Ethereum’s upcoming Pectra upgrade is set to bring major enhancements to the network, improving scalability, lowering transaction fees, and introducing new smart account functionality. The upgrade combines two separate upgrades—the Prague upgrade (focusing on the execution layer) and the Electra upgrade (impacting the consensus layer). Together, they form the Pectra upgrade, marking another significant milestone in Ethereum’s development roadmap.

Pectra Upgrade: The Next Step After Dencun

Pectra follows the Dencun upgrade, which was implemented in March 2024. Dencun was a hard fork designed to reduce transaction fees for layer-2 solutions and improve Ethereum’s overall scalability. Building on this foundation, Pectra introduces additional improvements aimed at enhancing the efficiency and flexibility of Ethereum’s blockchain.

Ethereum developer Terence Tsao confirmed that the Pectra upgrade successfully launched on the Sepolia test network on March 5, 2025. This marks a crucial step in its testing phase, following a minor setback on the Holesky test network due to validator misconfigurations. These test networks are vital for ensuring smooth deployment before implementation on the mainnet.

Ethereum Pectra’s Two-Stage Rollout

The Pectra upgrade will be implemented in two phases:

Phase 1: Mid-March 2025

  • Doubling Layer-2 Blob Capacity: Increases capacity from three to six blobs per block, reducing congestion and lowering fees.
  • Account Abstraction: Enables gas fees to be paid using stablecoins like USDC and DAI, offering more payment flexibility.
  • Increased Validator Staking Limits: Raises the staking cap from 32 ETH to 2,048 ETH, allowing large-scale staking operations.

Phase 2: Late 2025 or Early 2026

  • Verkle Trees Implementation: Replacing Merkle-Patricia tries with a more efficient data structure, improving data storage and synchronization.
  • Peer Data Availability Sampling (PeerDAS): Enhances scalability by allowing nodes to verify transaction data without storing all of it.

The Pectra upgrade includes 11 critical Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) aimed at optimizing the network:

  • EIP-7251: Increases validator staking limits from 32 ETH to 2,048 ETH, allowing more flexibility for stakers.
  • EIP-7691: Doubles blob data capacity per block, reducing congestion for layer-2 solutions.
  • EIP-7623: Adjusts call data costs to encourage the use of blobs, improving efficiency.
  • EIP-7702: Introduces smart accounts, allowing standard wallets to function as smart contracts.
  • EIP-6110: Speeds up validator activation by processing staking deposits on the execution layer.
  • EIP-7002: Simplifies validator withdrawals with direct transactions instead of complex Beacon Chain processes.
  • EIP-7685: Enhances execution-consensus communication, making validator operations more efficient.
  • EIP-2537: Lowers transaction costs by enabling faster cryptographic operations.
  • EIP-2935: Extends block history retention from 51 minutes to 27 hours for improved smart contract reliability.
  • EIP-7549: Optimizes validator voting, making consensus mechanisms more efficient.
  • EIP-7840: Introduces flexible blob configurations, ensuring future scalability improvements.

What’s Next? Verkle Trees and Beyond

Ethereum’s long-term roadmap includes the introduction of Verkle trees, a key feature in the Verge phase of Ethereum’s post-Merge development plan. Verkle trees will significantly improve data storage efficiency, reduce hardware requirements, and enable nearly instant node synchronization. This will further enhance Ethereum’s usability and decentralization.
