Serena Williams, the 23-time grand slam champion who always vocally advocated for social cause and women’s empowerment, has decided to enter into Venture Capital to further the cause. Although Serena Ventures was launched in 2014, it is only through a recent Instagram post that the star has announced the venture. It aims to “embrace diverse leadership, individual empowerment, creativity, and opportunity”. One of the notable investments the fund has made is into Coinbase, the San Francisco-based cryptocurrency exchange.

The tennis player invested in Coinbaseand other 30 companies through her investment business called Serena Ventures. The official site shows that she has a market capitalization of $12 billion in her portfolio. The investment into Coinbase comes at a time when the company is looking to expand internationally, mainly Japan and other markets such as in Latin America or Asia. The investments by Serena Ventures is surely gonna go a long way, more than helping out a company her investment has shown that traditional investors can place their funds in the crypto market.

“In 2014, (yes I know I can keep a secret) I launched Serena Ventures with the mission of giving opportunities to founders across an array of industries. Serena Ventures invests in companies that embrace diverse leadership, individual empowerment, creativity and opportunity”, Serene was quoted.

it has been a while since a big celebrity like Serena has openly admitted about their investment, although it was happening almost on a daily basis during the ICO heyday.

Further details about the investment made into Coinbase is not available at the time. Why the firm was chosen and how it matches the requirements of Serena Ventures is still unanswered. Alongside Coinbase, Serena Ventures has also backed Andela, the developer training and outsourcing company with operations in four African countries, Masterclass, the online learning platform, and Wave, a remittance service that’s available in five African countries.
