Coinbase does not publish one fixed fee rate for all purchases. What a trade costs depends on payment method, order size and market conditions and is shown in the order preview before you confirm. The fixed items at a glance:

How to save: Coinbase Advanced has no spread and fees fall with trading volume, so frequent traders usually pay less there than with simple buys. Simple limit orders cost an extra 1%. Coinbase One only pays off with many purchases, because the subscription itself costs money. See how Coinbase compares on fees in our crypto exchange comparison.

Coinbase bonus and offers (October 2026)

Coinbase advertises staking rewards of up to 12% a year on selected crypto assets. The rate is based on estimated protocol rates and can change; Coinbase keeps the commission listed above from the rewards.

You can open a Coinbase account through our partner link to Coinbase; cryptoticker.io receives a commission when an account is opened. Offers as of 24 October 2026.

Exodus

The Exodus wallet is free to download and needs no account. You pay for it mainly when you swap one cryptocurrency for another inside the app, through a spread with no stated percentage. The quarterly report shows how important that line is: in the second quarter of 2026, 18.74 of 26.23 million US dollars in revenue came from swaps, or 71.5 percent, including 3.76 million through business partners. A year earlier it was 23.42 million US dollars and 90.7 percent. Swap revenue therefore also fell in absolute terms, with swap volume down 21.4 percent, while acquired payment services added new revenue.

ActionCost at Exodus
Download and use the walletfree, no account
Send cryptonetwork fee only, which according to Exodus goes entirely to the network
Swap in the appany spread in the quoted rate, plus the network fee to send the coins to the swap provider
Buy through partnersthe partner's fee, shown in the app before you buy
Sell through MoonPayMoonPay's fee, shown before you sell
Staking via EverstakeExodus receives a fee from Everstake, and the coins stay under your control

How to check the spread: enter the amount in the app, note how much you would receive and compare it with the market price. The gap is your cost. On a 1,000 euro swap, a 0.5% spread costs about 5 euros and 2% about 20 euros, plus the network fee. If you regularly move larger amounts, an exchange with a published fee schedule from our exchange comparison is often cheaper, and you withdraw the coins to your own wallet afterwards.

Tax: in many countries a swap counts as selling one asset and buying another, so it can be a taxable event. A tool from our crypto tax software comparison reads your addresses and keeps the records.

For the part of your holdings you plan to keep for longer, a device from our hardware wallet comparison is worth it; our guide to hot and cold wallets explains the difference. More wallets are compared in our software wallet comparison.

Verdict

In our overall rating Coinbase leads with 4.8 against 4.0 for Exodus.

For most investors Coinbase is therefore the better choice.

CoinbaseOur Opinion

In short: Coinbase is one of the best-known crypto exchanges in the world and is licensed under MiCA for customers in the EU. More than 400 crypto assets, a simple app, staking and a Nasdaq-listed parent company speak for the platform. The simple buy flow costs more than at many other exchanges, with a Coinbase fee of up to 1.875% plus spread; frequent traders therefore use Coinbase Advanced with maker and taker fees.

Is Coinbase safe and licensed in the EU?

Yes, Coinbase may serve customers across the EU. Crypto services are provided by Coinbase Luxembourg S.A., licensed under MiCA since 20 June 2025 and supervised by Luxembourg's financial regulator CSSF. Through the EU passport the licence covers 30 EEA countries, including Germany, France and Spain (ESMA register, file of 22 October 2026). Euro balances are held as e-money by Coinbase Ireland Limited, supervised by the Central Bank of Ireland. According to the Coinbase user agreement for the EEA, crypto assets and e-money are not covered by a deposit guarantee or an investor compensation scheme. The parent company Coinbase Global has been listed on Nasdaq since 2021 and publishes its results there regularly.

Fines from the Central Bank of Ireland: On 22 October 2026 the Central Bank of Ireland announced a fine of €3.25 million against Coinbase Ireland Limited. Between November 2020 and August 2025 the company did not adequately safeguard client funds, and the safeguarding account was under-funded for extended periods. The regulator does not allege any loss of client money; Coinbase admitted the breaches, and the sanction takes effect once confirmed by the Irish High Court. In November 2025 the same authority fined Coinbase Europe Limited €21.46 million over gaps in transaction monitoring. Details in our report on the Coinbase Ireland fine.

Data leak in 2025 and scam calls: In May 2025 Coinbase disclosed that bribed overseas support agents had copied customer data of less than 1% of monthly transacting users to enable scams in Coinbase's name. According to Coinbase, passwords, private keys and funds were not affected, and the company pledged to reimburse customers who were tricked into sending funds to the attackers (Coinbase statement). Coinbase never asks for your password or 2FA codes and never asks you to move crypto to a new address or another account: anyone pushing you to do so on the phone is a scammer.

Stablecoins under MiCA: For customers in the EEA, USDT, DAI, PYUSD and other stablecoins without MiCA authorisation can no longer be traded on Coinbase; remaining balances are converted into USDC on 30 October 2026. What you can do before then is explained in our report on the switch.

What you can do yourself: turn on two-factor authentication, never share codes on the phone and keep larger amounts on your own hardware wallet.

Who is Coinbase for?

Coinbase suits beginners who want a well-known platform with a simple app and a listed parent company, and investors who want buying, savings plans and staking in one place. Frequent traders save with Coinbase Advanced in the order book. For euro trading, Bitvavo and Kraken are cheaper. All licensed providers are listed in our comparison of regulated crypto exchanges.

ExodusOur Opinion

Exodus is the wallet for anyone who values a clear interface and wants to manage several coins in one place. Desktop and mobile, 50+ networks, swaps, purchases and staking in one app plus Trezor and Ledger support: for getting started with self-custody it is one of the most convenient options.

You should understand the business model. Exodus is listed and discloses how it earns money: in the second quarter of 2026, 18.74 of 26.23 million US dollars in revenue came from swaps, or 71.5 percent, including 3.76 million through business partners. The price sits in the rate as a spread with no stated percentage. If you only hold and send, you pay almost nothing; if you swap often, check the numbers first.

For long-term holdings, pair it with a hardware wallet, which Exodus supports directly. And as with any software wallet, responsibility lies with you: your backup is the only way back to your funds, meaning the twelve words and, in the mobile app, optionally a passkey.
