks, listings and celebrity. A total loss is possible at any time in this group and, unlike a platform or a tokenised loan, there is no usage on which a value could be anchored. In a list sorted by purpose, meme tokens therefore belong as their own group with their own risk, not as a cheap alternative to the big names.
Secure your coins with a hardware walletMarket capitalisation sorts the list, purpose explains it
Almost every ranking orders by market capitalisation, meaning price times circulating supply. That number is useful and often misread, because it says nothing about the money invested: every unit is counted at the last traded price, even when only a fraction of the supply is tradable at that price.
Two more metrics belong next to it. Trading volume shows how much actually changes hands. And the share of supply that circulates freely shows how much is still held by the project, investors or lock-ups. A token with a high market capitalisation and thin volume falls faster than its ranking suggests.
For comparison over time, Bitcoin dominance is the useful figure, meaning Bitcoin's share of the overall market. As of October 25, 2026 it stands at 59.5 percent. If that share rises, the smaller groups on this list lose ground in relative terms, even when their prices in dollars stay the same.
What a list does not show: supply, custody and authorisation
Three things decide more about the outcome in practice than the ranking does, and none of them appears in a table.
Supply. Bitcoin is capped at 21 million units, Dogecoin grows without limit, and many younger tokens release further quantities over years. Look only at the price and you miss that for some of these names the supply grows faster than demand.
Custody. A token is only as reachable as the key to it. If the holding sits at an exchange, it belongs to the provider on its balance sheet; if it sits in your own wallet, the owner carries the responsibility alone.
Authorisation. Whether a coin remains tradable against euros in Germany depends on the venue's permission and on the rules for the token itself. Privacy coins and stablecoins without European authorisation are the clearest examples; our crypto exchange comparison gives an overview of the providers that hold a permission.
A fourth point concerns tax. Private sales in Germany fall under the holding period set out in income tax law, and it treats every group on this list alike. Swapping one token for another counts as a sale there, including a swap into a stablecoin.
Choosing crypto: purpose first, market capitalisation second
Three steps that turn this list into a decision:
- Fix the purpose before you pick a name. Store of value, platform, parking position in dollars or tokenised security are four different goals with four different risks. For the parking position, the stablecoin overview is the right place to start.
- Check the candidate's supply and trading routes. Is there a euro pair or only a pair against Tether, and how much of the supply circulates freely? Where a coin is available and at what cost is shown in the exchange comparison.
- Decide on custody before you buy. Small amounts can stay with an authorised provider, larger ones belong in your own custody. The devices for that are in the hardware wallet comparison.
