NEAR Protocol in November 2026: AI Infrastructure as a Growth Bet
NEAR trades at around $4.38 in November 2026, still far below earlier cycle highs. The project positions itself more clearly than almost any other layer 1 as infrastructure for AI agents: through chain abstraction, intents and account aggregation, users and autonomous agents are meant to operate across chains without managing bridges or seed phrases. Co-founder Illia Polosukhin, a former co-author of the Transformer paper, lends extra credibility to the AI narrative - a distinguishing feature that has yet to translate into sustained price strength.
Technically strong, economically still unproven
NEAR's strengths lie in its sharding architecture with high throughput, low fees, and one of the best developer experiences in the industry. The weakness: value accrual in the token lags behind the technical vision, and competition for the AI-agent narrative is fierce. The risk-reward profile is that of a growth stock - if the breakthrough as a settlement layer for AI agents succeeds, substantial upside exists; if it doesn't, NEAR competes as just one of many solid layer-1 chains.

What is NEAR Protocol (NEAR)? The NEAR coin explained
NEAR Protocol is a blockchain for applications that are meant to be as easy to use as ordinary apps, and NEAR is its cryptocurrency. The project was founded in 2018 by Illia Polosukhin and Alexander Skidanov; Polosukhin is a co-author of the 2017 research paper “Attention Is All You Need”, on which today’s AI language models are built. The main network has run since 2020 and is supported by the NEAR Foundation, based in Zug, Switzerland.
So that many users fit on the network at once, NEAR splits it into parallel sections called shards, using a design named Nightshade. Since an upgrade in May 2025, a new block has been produced roughly every 600 milliseconds, and transactions are final after about 1.2 seconds. Accounts carry readable names such as anna.near instead of long strings of characters, and through NEAR Intents and Chain Signatures a NEAR account can also swap and manage coins on other blockchains such as Bitcoin or Ethereum.
What is the NEAR coin used for?
NEAR pays fees and covers storage space on the blockchain. Anyone who delegates NEAR to a validator secures the network through staking and receives a share of the newly issued coins. The protocol burns most of the fees, so the busier the network, the more NEAR leaves circulation.
How many NEAR are there?
NEAR has no fixed cap. About 1.31 billion NEAR are in circulation, practically the entire supply (as of November 2026). New coins are created as staking rewards: since version 2.9.0 of the network software, active since the end of October 2025, issuance has been capped at 2.5 percent a year, down from 5 percent.
NEAR is listed on the major crypto exchanges, in the EU also on providers licensed under MiCA. Which ones they are and what they charge is shown in our crypto exchange comparison; how to store coins safely afterwards is explained in our guide how to store crypto.

What actually moves the NEAR price
NEAR differs from most layer-1 networks in its focus on usability: readable account names instead of cryptic addresses, sign-up without prior crypto knowledge, and fees that applications can cover on behalf of their users. That lowers the barrier to entry substantially - a point where most chains fall short.
Strategically, NEAR has oriented itself toward decentralized artificial intelligence. AI is one of the few themes reliably attracting capital in 2026 - and the field is fiercely contested at the same time.
The metrics we watch for NEAR
- Active accounts with recurring usage: easy sign-up generates many accounts - what matters is how many come back.
- Fee revenue: when applications cover the costs, direct demand for NEAR falls.
- Concrete AI applications with users: the difference between positioning and product.
- Inflation and staking ratio: NEAR continuously issues new tokens - staking locks up a portion of them.

Where this forecast could go wrong
If the AI positioning stays an announcement without applications that have real users, NEAR loses its differentiator versus Solana, Sui and Avalanche. Additionally, a cooldown in AI euphoria would hit the price regardless of NEAR's own progress.
