NEM is a smart contract supporting blockchain, implementing its own consensus mechanism known as Proof of Importance. The Singapore based foundation came in financial difficulties in 2019, which it was able to solve. A new blockchain named Symbol was released in September 2020. The new Xym token will replace the old one known as XEM.
