Grayscale opened in-kind subscriptions for ten of its crypto funds on October 21, among them the Avalanche Staking ETF under the ticker GAVA. Anyone wanting to swap fund shares for AVAX needs roughly $235,800 for it, according to the provider, plus an authorised market participant as intermediary. For retail investors in Germany nothing changes immediately, because the fund cannot be traded here.
The announcement is interesting for another reason: it falls in a week in which no fresh money at all flowed into the Avalanche funds and the price gave way sharply. Avalanche trades at $8.92, the equivalent of 7.96 euros, and is therefore 10.34 percent below where it stood seven days ago. Those are CoinGecko figures as of Saturday, 13:00. Anyone holding AVAX or weighing an entry is served two things at once: an institutional opening that passes them by, and demand that has been stalling for two weeks.
Where the Avalanche price stands after seven days
The weekly high was $9.93, reached on October 21 at 18:00, the day of the Grayscale announcement. The weekly low of $8.86 dates from this Saturday morning at 10:00. Between those two points lie roughly eleven percent, and the current price is clinging to the lower end of that range. Over 24 hours the loss comes to 2.38 percent, over 30 days to 11.83 percent. All figures come from the CoinGecko market overview.
That puts Avalanche in 28th place among the largest crypto assets by market capitalisation, at roughly $3.96 billion. In circulation are 443.9 million AVAX out of a maximum of 720 million that will ever exist. Turnover over the past 24 hours stood at $199.4 million. The all-time high of $144.96 from November 2021 is 93.85 percent away, which puts the scale of this market in perspective.
The decline fits the wider picture. Bitcoin is holding just below $81,000 and Ether below $2,400, and both lost a good one percent over the past 24 hours. Avalanche fell harder than the overall market, which for assets outside the top ten is the rule in weak phases rather than the exception.
In-kind subscription in a crypto ETF: how it works
An in-kind subscription is the exchange of fund shares for the asset itself rather than for cash. Normally a large investor wires dollars, the fund buys AVAX with them and issues shares. With an in-kind subscription the investor delivers the AVAX directly and receives shares in return. It works the same way round: on redemption they receive AVAX instead of cash.
For the fund this has two practical consequences. First, one trading step falls away, which lowers execution costs. Second, an investor who already owns AVAX does not have to sell them in order to get into the fund. That is precisely how Grayscale justifies the step in its announcement of October 21: in-kind subscriptions could reduce the burden of self-custody and lower the cost of trade execution. The page blocks automated retrieval; in a browser it reads normally.
The exchange does not run through the stock market but through the primary market. Grayscale writes that clients wanting to use an in-kind subscription must work with an Authorized Participant or another route of access to one. An Authorized Participant is a licensed trading house permitted to create and return shares directly with the fund. Retail clients are not among them.
A $235,800 minimum: who can actually use the GAVA in-kind route
The entry thresholds are the real heart of the announcement. For GAVA, Grayscale cites an approximate figure of $235,800, calculated with prices from October 20. Across all ten opened products the range runs from roughly $80,300 to $364,800. These amounts are estimates and move with the prices of the respective crypto assets, so they are not fixed fee tiers.
That makes it clear who this is built for. A family office, an asset manager or a company with AVAX on its balance sheet can take this route. A saver with a four-figure portfolio cannot, regardless of which country they live in. On top of that, GAVA is a US product. According to the provider’s announcement it was launched on the Nasdaq on March 12, 2026; in German brokerage accounts it cannot be ordered through normal channels, because the documents required for EU distribution are missing.

Avalanche ETF inflows: $31.6 million, and no fresh money since October 8
Alongside the opening, demand has stalled. The Avalanche ETFs have seen no new inflows since October 8. Cumulatively, net inflows stand at around $31.6 million and net assets at $55.5 million. These figures come from the data service SoSoValue as of October 21 and were picked up by Yahoo Finance; the provider itself blocks automated retrieval.
Put the scale in perspective before drawing anything from it. Fund assets of $55.5 million stand against a market capitalisation of $3.96 billion. The American Avalanche funds therefore hold about 1.4 percent of the value of all AVAX in circulation. For Bitcoin that share is higher by orders of magnitude. For the AVAX price these funds are thus not a main driver but a sentiment gauge of whether institutional money is stepping in or not.
As a sentiment gauge, the zero is telling. Two weeks without a single day of inflows means that nobody on this side used the weakness to buy more. Inflows into crypto funds typically run pro-cyclically, arriving when prices rise and staying away when they fall. For anyone waiting for a turn, this is a metric that can be checked daily.
Which AVAX ETPs can be traded on Xetra
The American fund is not the relevant route for European investors. In Germany, exchange-traded products on AVAX are listed as ETPs, and two of them explicitly carry staking income.
The Bitwise Avalanche Staking ETP runs under the ticker AVNB with ISIN DE000A4APQX6, is physically backed with AVAX and can be traded via Xetra. The issuer is based in Germany. According to its own figures the total expense ratio is 0.85 percent a year, and realised staking income is credited to the product on an ongoing basis, less a service fee amounting to about a third of that income.
The second product is the 21Shares Avalanche Staking ETP with ISIN CH1135202088, also listed on Xetra. Here the provider cites a product price of 2.50 percent, and the staking yield is credited to the net asset value daily. The difference between 0.85 and 2.50 percent is not a detail but, over years, the largest single item in your cost calculation. An overview of which listed crypto products are accessible in Germany and what to look for when buying is in our guide to crypto ETFs in Germany.
The third route is buying directly on an exchange with EU authorisation. The AVAX then belong to you, with everything that comes with it: your own custody, your own decision on staking, and a different tax treatment. Which venues are authorised under MiCA and what a purchase there costs is shown in our crypto exchange comparison.
Find an exchange for your AVAX purchaseHow to check an AVAX ETP’s expense ratio yourself
The issuers’ figures are in the product documents, and you can reach them without a brokerage login. Three places are enough. The provider’s product page carries the ticker, the ISIN and the running costs, usually shown as a total expense ratio or management fee. The key information document, the PRIIP KID, states the same costs again in the legally prescribed form, along with a worked example over the intended holding period. And the factsheet says how the staking income is handled.
When comparing, make sure you are putting the same number against the same number. A provider quoting a low percentage but keeping a third of the staking income can end up more expensive than one with a higher expense ratio that passes everything on. Calculate with the net return after all deductions, therefore, and not with the fee alone.
A second point concerns how current the documents are. A factsheet dated end of August carries different figures from a product page from mid-October, and with the two Xetra products that is in fact the case. In case of doubt always take the more recent document and check it again shortly before the order.
Staking yield at Avalanche: what reaches the investor
AVAX is a proof-of-stake asset. Anyone locking up their coins in the network receives newly issued AVAX for it, because they help confirm transactions. A staking ETP does that for you and passes on part of the income.
None of the issuers names a fixed yield, and there is a good reason for that: the figure fluctuates with the number of locked coins and the network’s issuance rate, and in theory it can fall to zero. What you can compare is the mechanics. Is it settled daily or at longer intervals? How much does the issuer keep? And is the yield credited to the net asset value, so that it sits in the price, or distributed?
With direct ownership there is a practical hurdle on top that many underestimate. Anyone delegating AVAX themselves locks them up for a set period, and until it ends you cannot get at them. What that means for delegators is set out in our piece on the Helicon upgrade and the lock-up periods in AVAX staking. If you want to set staking providers and their terms against each other, our comparison of staking platforms helps.

Holding period and tax: ETP gains and direct AVAX holdings are treated differently
Here lies the difference that matters more over the years than any fee. If you buy AVAX directly and hold the coins for longer than a year, gains from the sale in private assets are tax-free under the law as it currently stands. Within the year your personal income tax rate applies, with an exemption threshold of 1,000 euros for private disposals.
An ETP is legally not a crypto asset but a security. Gains from it fall under the flat-rate withholding tax, regardless of how long you have held it. The one-year holding period does not apply there. In return, a German custodian bank normally remits the tax directly, which reduces the work in your tax return.
Staking income from direct ownership counts as other income and has its own, far lower exemption threshold of 256 euros per calendar year. Since January 1, 2026, providers also report data to the Federal Central Tax Office; the basis is the EU directive DAC8 in its German implementation. The first report for 2026 is due by July 31, 2027. Which details your tax office receives as a result is set out in a separate article.
Because the amounts and the attribution depend on the individual case, this is an overview and not tax advice. For documenting your purchases and holding periods, our comparison of crypto tax software has suitable programmes.
Custody: who owns the AVAX when an ETP stakes them
With a physically backed ETP the AVAX sit with a custodian appointed by the issuer, and you hold a security that refers to that holding. On top of the price risk you therefore carry the risk of the issuer and its custodian. In return you do not have to worry about keys.
With direct ownership the coins are yours, and with them the responsibility for the keys. Lose access and the holding is lost, with no hotline and no recovery. That is not an argument against self-custody but one for a properly tested backup. How Avalanche distinguishes technically between its subnetworks, and why that matters for withdrawals, we showed using the example of fees on the C-Chain.
Levels up and down: $8.86 against $9.93
The two points of the past week are the obvious ones to watch. On the downside the weekly low of $8.86 is the first level that counts, and it was tested this morning. Below it, at $8.50, lies a round number with no particular history, but with the property that orders often gather there.
On the upside the price would first have to get back above the $9.00 line before the weekly high of $9.93 comes within reach again. A good eleven percent lie in between. These are observations from the price data of the past seven days, not price targets and not a forecast. How the picture looks over a longer run is kept continuously updated on our Avalanche price page.
Independently of the chart, one classification from the spring remains relevant. The US supervisory authorities SEC and CFTC classified sixteen crypto assets as digital commodities in a joint statement on March 17, 2026, and AVAX was among them. A coalition from the industry is currently pushing to move that classification from a non-binding guideline into binding law. That is not decided, and until then it is a statement of intent, not the legal position.
Compare staking yields for your AVAXWhat the inflow lull means in practice for AVAX holders
Summed up soberly, three findings remain. Institutional access to Avalanche is becoming more convenient, but only from a size that retail investors do not reach. Demand from the existing funds has dried up for two weeks, and that at a price which has given up a good ten percent over the week. And the routes open to you differ less in the price of the product than in the tax treatment and in the question of who holds the coins.
What you draw from that depends on your time horizon. For anyone wanting to hold AVAX for several years, the holding period on direct ownership weighs more heavily than an expense ratio below one percent. Anyone who wants to stay flexible and trade through their usual brokerage account pays that fee and gets automatic tax remittance in return. Both are defensible; they are simply not the same thing.
Avalanche ETFs: without fresh inflows the $8.86 level is what counts
- Settle on your route before you think about the price. Decide whether you want to hold AVAX directly or through a security. Which venues are authorised in the EU and what a purchase costs there is in the crypto exchange comparison.
- Work through the staking terms, not just the fee. With a staking product, check what share of the income the issuer keeps; with your own delegation, how long your coins are locked. The providers’ terms are in the comparison of staking platforms.
- Document the purchase date and holding period from the start. With direct ownership the date decides on tax exemption after one year, and since 2026 providers report to the Federal Central Tax Office anyway. Suitable programmes for this are in the comparison of crypto tax software.
