Hollywood releases trailer for ‘Crypto’, the movie

With Cryptocurrency expanding its influence to become the global symbol of a prophesied digital revolution, it was only a matter of time until Hollywood turned their eye to the burgeoning industry. Lionsgate Studios released a trailer for its latest tech thriller last week, titled ‘Crypto’ starring Kurt Russell, Luke Hemsworth, and Alexis Bledel.

Well, as if the wild ride the market has had in the past year didn’t have you on the edge of your seat, the silver screen will spruce it up with an action flick involving an anti-money laundering expert and the Russian mob.

The description of the YouTube trailer states: “In this cyber-thriller starring Kurt Russell and Beau Knapp, a Wall Street banker connects a small-town art gallery to a global conspiracy, putting his own family in grave danger.”

The plot appears to be on the thin side judging by the trailer. A small town in America plays host to a web of corruption, that true to every cheesy cliche, runs uncomfortably into some Russian bad guys, while a young tech investigator tries to get to the end of it. A Coinbase exchange type knockoff called Delta Coin will be featured in the movie. In the movie, Delta Coin lists the top cryptocurrencies at wild markups or actually realistic ones six months ago.

So far we can take an educated guess that Beau Knapp who plays the protagonist of the tale is trying to crack a Bitcoin money laundering ring, but what baffles us is Kurt Russell, who appears to play a farmer; How does his character fit in? So maybe there’s more to this movie, and we shouldn’t write it off just yet.

Crypto sadly seems to be equally clichéd with frames of ones and zeroes flashing across screens and desktop folders named ‘Bitcoin payouts’ and ‘kickbacks’. The the tagline “Fear is the ultimate currency” accompanies the trailer and the movie will see theatrical release on April 12, and will be available on demand.

Muddy Waters

Initial reactions to the trailer have been Lukewarm with websites like thenextweb resorting to sarcasm. But this reaction that the Crypto has received was not far from what was expected, the criticism that the movie has received so far borders on mockery, but reminds us of the much-lampooned 1995 movie The Net.

To take something positive from all this, Hollywood’s latest endeavor shows that crypto is significant enough to deserve its own movie. Everything said and done, we can’t wait to see what Kurt Russell as a farmer has to do with Russian Crypto Criminals.
