West Virginia To Introduce Blockchain Powered Voting Option

West Virginia to introduce secure blockchain powered voting options for military service members who can’t vote in person. It will become the first such state to test mobile voting by blockchain in a federal election, reported CNN.

With this move, deployed and enlisted, troops living abroad will have the capacity to vote in the month of November. All that is expected to cast their vote is a perfect Apple or Android cell phone and affirmed, approved State or Federal ID. The objective of this venture is to offer and deal with a secure mobile voting solution that is irrefutable, straightforward, and more secure and open than currently available voting system.

West Virginia Secretary of State Mac Warner and Voatz, the Boston company that developed the voting app, said that it is secure. People using this app first will have to register by taking a photo of their government-issued identification and a selfie-style video of their face, then upload them via the app. Voatz says its facial recognition software will make sure that the photo and video show the same person. Once authenticated, voters will be able to cast their ballot using the Voatz app.

Secretary of State Mac Warner said that,

There is nobody that deserves the right to vote any more than the guys that are out there, and the women that are out there, putting their lives on the line for us.

However, computer security experts have called it as a horrific idea. Joseph Lorenzo Hall, the chief technologist at the Center for Democracy and Technology, told CNN in an email,

Mobile voting is a horrific idea. It’s internet voting on people’s horribly secured devices, over our horrible networks, to servers that are very difficult to secure without a physical paper record of the vote.
