XRP Staking: Where Does the Yield Come From When the XRP Ledger Pays None?
The XRP Ledger has no native staking, so any yield on XRP is always paid by a third party. We explain how lending, the built-in AMM and stXRP on Flare work, and how German tax authorities treat the income.

XRP staking in the true sense does not exist. The XRP Ledger runs without proof of stake, so you cannot lock up your XRP with a validator and receive new coins from the protocol in return. Anyone still looking for a yield on XRP always gets it from a third party: from an exchange that lends out your coins, from traders who pay fees in a liquidity pool, or from a protocol on another blockchain. Each of these routes carries its own risk, and none is comparable with real staking on Ethereum or Solana.
This guide sorts out the yield routes for investors in Germany: what lies behind exchanges' lending products, how the XRP Ledger's built-in AMM distributes fees, what FXRP and stXRP on Flare do, and how the German tax office treats such income. If you first want to understand XRP in general, our overview What is XRP? covers the 100 billion coins and Ripple's role.
Is there native XRP staking? The XRP Ledger's consensus has no stake
Staking means locking up coins so that a network can select and reward its validators. Whoever stakes a lot may propose blocks; whoever cheats loses part of the stake. This principle is called proof of stake, and it is exactly what the XRP Ledger lacks.
The XRP Ledger uses its own consensus mechanism. Each server keeps a list of validators it trusts, the Unique Node List (UNL). When enough of these validators agree on the same transactions, the new ledger state counts as confirmed. According to the documentation on xrpl.org, the mechanism tolerates up to 20 percent of trusted validators behaving faultily. A stake in XRP plays no part in this, and the protocol pays validators no reward.
Fees go to nobody either: every transaction burns a small amount of XRP, which then disappears permanently from circulation. So there is no pot from which holders could receive a staking yield. Whenever a platform advertises "XRP staking", you are always getting a different product under a borrowed name.
What the reserve on the XRP Ledger means
One point often causes confusion: every XRP account holds a locked reserve. Since the reduction in December 2024, the base reserve has been 1 XRP, plus 0.2 XRP for each object your account owns, such as a trustline for a token. This reserve stays in your account but earns nothing. It is an anti-spam deposit and has nothing to do with staking.
Ripple debates staking models: two drafts from David Schwartz, no timetable
The topic is not entirely off the table. In November 2025, J. Ayo Akinyele, head of engineering at RippleX, publicly opened the question of native staking for discussion. He named two prerequisites: a reliable source for the rewards and a fair way to distribute them. The ledger lacks both today.
David Schwartz, then Ripple's chief technology officer, responded by sketching two models, as Decrypt reported. In the first, an inner group of around 16 validators would advance the ledger with stakes and penalties, while the existing validators would act as an outer layer overseeing changes and fees. In the second, consensus would remain as it is and fees would fund zero-knowledge proofs. Schwartz called both ideas technically promising but impractical for the foreseeable future because of complexity, effort and risk. There is no amendment on which validators could vote.
For investors, that means anyone advertising imminent official XRP staking today is selling an expectation. Only the routes that already exist are reliable.
XRP lending on exchanges: the interest comes from borrowers
The most convenient way to earn a yield on XRP is the earn or lending products of large trading venues. Lending means you hand your coins to the exchange, which lends them on, usually to traders using leverage or short-selling, and passes part of the interest on to you. Some providers still call this staking because the word sounds better.
The yield fluctuates with demand for borrowed XRP. In calm markets it often falls to a fraction of a percent; in hectic phases it rises. Fixed rates over longer terms are rare and usually tied to a lock-up period during which you cannot sell. Which platforms offer such programmes and on what terms is compared in our crypto lending comparison.
Counterparty risk when lending
By lending, you give up control of your coins. If the exchange or its borrower runs into trouble, your balance can be frozen or lost entirely. The collapses of Celsius and other lending platforms in 2022 showed exactly that. There is no statutory deposit protection for crypto balances as there is for savings accounts.

AMM on the XRP Ledger: trading fees of up to 1 percent as a source of yield
The only yield route directly on the XRP Ledger is the built-in automated market maker (AMM). An AMM is a liquidity pool that holds two assets and settles swaps according to a fixed formula, without a buyer having to wait for a seller. On the XRP Ledger it has been live since March 2024, after validators approved the XLS-30 amendment.
It works like this: you deposit, for example, XRP and a stablecoin into a pool and receive LP tokens representing your share of the pool. Every swap through the pool pays a trading fee that stays in the pool. According to the AMM documentation on xrpl.org, it ranges from 0 to 1 percent and is set by a vote of the eight largest LP token holders, weighted by their share. When you return your LP tokens, you get your share of both assets including the accumulated fees.
The AMM is linked to the ledger's built-in exchange. Payments and orders automatically route through the pool, the order book or both, depending on which is cheaper. A pool always holds exactly two assets, at most one of which may be XRP. The trustline to the LP tokens incurs the usual reserve of 0.2 XRP.
The auction for the fee discount
A particularity of the XRP Ledger is the auction slot. Traders can bid LP tokens for a 24-hour discount and then pay only a tenth of the normal fee. The LP tokens bid flow back into the pool, slightly increasing the share of the other liquidity providers. Arbitrage traders use this slot to close price gaps between pool and order book more cheaply.
Impermanent loss in the XRP pool: price moves eat into the fees
The catch with pools is impermanent loss. This is the disadvantage a liquidity provider suffers compared with simply holding when the price ratio of the two assets shifts. If XRP rises sharply against the stablecoin, the pool sells more and more XRP along the way. When you then withdraw your capital, you have less XRP and more stablecoin than at the start, and would have earned more by simply holding.
The xrpl.org documentation puts it soberly: if relative prices change, liquidity providers can suffer a loss on the currency risk between the two assets. Fees only offset this disadvantage if enough trading flows through the pool. In small pools with little volume that is rarely the case. So check beforehand how much volume a pool actually moves, not just how high its fee is set.
Compare staking platformsFXRP and stXRP on Flare: XRP staking via another blockchain
The route that comes closest to the notion of XRP staking runs through the Flare network. Flare represents XRP through its FAssets system as FXRP, a fully collateralised representation that can be used in smart contracts on Flare. Anyone who deposits FXRP into the vault of the Firelight protocol receives stXRP at a 1:1 ratio. This is a liquid staking token: it represents the deposited position and can be traded further or used in other applications on Flare.
Firelight launched at the start of December 2025. In the first phase there was no reward in XRP yet, only points for early users. The actual yield is meant to come from an insurance model: DeFi protocols buy cover against failures from Firelight, and their fees flow to stXRP holders. The deposited XRP therefore insure other parties' risks, and the yield only arises if protocols actually buy this cover.
Where Firelight stands in autumn 2026
According to an analysis by the trade portal CryptoSlate in mid-September 2026, the vault held around $71.7 million in FXRP. Whether the second phase with active cover and rewards is already running could not be confirmed there. Withdrawals currently take one to two days. With the planned 30-day cover periods, withdrawing could in future take a good 30 days and, in the worst case, almost 60.
Firelight risks: loss buffer, bridge and exit in FXRP
Holding stXRP carries more risk than an exchange. If an insured loss is recognised, a dedicated loss buffer in stablecoins pays first. If it is not enough, the losses hit the positions in the vault pro rata, and your shares then redeem for less FXRP. On top of that comes the risk of the smart contracts on Flare and of the bridge that converts XRP into FXRP.
On exit you also get FXRP on Flare back, not XRP on the XRP Ledger. You have to initiate the conversion yourself. Anyone selling stXRP on a marketplace beforehand depends on the liquidity there and may get less than the calculated value. For such a position you also need your own wallet for Flare; which devices are suitable for secure storage is shown in our hardware wallet comparison.
XRP staking compared: source of yield, risk and exit
The three routes differ mainly in who pays the yield and how quickly you can get your coins back. The overview summarises the situation as of November 5, 2026.
| Route | Who pays the yield | Main risk | Exit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lending on an exchange | The exchange's borrowers | Failure of the exchange or the borrower | Immediately or after a lock-up, depending on the product |
| AMM pool on the XRP Ledger | Traders, via trading fees | Impermanent loss when prices move | Any time by returning the LP tokens |
| stXRP via Firelight on Flare | Protocols that buy cover | Claims, smart contracts, bridge | Currently one to two days, planned up to almost 60 days, redeemed in FXRP |
Avoid any platform that promises a fixed, high yield on XRP without saying where it comes from. With real staking the network pays; with XRP it is always someone who does something with your coins. An overview of platforms offering staking for other coins can be found in our staking comparison.

XRP income and tax in Germany: Section 22 of the Income Tax Act and the 256-euro limit
For tax purposes, the German tax office treats income from lending and similar models differently from price gains. Under the Federal Finance Ministry (BMF) letter on crypto assets of March 6, 2025, interest from lending and rewards from passive staking count as other income from services under Section 22 No. 3 of the German Income Tax Act (EStG). The tax office taxes it at your personal rate, at the moment of receipt and at its market value in euros.
An exemption limit of 256 euros a year applies to this income. If all your other service income stays below it, everything is tax-free. If you reach the limit, the entire amount becomes taxable, not just the part above it. The coins received are also deemed acquired: their value on receipt is your acquisition cost, and from that day the one-year holding period runs for them. The XRP originally held keep their one-year period; the BMF does not provide for an extension to ten years.
Swapping into FXRP and LP tokens as a possible disposal
Things get more complicated with pools and with Flare. If you put XRP into an AMM pool and receive LP tokens, or swap XRP into FXRP, tax offices may regard this as an exchange. An exchange within the holding period is a private disposal under Section 23 EStG, taxable on gains above the exemption limit of 1,000 euros a year. This case is not clearly regulated. Document every deposit with date and price, and have the classification checked by a tax adviser before moving larger amounts. Software that records such transactions automatically is compared in our overview of crypto tax tools.
Compare crypto lending ratesMiCA and lending: the EU licence does not cover lending
The EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) has applied since the end of 2024. It requires exchanges and custodians to be authorised, governs the segregation of client assets and sets disclosure duties. But MiCA explicitly excludes the lending of crypto assets: lending and borrowing products do not fall under its rules. An exchange's MiCA licence therefore says something about trading and custody, not about the safety of an earn product.
Checking the authorisation is still worthwhile. An exchange supervised in the EU must keep client balances separate and is answerable to an authority you can turn to. Which venues operate in Germany with authorisation is shown in our comparison of regulated crypto exchanges. With every earn product, also read the terms: who lends the coins on, whether there are lock-up periods and what happens to your balance in the event of insolvency.
XRP yield: without staking, a third party always pays
XRP staking is a catch-all term for products that have little in common with staking technically. The XRP Ledger does not reward holding, and a native model is not in sight despite the ideas at Ripple. Anyone who wants a yield chooses between the default risk of an exchange, the price risk of a pool and the insurance risk on Flare. Three steps help with the decision:
- Clarify the source of yield: For every product, check who pays the yield and whether the coins are lent on. Platforms with transparent terms are listed in our comparison of staking platforms.
- Compare providers and terms: Watch for lock-up periods, minimum amounts and the provider's authorisation. Interest models for XRP and other coins are set side by side in the crypto lending comparison.
- Prepare for tax: Record every receipt with date and euro value and keep an eye on the 256-euro exemption limit. The crypto tax tools in comparison help with this.
